When you’re in a long-term relationship, sometimes things can get a little rocky. It’s hard to actually break up with someone when you’ve been together for so long and often that’s when breaks come into play. Breaks are really complicated and filled with gray-area. And the way breaks work depends entirely on the couple. You may get back together, you may not. You might establish rules during your break. You may or may not talk regularly. It’s very confusing, but Caitlin is here to help you navigate taking a break!

Have you ever gone on a break before? Did you ask for it? What happened? Did you get back together? Tell us in the comments!

Is it weird if you’ve never been in a relationship before?

I have a huge crush on this guy at my school, but I’ve never really met him. My friend got me to message him on Facebook, and we talked for a few hours, but I’m super afraid to talk to him in person! How do I do it, and what should I say without being super awkward?!?! Help!

I dated my high school sweetheart all through college. About 5 years into our relationship neither one of us were happy, but we had been together so long we were more than just a couple, we were each other’s best friend. We took a break to see if maybe we just needed space. We still talked on the phone and went out to dinner occasionally, but it was a really difficult thing because we were in between being together and being completely broken up. Eventually, we got back together, we bother did some changing and growing up and now we’ve been happily married for two years. A break doesn’t necessarily mean the end of a relationship, but it’s enough space to realize if you’re willing to change or if you deserve better.
