Snacking on Pretzel M&Ms all day and sitting around watching TV in the air-conditioning wasn’t exactly making me feel like Wonder Woman.

Day one on the treadmill was rough. Day two was better. By day three, I’d woken up before my alarm, excited to put my sneakers on and head out the door. Good stuff, right?! Well, things went all kinds of sideways on day eight or nine when I decided to weigh myself after a workout. I’d gained three pounds. Gained?! How was this possible? I could tell I was getting in better shape because my dresses were already fitting better. The scale had to be broken, right?!

Wrong. The thing I’d forgotten, and that I always forget, is that muscle weighs more than fat. So if you’re a pretty healthy weight, and you start working out more, when some of your fat mass is replaced by muscle, you might weigh more.

When I remembered that, I decided that I really just shouldn’t weigh myself anymore. I only very rarely eat junk food, my clothes aren’t too tight, and I’m working out. That number on the scale is just a number. For girls who are seriously overweight and who are trying to lose some pounds so they can be healthier, I understand how numbers can help with goal setting and tracking progress–but we still shouldn’t obsess about them.

There are so many other way more exciting benefits of being active (like, um, having fun!) that shifting that number on the scale kind of has to take the back burner.

Who’s with me, girls? Who runs, works out, or plays a sport mainly just because it makes them feel good? Tell me all about it in the Body Exchange wants women to focus on fitness, not weight loss. So why are thin girls banned? | Source: Shutterstock

The media reports a lot on discrimination against overweight people, but it turns out that thin folk are a target as well. At a new gym in Canada, Body Exchange, thin women are actually not allowed to join. Sounds a little unfair, right?

Sort of, but it really depends on how you look at it. Body Exchange caters specifically to overweight women, describing itself as a “safe haven” for those without svelte, model-type figures. Body Exchange founder, Louise Green, says that thin women hurt morale of the overweight gym patrons and made them less likely to actually hit the gym and work out. She founded her new gym, Body Exchange, for overweight women to work out and feel motivated among their similarly sized peers.

“Many of our clients have not had successful fitness pasts so I can see the anxiety before we get started and I can see the relief and happiness after we finish,” Green told The Province. “People are often too fearful to become active,” she added. “There wasn’t a model that offered camaraderie. I used to walk into fitness classes where nobody would even say ‘Hi.’ This has got to be fun or it’s not going to work.”

While that doesn’t sound like it goes against anyone of a below-average size, Green explained that everyone who joins Body Exchange is screened over the phone–and if you’re too thin, you’re not in. Green insists, “The presence of that person in our program will bring down morale.”

We can see why someone out of shape or overweight may feel a little insecure in a spin class next to a triathlete or Victoria’s Secret model, but is it really fair to ban someone for being lean if you wouldn’t ban someone for being obese?

Of course, the article may have taken some quotes out of context and omitted a few, as many often do. But the piece presents Green’s statement that no one said “hi” to her in her fitness class alongside the point that she doesn’t allow thin women in Body Exchange, which sorta makes it sound like the thin women she encountered were vain, rude, and uncaring, doesn’t it? And that’s not necessarily cool. (And really, why couldn’t she say “hi” first? Maybe these people are just shy.) Additionally, Green herself says that the mission of Body Exchange was to get women to be active and healthy–and that weight loss was just a pleasant bonus. It’s a little hypocritical, then, to dismiss thin women from the workout club just for being thin. Not all thin people are in shape or active!

Obviously, we love anything that gets girls moving, healthy, and appreciative of their bodies–and we adore that Body Exchange and its owners are committed to getting women to embrace themselves as they are. But that also entails accepting and embracing others as they are, too. It also comes down to a level of personal responsibility, self-worth, and stereotyping: Remember those body judgments we all make? Situations like these may not help them go away, because they stress the differences and divisions that we create for ourselves as women. If seeing a thin woman in the gym lowers someone’s motivation to work out, they likely weren’t that determined in the first place. If you need to prejudge others to try escaping judgment yourself, there’s something not right there.

Do you think Body Exchange is being unfair by banning thin women? Or do you think Body Exchange is creating a more supportive environment for overweight women? Would you join a gym like Body Exchange? Tell us in the No need for glitter eyeshadow, but I do want to look presentable!

When you walk into my gym, the first thing you see, emblazoned on the wall in huge block letters, are the words: “NO JUDGEMENTS.” Immediately under this statement is what is quite possibly the largest wall of mirrors in New York City—or, actually, maybe in the world!

This is obviously a pretty cruel combination, but if I’m supposed to stare at my (sweaty, suffering-through-it, spandex-covered) body without judgements, you can be darn sure I’ll at least be wearing mascara. Smudge-proof, sweat-proof mascara, that is!

I'd like to think I'm a little more subtle than Kim!

Here’s the thing: I don’t look my best when I’m working out. Some girls have swinging ponytails, dewy skin, and bright cheeks when they run—but then there’s me: sweaty, blotchy, with hair that inexplicably frizzes before the elliptical machine has managed to complete its first ellipse.

I would never, ever leave my apartment looking like that—and we’re not talking “natural” here, we’re talking haggard—so it doesn’t really make sense that I would feel comfortable looking that way at the gym, which is, after all, a public place!

Amanda looks awesome as always--with or without makeup!

And this is where make-up comes in: if I can stare into that wall of mirrors and concentrate on my face (still sweaty, to be sure, but even-toned and bright) I’ll have the confidence to let go of vanity and complete my workout. We’re not talking Kim-Kardashian-level face paint here (though if I had paparazzi waiting outside my gym, I’d definitely spend an hour or four perfecting my post-workout look), but just the basics: concealer, mascara, and maybe some blush. I don’t necessarily want to look like I’m wearing make-up at the gym, but I do want to look…human.

It’s not about attracting boys, and it’s not about competing with the dewy-faced girls. It’s about looking okay enough to not care about how I look. So, yes, I definitely wear make-up to the gym. No judgements.

What do you think about wearing makeup to the gym?
