Obviously Taylor has dated a lot of guys. Four albums worth to be exact. Homegirl falls in and out of love faster than I eat an entire pack or Oreos, which is like really fast.

Since her very public breakup with her very public boyfriend, Harry Styles, everyone’s been trying to figure out why it ended. Well, one insider is saying Harry ended it because Taylor’s a prude. To sum it up, Harry apparently finds the popstar “sexually uninteresting.”

My favorite part: “What she doesn’t get is that the guys keep dumping her because she’s being a prude.”

I have to sound off here. I’m not Taylor’s biggest fan in the world, but after reading this article I’m pretty ticked.

A person’s sex life is nobody’s business, celebrity or not. Taylor can have sex or not have sex with all of her boyfriends, and it shouldn’t matter. We get upset about slut-shaming all the time, but we should be getting upset about prude-shaming too, which is exactly what’s happening here.

It seems us girls can’t win either way. If we have sex with a number of people, we’re sluts. If we don’t have sex with anyone, we’re prudes. Where does it end?

If you are comfortable with the choices you’re making in your sex life, that’s all that matters. You are your own judge here, not anyone else. If you want to have sex, great (be safe!). If you don’t want to have sex, great. It’s up to you, and you should never let someone–your boyfriend, your friends or even Harry Styles–dictate how to handle your life.

If you’re with a guy and you feel pressured, speak up. You’re allowed to say no to anything you don’t want to do. It doesn’t make you a prude to say no.

slut shaming memes made by girls really bothers me. Why? Well, aside from slut shaming in general being gross and sexist, when girls slut shame other girls it’s setting all of us back even further. How? Because it pits us against one another when we should be working together to improve.

But what’s most infuriating about slut shaming memes is that they’re such an epic waste of time, and on top of that–dude, they’re just not that funny.

There are so many better ways to waste time on the Internet. In fact, we’ve conjured up ten of our favorite things with which to occupy ourselves online–and guess what? While some of them may set you back in, say, finishing that paper or starting our algebra homework, none of them will make us slam your heads into glass ceilings. So there! (Please note that reading Gurl.com is obviously the best option, but I’m trying not to be selfish.)

1. Instead of criticizing girls for wearing makeup, you can learn how to apply it.
Wearing eyeliner doesn’t make anyone a slut, so slut shaming someone based on her makeup is pretty stupid, and frankly, it doesn’t make sense. Is a mascara wand a penis? No? Didn’t think so. (And if it is, I have a lot more to learn about animal testing than I thought.) So instead of posting things like this that harp on girls for wearing makeup, how about learning how to do an awesome smoky eye yourself? The fact is, a lot of girls wear makeup out of insecurity–and if you need to pick on anyone else, chances are you’re insecure, too. Check out these awesome Is poking in general creepy and annoying? Well, yeah. But it’s still not as bad as slut shaming. Plus, he may be into it and message you. class="wp-caption-text">Taylor Swift dating 13 guys in three years seems farfetched–and certainly doesn’t make her a slut. | Source: WENN

Taylor Swift has had a tumultuous and often public love life, and now she’s starting to get some unwarranted heat for it. A certain entertainment news correspondent tried to slut shame Taylor Swift over Twitter recently, and while we won’t validate this guy by linking you to his post or telling you who he is, we’ll sum it up: He compared Miley Cyrus‘ somewhat rebellious, loose reputation with Taylor Swift’s wholesome, All-American girl through their love lives. He pointed out that Miley’s been dating and is now engaged to the same guy for three years (the gorgeous Liam Hemsworth). He then pointed out that the Taylor Swift dating life that she’s so notorious for: a rumored 13 guys in the same three years.

Here’s why that’s a problem.

First of all, it’s no one’s business who anyone else has sex with. But since he’s making every effort to make it his business, we should point out that Taylor Swift probably hasn’t actually dated every single guy she’s been linked to in the press–where would she find the time? And even if Taylor Swift dated these dudes, that doesn’t mean she was sleeping with them (not that it would make a difference either way).

Of course, this all comes with a bit of irony. Taylor Swift herself was rumored to be slut shaming actress Camilla Belle in her lyrics to “Better Than Revenge,” rumored to be about ex Joe Jonas. She sings, “She’s an actress / But she’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress.” Not nice, Swifty! Hopefully she knows better now about how damaging that attitude is. Slut shaming in general is a way to keep women down–and when women do it to one another, it stunts our progress and growth twice as much. It’s just as bad as imaginary celeb feuds.

Having sex doesn’t make someone a slut, no matter how often she has it nor with however many lucky guys she as sex with. The only thing that creates a slut is a misogynist attitude and unwarranted judgment from others. Period.

The fact is, Taylor Swift, Camilla Belle, and Miley Cyrus are all adults and their sex lives are their own business. As long as they’re all happy, safe, and consenting, who cares what they’re doing and who they’re doing it with?

Okay, maybe Harry Styles cares. But that should really be it.

Do you think Taylor Swift has a good or bad reputation? Do you think it’s fair to compare Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift? Do you think slut shaming is fair? Tell us in the <a

Here at Gurl, we hear from a lot of girls who are virgins and worry that people (mainly dudes) will judge them for never having had sex before. We also hear from a lot of girls who aren’t virgins and are worried that people (mainly dudes, again) will judge them for having lost their virginity already. And then there’s the slut-shaming that’s wrapped up in all of this: girls who hold their virginity up like some kind of status symbol to slam girls who have had sex, and girls who have had sex calling virgins lame or prudish.

What’s wrong with this picture? A lot. Here’s why: Your body and your sexual experiences are yours and yours alone. If you are a virgin, it’s probably because you haven’t found the right person to get that intimate with or that you’re simply not ready for something that serious. Does that make you a loser? No. Does that make you less smart, interesting, or sexy? No. But it’s also important to remember that your virginity doesn’t make you superior or better than other girls who have lost their virginity.

It’s easy to get caught up in Team V-Card or Team Sex or whatever when you’re in high school–I know, I’ve been there, and it’s not a pretty place in terms of how girls treat each other; but in the grand scheme of things, how old you are when you lose your virginity isn’t going to make a ton of difference. What will make a big difference? How you treat other people, how hard you work, and how much fun you can have on any given day.

Too many guys already judge girls based on sex–what a girl will do in bed, how far she’ll go, if he can be her “first,” whatever. Being seen as nothing more than a sexual conquest is creepy and icky and not okay, but what’s even worse is girls judging other girls for those things. Why would we do that to our own people? Being a girl and growing up is hard enough without this huge thousand pound weight of virginity to worry about. So, my advice to you, girls? Just stop worrying about it.

If you’re not a virgin anymore, I hope you’re being safe (condoms are absolutely a must!) and that you know that sex is natural, normal, and totally okay! And if you ever don’t want to do it–even though you’ve done it before–don’t feel like you have to. If you are a virgin, I hope you’re not too obsessed with virginity and get that one day you’ll probably have sex, and that it’s so totally okay that it hasn’t happened yet. Just don’t do it to be popular or because you think it’s the thing to do, unless it’s the right thing for you.

What do you think about virginity? Anthony, and … Kesha? You read that right. The glitter goddess is on a mission to bring equality to the sexes!

When she first broke out with “Tik Tok,” the Cannibal Queen came under a lot of fire for her free spirited, party girl persona–and whether or not you think brushing your teef with a bottle of Jack is dentally hygienic, she raises a pretty valid point about the whole thing: Guys sing about similar things all the time and no one even bats an eye at it.

“If men can talk about drinking in every awesome rock n’ roll song and every awesome rap song, why can’t a woman?” she sassed in a new interview. She also drew attention to the rampant slut shaming not just in music, but also in society, where the same things guys get high-fived for, women and girls get judged on. “Just because I drink doesn’t mean I’m a drunk,” she griped. “Just because I have sex and I’m not embarrassed doesn’t mean I’m a whore.”

As if we didn’t love her enough already, right? But wait! It gets better.

She flat out asks, “If men can do it, why can’t a woman do it?” And dude, she’s absolutely right. She’s making it her mission to point out the imbalances between guys and gals–and to even those out through her music and her activism.

Though Kesha may not have her face on her own dollar yet, the dollar sign diva is definitely onto something, and we applaud her for it. Whether or not you like her music or agree with her lifestyle, it’s unfair for women to be criticized for the same behavior for which men are usually rewarded. She explained, “I really feel one of my main reasons for being on this earth is to level out the playing field just a little bit.”

A big part of leveling the playing field means not being judged for playing the field. Props to Kesha for being vocal about it!

Do you think Kesha is a good feminist icon? Do you agree with Kesha about the double standards in society? class="wp-caption-text">Felicia Garcia was a victim of bullying and slut shaming before her suicide. This needs to STOP. | Source: Facebook

We were so devastated to hear about the death of Felicia Garcia. Felicia was a 15-year-old high schooler from Staten Island, New York, who was probably a lot like you–and this week, Felicia killed herself after nonstop harassment, bullying, and slut shaming from classmates. In fact, some of them were harassing Felicia to her face in the very moment that she ended her life. And that’s something they’re going to have to live with for the rest of theirs.

Felicia was rumored to have had a relationship with a member of her school’s football team, which is something that is only her and his business. But apparently a lot of people at her high school thought it was their business too, and bullied Felicia at every turn. One classmate told press, “This poor girl was called a slut. She was teased on Facebook. People knock books out of kids’ hands.”

It’s not like Felicia didn’t try putting a stop to the taunts, either. Some classmates said that she complained to school officials about the bullying, but nothing happened after a mediation session the day that she died–it actually got worse–and now police are investigating the incident.

Here’s what’s even more heartbreaking, and what a lot of bullies don’t realize about their targets: They’re people, and there’s a lot more to them than what people see in the cafeteria or the hallway or on the bus. The people who gave Felicia Garcia Hell for maybe dating a football player or for having piercings or looking different (based on her photo above, we think she was beautiful!) never got past the surface. Felicia, and other bullying targets, are full-fledged human beings. Maybe she liked the same bands as one of the people who pushed her to the edge. She probably had a sense of humor that one of her bullies may have appreciated if they took the time to get to know her or just left her be. The person you watch get picked in algebra may bake the best cookies ever, may have a puppy they adore, or be the best painter since Picasso. But if all you ever know about her is that she’s allegedly a slut, you’re going to miss out on all of that.

Felicia Garcia also had problems aside from the ones she dealt with at school. As if being called a slut to her face every day wasn’t bad enough, she had to deal with it online, then go home to her foster care family (some classmates said Felicia’s birth parents died, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet). She was a frequent runaway. Point being, there are a lot more hardships in people’s lives than you can observe.

It’s super important for us, as girls, to stick together, now more than ever. Slut shaming is not only wrong, but it’s also, whether people realize it or not, an extremely sexist way to try to control women‘s behavior. By making girls and women feel guilty for existing as a sexual being, people–men, women who partake in slut shaming–are holding women back and holding women down. We already have enough to deal with in terms of politicians trying to control what goes on in our vaginas. We don’t need strangers in the hallways hassling us for something that’s not their business and for something that men are just as “guilty” of but face no consequences for. (Notice that the guy Felicia supposedly slept with wasn’t a target? Exactly.)

If you hear anyone called a slut, the only person who should be ashamed is the person who said it. The only person who should feel guilty as a result of slut shaming is the person who does it: Because they are clearly a shortsighted, immature, insecure shell of a person who may well be fearful of his or her own sexuality.

If you take nothing else from this: Please don’t use the word “slut.” And please remember that the person you’re tempted to use the word “slut” for is a person–and every time you use “slut,” you’re only bringing yourself down. You’re better than that, and so is she.

Have you or a pal ever been slut shamed? Does slut shaming happen a lot at your school? What would you have said or done to help Felicia? A group of pervy guys at Piedmont High School, close to San Francisco, are in big trouble following the fantasy league they created. It’s not for football or baseball, but there is scoring involved.

These jackasses created a sexual fantasy league, affectionately dubbed a “Fantasy Slut League.” They “drafted” girls, and if they documented any sexual activity with these girls, they scored (in more ways than one). (An uh, we don’t even want to get into the “documented” part–there could be a slew of child pornography charges at play there.) Here’s what’s really scary: Not only did most of the girls not know they were part of a sick game, but reports are saying these guys actually got the girls drunk to get more points. Because, you know, sexual objectification, sexual harassment, slut shaming, and date rape are all part of a game.

Incidentally, the news broke when the school principal sent a letter out to parents notifying them of the fantasy league, which apparently had been going on online for about five or six years. Five or six years. Apparently students tipped off school administrators after a date rape prevention assembly.

While it’s unclear who specifically was behind the “slut” fantasy league, reports say that it’s linked to the school athletes. Problem is, about 75 percent of the guys at Piedmont High School are involved in some sort of sports, so that doesn’t narrow it down much–and it’s unfair to lump all of them into something like this when chances are it was only a few jerks behind it.

While it’s great that the school is addressing the fantasy league and the slut shaming it promotes, it might not be doing enough. The principal explained, “While off-campus activities are not subject to school discipline, because it involves our students, it involves us. At this point, because we do not have specifics about participants or victims, our focus is on education and understanding moving forward, not discipline for past activities.”

While obviously no one can really be punished at school for things they do outside of it, if any criminal activity went down, it’s something that really needs to be addressed and investigated, if not through the high school, then by law enforcement. If victims of the fantasy league don’t think anything will happen to the people behind it, they may have little incentive to come forward and heal. Further, other people may not take the school’s stance seriously if nothing is done to curb or investigate the league’s origins or participants–and that can just open up the fantasy league for another season.

The sexual health, self esteem, and integrity of everyone involved in a sexual fantasy league–especially those who don’t know they’re even participating–are nothing to play around with.

What do you think Piedmont High School should do about the slut fantasy league? class="wp-caption-text">From Amanda’s YouTube video, posted September 7.

I want to throw up. I am sitting at my keyboard, and I really think I’m going to be ill. I just did an image search for Amanda Todd, the 15-year-old Canadian girl who allegedly committed suicide after being sexually harassed, stalked, and abused by an adult man online and brutally bullied by other kids at school. Her story is horrific enough. But what I saw in that image search makes me want to throw things. Makes me want to hide and scream and kick and vomit.

Evil, horrible, stupid people–scratch that, I don’t want to call them people, because I believe people are inherently good–have combined images of this girl, this dead girl, with “jokes” about how she “showed her tits” or calling her a “whore.” Slut-shaming words. Hateful words. On the photo of a dead little girl. What the eff is wrong with people?

I didn’t know Amanda, but what I’ve read about her and seen about of her in her YouTube video tell me a couple of things.

1. Amanda Todd was a child of only 15 when she died last week. (Yes, I know some of you are 15 and thinking, “I’m not a child!,” but you are. You’re an adolescent or teen child, but you’re still a child. Sorry, I know I sound like your mom, but I’m pissed right now.)

2. Amanda Todd was only roughly TWELVE when she flashed the creepy perv who then spent the next few years harassing her. She was a little girl. This adult man was a sexual predator preying on a little girl. He is a pedophile. She was a child. He told her she was pretty. It’s understandable (yet obviously regrettable) on her side. Not understandable, nor excusable in any way on his.

3. Amanda Todd seemed pretty freaking lost. I’ve known too many girls who were sexually exploited at young ages (one would be too many, but I’ve definitely known more than one), and let’s just say that a lot of them later made choices in emotional and sexual relationships that they wouldn’t have made otherwise, just because they desperately needed to feel wanted. Many girls who live through sexual abuse later become more “promiscuous” because they feel that giving or showing their body is the only way they will be loved. Then these girls are blamed and slut-shamed for those mistakes on top of everything else. It’s a nasty, dirty cycle, and it’s more reason why we need to create better systems to support victims and help them start over. And um, the slut-shaming? It has never been tolerated here on Gurl, and it should not be tolerated anywhere.

Growing up and dealing with sexuality is hard and really freaking confusing. From the time a girl is in elementary school, she’s taught to be sexy. I mean, this is just one example, but think about it: It’s not just women’s Halloween costumes that are labeled as “sexy” this or “sexy” that, it’s little girls’ costumes, too. So, society feeds little girls this message of needing to be sexy, and then we’re shocked and angry when one of these girls agrees to flash her breasts? It’s hypocritical.

Obviously, whomever first asked for Amanda Todd to expose herself is a criminal and deserves to be punished fully. Anonymous, an online hacking group, has identified a 32-year-old man named Kody Maxson, who they believe was Amanda’s online harasser. The evidence they have is pretty damning, but we still don’t know for sure if it was him.

That said, knowing who started this spiral won’t bring Amanda back. What we need to keep more tragedies like this from happening are two things:

1. Information
Society is so freaking screwed up. I’d like to say “Let’s fix it!” but it’s a huge, huge project and even though I think teaching men and boys to not be terrible people (most already aren’t, but still) is obviously the best answer–it’s not going to happen tomorrow. In the meantime, little girls need to be armed with facts. Facts about their bodies. Facts about healthy sexual expression. Facts about what’s legal, what’s not. And yes, facts about abuse. And this has to start from a way earlier age. With early puberty becoming more and more common, little girls are starting to look more like “women” earlier, which makes them more vulnerable for sexual abuse. We have to educate girls early and teach them to respect their bodies and demand that respect from others.

2. Compassion
You might know it, you might not, but chances are that you know someone who’s been sexually abused in some way. The current stats are that one in three women and girls have been abused. One. In. Three. Look around at your friend group. Hell, look at your mom. Look at your mom’s friends. Look at that girl at school who everyone whispers about. It’s normal and healthy to start exploring sexuality as a teenager–plus, you don’t know why people do the things they do, and it’s not up to you to judge them. Your life is determined by your decisions, and that includes not just whether or not you would expose your breasts or have sex with someone else’s boyfriend–but also how you judge people who do things differently than you would. Yes, people make mistakes, and you don’t have to be best friends with everyone, but nobody deserves to be physically or emotionally tormented over their sexual decisions.

Watch the video Amanda posted to YouTube on September 7th here:
this is pretty gross. Two nineteen-year-old guys created a Facebook page called “12-Year-Old Slut Memes”. The page has 213,000 likes and features images of very young girls. The girls in the pics are behaving silly, some of them are in bathing suits, sometimes they’re even posing in a way that supposed to be “sexy.” What seems like innocent fun and none of these dudes’ business has turned into a rampant community of slut shaming girls who don’t look a day older than 14.

The page’s mission statement says, “If you post slutty f—ing sh!t on Facebook expect your photo to end up on here, then tagged in, then ripped to shreds by 120 thousand people. Chaos will continue. Go die.”

The photos are tagged with phrases like, “whore,” “bitch,” “slut” or things like, “Caution STDs and AIDS.” WTF? There are two older guys, searching for photographs of girls mostly younger than 14, for the sole purpose of bashing them about having sexuality? Seems like something Facebook would immediately shut down. Nope. Even after a petition was created that clearly outlined how the page violated Facebook’s anti-hate speech guidelines, the cesspool of jerky behavior is still up and running.

Instead of taking the page down, the guys responded with this, “I know we have lots of devoted fans that come on here to see the countless arguments and dumb sluts trying to justify themselves . . . As long as there are sluts, we will put them in their place. Keep the submissions coming guys. We’re not going anywhere.”<div

There is no such thing as privacy on the internet and even your best friends sometimes cannot keep a secret! (Be cautious, ladies!) However, the same backwards logic that says because these girls posted these pictures they somehow deserve to be shamed, bullied, and accused of having HIV, (which is really offensive because it implies that people who have HIV/AIDS deserve it? WTF?) is the same backwards logic that says girls deserve to be sexually assaulted when they wear short skirts, or flirt or maybe have a high number of sexual partners.

Hello, of course girls are going to be sexual as young as 12 (and maybe not make the best decisions), they’re going through puberty. Hormones are racing, boys and girls are starting to look a whole lot better, you want to fit in, and you want to feel good about yourself. Posting revealing pictures may not be the best way to fulfill these needs, but how can anyone expect teens who are just figuring out how to deal with their sexuality and emotions to always, 100% of the time, make the correct choices. Young people are supposed to do stuff like this! (Plus, many of you may never give two chips about their being pics of you online. We all have different priorities.)

Being silly online is more a rite of passage than an epidemic. It is normal, and not something to shame girls for doing. Yeah, it’s something worth discussing. It’s something worth having a conversation about with an adult you trust or a friend who can give you honest advice. It is not nearly as disturbing or reprehensible as two older men spreading hateful ideas about women and real girls they haven’t met.

Teenage girls have sexual desires. They have experienced them since the start of the human race. It is not something that warrants punishment. It is only something that requires information about one’s body and how to keep it healthy. Enough with the slut shaming already! Sign the petition Secret Keeper Girl, the answer is YES! If you’re not modest, if you wear shorts when it’s warm, or skits above the knee–you just might be seducing horny, teenage boys! You wouldn’t want that! Deep down inside, despite your totally normal and natural inclinations to have crushes, flirt with boys or girls you like, and dress however you want, you really are a Secret Keeper Girl!

What is a Secret Keeper Girl? A girl who keeps her body a secret and who only shares her secret with her husband.

I’m not making fun of girls who choose to wait or the ones who do so for religious reasons, that’s totally their decision. However, I will make fun of this website because it’s hilariously oppressive to women.

Here’s an excerpt:

“Test: Raise and Praise
Target Question: “Am I showing too much belly?”
Action: Stand up straight and pretend you are going for it in worship, and extend your arms in the air to God. Is this exposing a lot of belly? Bellies are very intoxicating, and we need to save that for our husband!”

There is no Secret Keeper Boy website. I wonder why? Oh, you know, because guys are expected to behave like horny toads. Boys will be boys! They can’t control themselves, especially when they see a girl as cool as you wearing a cropped top and leggings. How dare you?! Knowing how boys behave, it’s totally your fault for entering their fields of vision and driving them CRAZY.

No, there’s no website that teaches boys that girls are probably just wearing tank tops because it’s summer and not because they want male attention. No, there’s no website that teaches boys that they’re aroused because of hormones and not because girls are constantly trying to seduce them. No, there’s no website that teaches boys to cover up from head to toe–girls hate sex, remember?

*Eye roll* Teaching pre-teen girls to be ashamed of their bodies and sexuality? Not cool. If you want to dress modestly. That’s cool. If you want your first time to be something special. That’s cool. It’s your choice. It’s not the choice of some kooky organization.

Convincing girls that it’s their responsibility to stop men from desiring them is the very reason many rape and sexual assault victims blame themselves. You went home with him. It’s your fault. You wore that short dress. It’s your fault. You flirted with him. It’s your fault. Men can’t be controlled, you know that!

We should be teaching pre-teen girls about sexuality, provide them with information about their bodies, and how they’re normal not shameful. We should teach boys about their bodies too, that no really does mean no, and that girls aren’t created for their sexual satisfaction.

What do you think of Secret Keeper Girl?
