The Condom Challenge is when you snort a condom through your nose and then pull it out of your mouth.

Sounds like fun, right? I mean, here I was thinking that condoms were just for safe sex but no! This is a great use for them. I can’t imagine why this is just now becoming a thing.

Take a look! (Warning: This is actually super gross and might make you have the urge to vomit. Don’t watch if you’re queasy!)

There’s a guy claiming he started it (which he shouldn’t be proud of), but there are other videos of this that are way older so no one really knows where this came from. Or why for that matter.

Y’all, this is a BAD idea. Just because your nasal cavity is connected to your mouth does not mean that you should see what you can pull through it. Not only is this disgusting, but it’s really dangerous! If you get something stuck in there, serious things can happen like bleeding, infection or choking. Not to mention how embarrassing it will be to show up to the doctor with a condom in your sinuses.

So please, leave the condoms out of your nose!

Oh man, guys. Some of the latest crazy YouTube trends are getting doctors and parents all worked up, and not to sound like an old person, but I can’t say I really blame them.

Doctors in Chicago are warning parents to make sure their kids stop sniffing around the kitchen looking for food to do dangerous stuff with. And by dangerous stuff, I mean mainly attempting the cinnamon challenge, the marshmallow challenge or snorting nutmeg. Um, what? That was kind of a weird sentence to write. But seriously, there are a bunch of kids and teens out there who are actually getting really hurt trying to do these crazy stunts.

If you’re not big on weird Internet trends, I’ll fill you in. I was introduced to the cinnamon challenge last year, when my little sister and her friends gleefully told me how they spent the afternoon eating mouthfuls of cinnamon and then throwing up. When I stared at them in shocked horror, they told me they put a video on YouTube, no big deal. What is the cinnamon challenge? It’s when you try to eat one full tablespoon of cinnamon without drinking water for 60 seconds.

That might sound relatively harmless, and that’s probably why there are hundreds of videos on YouTube of teens just like my sister attempting to do it themselves. But it’s actually pretty dangerous. As Dr. Christina Hantsch points out, “The dry, loose cinnamon triggers a violent coughing effect and also a burning sensation that actually can lead to breathing and choking hazards.” I have no idea why this became popular, but for some reason, it is.

The marshmallow challenge is pretty weird too. I guess it’s when someone tries to fit as many marshmallows in their mouths as possible. While it does make for some oddly funny videos of puffed up cheeks, it’s not exactly something we should all be doing. Dr. Hantsch notes that two children have already died attempting to stuff marshmallows in their mouth. That’s pretty scary.

While I’ve never heard of the nutmeg snorting craze, apparently it’s a thing. Snorting large amounts of nutmeg creates a hallucinogenic reaction, sort of like a homemade high. Do I even have to say how silly this would be to do?

I know that there are tons of weird trends out there that doctors say teens do when really a lot of teens have never even heard of them (like butt chugging). And obviously I know not all of you do these things. But I’ve personally witnessed the cinnamon and marshmallow challenges being attempted by several people I know. And guys, just don’t do them. I know you want to make a really funny video to share with people, and I know you want to try to get in on what looks like harmless fun. But it’s not so harmless when you can get seriously hurt doing it.

CoverGirl has a lot of spokeswomen lately–Pink, Taylor Swift, Sofia Vergara, Janelle Monae, Ellen Degeneres–but their newest one is our favorite. Talia Joy Castellanois beautiful inside and out, and she’s helping other girls feel that way, too, through her super-inspiring and cosmetically educational YouTube videos.

Talia is 13 and was first diagnosed with cancer six years ago. At that time, she bonded with a pal of her mom’s who also survived the disease, and they started talking makeup–and Talia never looked back. She used makeup as her “wig,” sporting sparkly shadows and lip glosses to feel beautiful despite losing her hair to a lot of her chemotherapy. She spread her joy around by making YouTube tutorials on how to get her spritely looks, and she garnered around 14 million hits–this was before she even made it on TV.

“When I put on my makeup I feel like I can embrace those features that I really like about myself,” she explained. “I feel if someone’s looking at me, they’re looking at my makeup, not looking at my bald head. I am just trying to make young girls, young adults, adults, anyone, feel beautiful by using makeup.”

Ellen Degeneres heard of Talia, who is now battling both neuroblastoma and leukemia at the same time, through her fans on Facebook and Twitter, and, much like the rest of the world, fell in love with her. She invited Talia to be on her show, where it was announced that Talia was now an honorary CoverGirl. Of course, Talia’s response was freakin’ (or, as she’d put it, “frickin’“) adorable. It’s ballsy for anyone to show off a makeup-free face in an era where false perfection pervades just about everything we do, but it was extra brave of Cassandra Bankson. She suffered for a long time from a severe bout with cystic acne, and it got so bad that her classmates threw pizza at her (as in “pizzaface”–how lame and uncreative, let alone douchey) and called her “The Virus.” WTF is wrong with people? Eventually it got so bad that she actually became home schooled to avoid her bullies. “I used to sit back and let acne ruin my life, but it got to the point where I needed to do something to get myself out of the rut.” That’s where her vid comes in.

In her YouTube clip that shot her to stardom, Cassandra shows her step-by-step guide to having skin that looks pretty freakin’ flawless, despite the fact that her complexion was so problematic underneath. And she’s having the time of her life now, too. She’s got an encouraging boyfriend (get it, girl!), over 40 million YouTube views and she’s modeling at 2012 Fashion Week!

“It feels like a dream to be here during Fashion Week,” she told The New York Post. “I am a different person from who I used to be because I’ve got so much more confidence now.” Indeed–she’s also making bank, snagging modeling gigs for Bebe and Range Rover and an endorsement deal for Hourglass Cosmetics (she mentioned their primer being her fave in the famous video).

If you’ve ever clicked on a “related video” link or been frustrated by your YouTube search results, chances are you’ve seen or heard of the now infamous Reply Girls on YouTube.

For those of you who haven’t: YouTube Reply Girls post video responses to popular (and often viral) videos and use the same search tags as the original clips. As a result, they show up in the “related videos” or “recommended videos” sections at the end of the video, in the same search results, and on the side bar of whichever video you’re likely actually trying to watch.

A lot of YouTube users, as well as administrators, aren’t happy with these videos because they’re taking away hits that actual related videos may get. For example, if you want to watch a video of, say, dogs on swings (or our own adorbs Lena Chen’s advice), and you realize how awesome it is and want to see more clips like it, the first place you’re likely to look is the “related videos” section. But because of Reply Girls and the amount of hits that they get, you’re less likely to find a corgi playing in the park and more likely to find a brunette with a low-cut top talking about dogs on swings. And that’s kinda pointless, isn’t it?

YouTube’s algorithms–the system they use to determine which videos show up in the “related videos” section–go by the number of views the videos get. The videos with the most hits show up at the top, which pushes some clips that may be more relevant further down the list, decreasing their amount of views. It’s sort of a vicious video cycle, and YouTube is trying to stop it.

YouTube’s admins recently posted an announcement that they’re using a new algorithm to determine what videos are related or recommended, and this will likely be detrimental to the traffic for YouTube Reply Girls. They’re going to start factoring in the time spent watching particular videos–that way if you click on a Reply Girl video by accident and close it out quickly, it won’t bump them up to the top of the recommended and related videos section. Fair enough, right?

That depends on how you look at it. This is making the YouTube Reply Girls upset, because a lot of them make money off of their videos: they have so many views that advertisers pay for space on their pages and to precede their clips. They’re saying it’s unfair for them to lose their profits, while other YouTube users think it’s unfair for the Reply Girls to make them lose their own profits by bumping other videos down.

While we agree that it’s frustrating to have YouTube essentially spammed by Reply Girl videos, we also think there’s an element of sexism at play that’s making these girls villains when they’re not the only guilty parties here. The amount of hate and flaming these girls have acquired is little short of astonishing, and the hatred people spew at them is pretty horrific to read: the original Reply Girl (her account is actually called TheReplyGirl), Alejandra Gaitan, is often called stupid and told to learn English (uh, she sounds okay to us–and how dumb can she be if she’s bilingual and making money off of YouTube haters?). She also gets told to commit suicide pretty often, and that’s not cool. You can learn more about her in this interview:

Part of why Reply Girls on YouTube garner so much hate is because they often show cleavage–especially in their thumbnails–and that drives a lot of traffic to their often irrelevant and pointless videos. While no one is forcing them to cut off their foreheads in order to better showcase their chests, no one is forcing pervs to click on their videos, either. A lot of guys make reply videos too, but they have fewer incentives for the typically straight male Internet trolls and mouthbreathers to click on their links. These women are sharp enough to exploit the very people who claim to detest them.

Do we think Reply Girls on YouTube are a little annoying when we’re searching for puppies or giggling babies or how to make our own bath salts? Of course. But do they deserve to be flamed as much as they are? We think not. While we wish they’d garner attention for making more substantial videos that place more value on their brains than on their breasts, at the same time, they’re profiting off of people who are too dumb to realize that there are plenty of other places on the Internet to stare at boobs. That said, the new YouTube playing field is still pretty fair, because now if you hate a video and stop watching it right away, you won’t be as likely to stumble upon it again.

That said, there’s a ton more to the powerful duo than their twin-status. Their songs, TV appearances (HELLO Oprah!), and big screen cameos (like in the Justin Bieber documentary) speak for themselves. So when we got a chance to chat with them, we wanted to know about them as real girls. What they love, what they laugh at, and what they can’t stop eating!

What’s your worst date story?
Megan: I went on a date that was to the movies and it was just awkward. He was just an awkward person and it translated to me and the whole time, I was just so uncomfortable and I just could not wait to get out of there.

Liz: Oooo Date for me! I think it was, we were just like driving around and having really good conversation and then like all of a sudden, his car started making a noise and then it was just like, he did not care about me anymore. It was like Ohmygosh, my car is gonna break down. What if my car breaks down? This is like my pride and joy. This is my car. And I was like, Alright, OK, I’ll just chill here. So that was probably the worst date I’ve had

If you could only have one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Megan: Mashed potatoes

There’s a new trend on YouTube: Videos asking, “Am I ugly?” To which we say: NO! But are you nuts?

The danger of posting YouTube videos asking “Am I pretty?” or “Am I ugly?” in an open forum is just that: it’s an open forum. You’re exposing yourself to anonymous criticism from strangers who are shielded by computers and keyboards. They face no repercussions for cruel comments against girls they’ve never met. They know nothing about you other than the fact that you’re clearly insecure, and therefore an easy target for flaming, hurtful commentary and flat out bullying.

It’s normal to want validation. You’re human! But these girls and guys are looking for it in all the wrong places. Think of it this way: Don’t you value what your family, friends, and people who love you think? Because they think you’re rad. Strangers who don’t know you may not agree, but who cares? They don’t know you. So how can they make an accurate judgment? Do you really want to determine your self worth based on what people who sit home and comment on “Am I ugly?” videos think?

This girl’s YouTube username is “BeautifulAndProud.” We think she’s beautiful (we dig her eyeliner skills too!), but we don’t think she’s proud, because the entire subject of her video is “Am I ugly?” Ladies, we can do better than this!

This gal showed a bunch of pictures, then asked, “Am I ugly?” Is she blind? She’s gorgeous (we actually think she looks a bit like Dakota Fanning)!

Even guys are getting in on it. This dude cut his own hair, then asked the Internet community, “Am I ugly?” He also invited strangers to call him a “fag.” C’mon, man. That’s not only insecure, it’s insensitive.

Listen: If you’re reading this, you’re beautiful. Yes, you. We all have our moments of insecurity, some longer than others, but everyone has something beautiful about them. Whether it’s your glowing skin, your shiny hair, your sparkling eyes, your dimples… Find what that is, know it, own it, and embrace it.

More importantly, know that your worth extends beyond the exterior. You have a heart and you have a mind. Are you awesome at math? Are you the best server on your volleyball team? A good painter? An awesome listener? Do you sound like Demi Lovato when you sing in the shower? Those are more attractive than any photo you post to Facebook or any video you post on YouTube. So if you’re ever tempted to post a video online asking, “Am I pretty?” know that the answer is yes. Now we can all go back to watching pandas sneeze.
