Anyway, according to Twitter, new music from both JT and Destiny’s Child is the best thing to happen to music in basically forever. And while I have a personal vendetta against JT (I met him and he was so rude. Let’s not talk about it), I have to admit I dig his music. I also have very fond memories of a teenage Jessica singing along to Destiny’s Child with friends, so I’m pretty excited. See My Friends In Person

A few days before her Twitter leave of absence, Demi tweeted some sage advice about the importance of friendship. I’ve forgotten what some of my friends look like beyond their Facebook profile picture. For all I know, they only exist in the digital world. I'd give them a call or meet up with them... you know, just to confirm they are still actual, real people.

Take Advantage Of Extra Drying Time

I would do my nails every single night. It’s hard to paint my nails and scroll through my news feed at the same time. Now, no need to worry about the time it takes to let my nails dry and getting polish all over the keyboard! Plus, without all the key tapping, that should cut down on chips.

If I stopped going on my social media accounts, I think I would start blinking again. I’m kind of convinced that all of the staring I do at computer screens has given me a big time case of "Overly Attached Girlfriend" meme level-crazy eyes. It’ll be nice to close them again.

Go On Real Dates

Right now, my most frequent dates are me snuggling up on the couch with my laptop to watch a movie while we scroll through Facebook or read new Tweets. If I canceled my accounts, I would be able to go on dates with a real guy, and not just my laptop. I know there will be a little separation anxiety at first, but I think it is what is best for the both of us.

I happen to own the entire collected works of Shakespeare. Currently, the book makes an awesome doorstop, but if I hopped off my social media, instead of reading thousands of status updates, I could read the Bard’s entire works. People are always making up new social media slang (hashtag, anyone?) but Shakespeare was making up words before it was even cool.

Express Long Thoughts

No Twitter means no more calculating my thoughts into 140 characters or less. I have so much more room to express myself now! I could maybe write a very long one-woman show or pen a whole memoir. I’d never thought about writing beyond the character limits before!

Swap Real-Life Drama For TV Drama

Instead of dealing with Facebook drama, I could watch so much more drama on television. I could have finally catch up on Revenge so I could actually talk to my roommate about it, rather than lying and just repeating back what I read other critics say about it (shhh, don't tell!).

Sooo, I kind of forgot my mom doesn't use social media. I'd finally make the time to have real conversations with her since I guess I shouldn't have assumed she'd been reading all my statuses for the past three months. My Facebook photo collection is pretty huge, but that's also because I snap pics super quick. I don't spend a lot of time thinking about picture quality, just the fact that people know ASAP what my dinner looks like. If I wasn't only taking pics for social media, I could take a photography class, and maybe make some money off my shots.

When was the last time I played tag? No, not tag someone in a status or a photo. Like the original definition of tag. Considering I’ve spent so much time sitting on my couch looking at my social media, running around to play an exciting game of tag with my friends would give me a much needed exercise boost.

A 4Chan Twitter hoax called #cutting4Bieber encouraged pics of girls cutting after Justin Bieber was caught smoking weed. | Source: WENN

Girls cutting is never funny, nor is cool, healthy or trendy. Girls cutting for Justin Bieber? Even worse. But that became a trending topic on Twitter this week after he was caught smoking weed . . . but it wasn’t real.

Troll group 4Chan devised a somewhat elaborate Twitter hoax, compiling disturbing images of girls cutting their wrists and posting with the hashtag “#cutting4Bieber.” WTF?! People mistook the hoax as a legit group of Beliebers taking to their inner arms to send Justin Bieber a message–even Miley Cyrus spoke out on the dangers of girls cutting and how this isn’t a matter to be taken lightly.

I’m not saying any topic is off limits jokewise–that’s dumb, and humor is subjective. But actively encouraging anyone else to self-harm, especially a group that can be as impressionable and group-minded as Beliebers can, is both irresponsible, sick, and sort of just . . . evil.

The 4Chan hoax began on the troll group’s message boards, where some sick puppy wrote, ”Tweet a bunch of pics of people cutting themselves and claim we did it because Bieber was smoking weed. See if we can get some little girls to cut themselves.”

See the difference there? They’re actively doing something with the intent for to get girls cutting themselves. That’s their entire purpose for this. It’s much different from making a joke about something, you dig?

A lot of 4Chan users hopped onto the perverse bandwagon, comparing it to their “#bald4Bieber” campaign back in October 2012–that was another Twitter hoax that they hoped would encourage girls to shave their heads in solidarity with Justin Bieber, who they said had cancer (none of that was true, obviously). There’s a big difference between girls shaving their heads–which, if done under false pretenses, is pretty traumatizing in itself but not immediately dangerous–and girls cutting, which could be potentially deadly.

The threads were all taken down shortly after they were posted because–hello?! It’s insane, it’s sadistic, and it’s dangerous. But some damage may have been done: Pictures on Twitter, tumblr, and Facebook showed girls cutting. It’s not clear if those pictures were of legit Beliebers who bought into the #cutting4Bieber campaign or if they were images used by 4Chan in the hoax, but whatever the case: It’s not cool at all. Cutting is serious, and seriously urging anyone else to do so suggests that you have really serious issues, possibly worse ones than actual cutters do (and those are bad).

If you cut yourself, or if you know any girls cutting themselves for any reason, you can get help here. And if you know any girls cutting for Justin Bieber to stop smoking weed or trying to get anyone else to do so, be sure that they get a lot of help.

The amount of time that I spent on Facebook in my dorm room instead of studying probably could have gotten me an honorary degree in college. I’m kidding – I did study a lot, but it’s true that social media was a big part of my college experience.

So while all I got in college because of Facebook was less sleep than I should have, some students at Newberry College in South Carolina will actually going to get course credit for getting their social media skills on.

Newberry is introducing a social media major and minor for the Fall 2013 semester. According to the school, the social media curriculum is going to be made up of a bunch of classes from all different departments (ranging from business to psychology), plus a few newbie classes just for this program. Seems pretty sweet, right?

I was a journalism major, and I really, really wish I wish I had more experience with social media in college. I don’t know if I would have necessarily switched my major to one entirely focused on it, but social media skills are a big plus – not just in journalism, but a lot of different fields. Think about it – probably nearly all the companies or businesses you can think of have a Facebook page these days.

In my experience, using social media in your job requires different approach than you would use with your personal profile. I definitely feel that learning those strategies has a place in the classroom, and it’s cool (and useful) that it seems like students will get to think about social media from a bunch of angles with such a variety of classes.

According to the Huffington Post piece where I first read the news, some people have expressed that they’re a little dubious about if this new major is a good idea. Is it something that will be useful for graduates or is it just trying to be hip and trendy for the young, techie crowd?

I don’t think I have to tell you guys how fast technology changes (guys, I remember a time before email, let alone Facebook), but to me, it seems the school has really considered the demands that will be on them to stay up to date in order to make this degree and experience a worthwhile one for students. When a local news station interviewed Newberry associate professor Tania Sosiak (who designed the major), she said: “Each semester the technology is new, so the textbook is obsolete, so I’m challenged, as well as all the other professors.”

We’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out, but let the record show that as it stands now, I “like” this bit of news (click!).

The “real” followers are real people who use Twitter. The fake ones were bought by PR companies. People who sell these fake accounts to celebs can make as much as $800 a day!

Here are some of the accounts they decided to crack down on.

31% of @justinbieber followers are fake
32% of @katyperry followers are fake
32% of @espn followers are fake
33% of @britneyspears followers are fake

What does all of this add up to in real numbers? (SSU did the math for us!) Out of Lady Gaga’s 28,839,110 only 8,074,950 are good. Meaning they’re actual people on Twitter. Out of Justin Bieber’s 27,176,769 followers only 7,881,263 are good. Out of Katy Perry’s 25,678,355 followers only 6,676,372 are good. That’s a huge difference from how these celebs present themselves.

Why does this matter? It gives them an unfair advantage. When celebrities fake fans, they’re faking it to attract more fans, which makes it harder for other talented people with maybe 10,000 followers to reach a broader audience. (What struggling artist can afford to BUY FANS?) If you’re looking for music, you’re not going to listen to every single song that was ever made–that’s absurd. What you might do is look at who is already popular, look at Top 40 or what’s hot on iTunes. The people on the top of those lists are the most visible, which makes us more likely to see their work, embrace it, and keep them on top longer. You’ll probably hear the Billboard’s #1 single before the Billboard’s 1000th, right? Think of it this way, no one uses Myspace or Friendster anymore simply because they’re not popular.

On the flip side, 7 million or 8 million or 100,000 followers is a BIG DEAL. It’s a little weird that these particularly huge stars deem it necessary to cheat. Even if you so much as think something negative about Justin Bieber one billion of his fans are ready with ammo to tell you he is actually awesome. There is no doubt that these stars are adored by many people, so why fake it?

The attackers pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual abuse and misdemeanor voyeurism in order to receive a plea deal. The maximum punishment is 180 days in prison and a $500 fine.

Savannah doesn’t believe the proposed punishment is harsh enough. Though the exact punishment cannot be revealed due to court order, personally even if they got the maximum it doesn’t feel like quite enough to me. Six months for sexual abuse and circulating images of it? Please.

Of course Savannah was pretty pissed about this too. Frustrated and feeling like the law didn’t serve her justice, she Tweeted the names of her attackers. Normally the names of those convicted of sexual crimes are public information, but because her attackers were minors their names had to be kept private. She might now be facing charges herself for going against the judge’s wishes.

She told the Huffington Post, “I’m at the point that if I have to go to jail for my rights, I will do it.” Wow. That’s a hugely brave statement and a very clear message to send to sexual abusers. I applaud Savannah for understanding the legality of this, still holding her ground, and dealing with the possible consequences. Savannah isn’t a victim, she’s a justice seeker.

I completely empathize with Savannah. I don’t know that I would have done things differently. But this isn’t personal for me or you the way it for Savannah, so we, as outsiders, have the benefit of looking at this picture from all sides. And although I don’t think what she did is wrong, I don’t believe that it was absolutely right, either.

We don’t know how old these boys were, but we know that they were younger than 18. They could have been 14 or 16 years old when they committed the act. By releasing their names to the public, Savannah is pretty much stigmatizing them for life. If the whole world knows what they have done, can they ever reform? Do you believe that if someone commits a heinous crime at 12 they can never change their behavior? At our youngest we grow the most. I would hate to demonize these boys in a way that means they never have a shot at really transforming into better people. With this on their public record against them, they may never be able to get jobs, make friends, or have healthy relationships.

Just to be clear, what these boys did was extremely wrong and they need to be punished. But what kind of punishment is best isn’t exactly black and white.

All I know for sure is that I would hate for Savannah to have to deal with another blow after what she has already lived through. Here’s how we can help her. There’s a petition to stop the judge from charging Savannah, with over 60,000 signatures. You can sign it here.

The photos feature the Tweeters giving the thumbs up, while their partner is sleeping, often naked, next to them.

Reportedly, it was mostly guys who participated, but a few girls did too. One night stands can be totally chill and fun when both parties know what’s up and are into it, right? Well, what if you go home with some guy or girl, you’re totally down to party, and they do something like this? It’s anxiety-ridden enough, going home with a stranger, now we all have to worry about it being Tweeted? Is it just impossible to have a private moment with someone without it being fodder for the Internet?

This totally degrades the entire experience. The great thing about one night stands is that it’s about two consenting, confident adults, who know what they want and are upfront about it. Taking a picture of someone you’ve slept with, without their permission, diminishes any respect you have for them. This person was just really intimate with you and all you could think was: what a great trophy?

Maybe that person doesn’t want a public record of this experience? Maybe one of your followers knows this person? (Imagine if these people attend the same high school, college or work together!)

Why turn a positive experience into a negative one just for your stupid ego? It’s one thing to brag about it to your friends, but publicizing someone else’s sex life or any aspect of their personal life can really come back to bite both parties in the butt.

Even worse is if the person you’ve slept with was misled into thinking the one night stand could turn into a real relationship? Ouch. Or better yet, what if it turns out you want to see this person again–how do you explain this? Yikes.

Just to be clear, this isn’t OK for a guy to do to a girl and it’s not OK for a girl to do to a guy. The reality is, people who choose to have multiple sex partners and casual hookups get a bad rap. Though women arguably have it worse, it’s definitely stigmatized for both sexes.

Why shame one of the people who is on your side? Don’t turn a casual partner into an object or trophy when they’re someone who has a similar value system as you and can help remove the stigma and myth of “promiscuity”.

#BedofShame makes it harder for people to embrace their sexuality and explore it without it being shamed or publicized. Can’t our private lives stay private and our choices be respected?

Apparently, Justin’s Bieber penis name is “Jerry“–and his fans gave it the moniker on Twitter. It’d be a lot less creepy if Justin’s penis name was one he came up with himself, though we’d still raise an eyebrow really high if that went public (and we’d probably give some side eye to Mariah Yeater, too). But seriously, Beliebers? Would you want dudes you’ve never met naming your vag? (If the answer to that is “yes,” please call your fathers and reevaluate your life decisions.)

Justin revealed the name of his, er, Bieber in a recent radio interview where he told fans, “Be nice, and don’t talk about Jerry.” Whether or not you’re a fan, you can’t really blame him for not wanting strangers to talk about his privates. And let’s be real, that’s gotta be an awkward conversation with Selena Gomez.

Justin Bieber’s penis name is a little disturbing. First off, his dad’s name, Jeremy, is pretty close to his penis name. So. Frickin’. Creepy. But also because other than the legendary mouse who fled from Tom, most Jerrys in today’s cultural landscape aren’t anyone we’d want near our ladybits. Although, in a way, the associations of Justin’s penis name with Jerrys Springer and Sandusky are still almost completely appropriate: uncouth and, uh, aimed at tweens.

At his own insistence–and for your own dignity–next time you’re tempted to tweet about Justin’s penis name, just sing to yourself: “Baby, baby, baby, NO!”

The other day I tried to explain to my mom the social gravity of what happens when you unfriend or unfollow a guy.

“So you guys aren’t friends on Facebook, can’t you still hang out in real life?” she asked innocently. Ha ha ha, moms, amirite? I told her that NO under no circumstances would be anything other than searing arch enemies from here on out.

I don’t know about you, but it seriously pains me to have to unfriend or unfollow a guy I like. But sometimes, their douchebaggery leaves you no choice. Case in point: Rihanna, who unfollowed her uber-awful ex Chris Brown after he rapped about “smashing her like a pumpkin.” At least I think that’s what it said, I don’t really speak thug but apparently RiRi thought it was pretty offensive too because she nixed him from her Twitter list.

While the dudes in your life hopefully aren’t this horrendous, here’s a handy dandy guide to help you figure out when to hit the romantic delete button.

When He Publicly Disses You

Life is hard enough without having some jackass pop up in your news feed reminding EVERYONE about how you tripped down the stairs at last night. Yeah, maybe teasing you is a way of flirting, but if your gut tells you that um no, he’s actually just being kind of a jerk, nix him.

Umm yeah, I know we’re not married or anything, but at least have the decency to keep that crap under wraps. Any guy who brags about being a sleaze is just that. Blechh.

When He Unfriends You
Gasp! The NERVE! There’s nothing more chilling than realizing that a guy has unfollowed you before you could unfollow him. If you think a move like this could be around the corner, take back your power and beat him to the punch!
