Got the first day blues, girl? Don’t worry, we know what it’s like to be new at school, at a job, at camp, or pretty much anywhere. On one hand, it’s kind of exciting (new friends! new places to hang out! new crazy local food–yum!); but on the other, it can honestly be a little scary.
No, we’re not saying it’s like Friday the 13th scary, but it can be a little hard to figure out how to act and what to say without being completely awkward all the time.
That’s why we’ve gotten the amazing Meg Haston to help out. Not only has Meg lived in over 15 cities herself (that’s a lot of practice at being new at school and in town!), but she’s also the author of How to Rock Braces and Glasses, which is now the awesome new Nickelodeon show, How to Rock. Add on to that the awesome fact that our homegirl Meg is a licensed counselor, and BAM, we knew she was the perfect person to help you out.
So get ready to not just be new at school, but to be the new girl at school (or work, or wherever!) that everybody wants to get to know. Her tips are amazing.
Check back every Monday for more of her How To Deal wisdom. You might be new at school, but she’s new here at Gurl, and we want to give her a super big welcome. Tell her hi in the comments!

Moving is the story of my life! i just moved last August, from Mexico to Seattle. Imagine how different it is! I was sercad, too. I had your exact same worries! High School is always viewed as the most important and fun years of your life, and I was so sercad I’d be the lonely, friendless girl who sat alone in the cafeteria. It took me a few months to gather a nice circle of friends, but it all turned out ok. Tips:On your first day of school, don’t be the quiet one who fades into the background. Try standing out, and people will be curious. Ask the nicest person you’ve met if you can sit with them during lunch (that was the scariest part for me). And though ALL adults say this be yourself! by being yourself you will attract people like you, and you’ll find friends in no time. I was sercad there’d be no people like me, so I didn’t really let my personality show for the first few weeks. I was nice and polite to everyone I didn’t want to start off with grudges and enemies. Then I just stuck with the ones who were like me Also, join a club or a sport. It may be intimidating (it was for me!), but you’ll meet people with the same interests, and if you mention you’re new, they’ll most likely be kind. I used to live in DC, and I have a lot of Virginian friends. People from Virginia are really nice, so don’t worry! And good luck!!!
