There’s nothing like reading a headline that quotes someone saying “Short hair on girls isn’t sexy” to really keep me from fully enjoying my Friday.

I spotted it in the Daily Mail, and that headline quote was attributed to an individual who apparently isn’t alone in this opinion when it comes to Karlie Kloss, a Victoria’s Secret Angel who decided to cut off her long hair into a bob.

Apparently, she shouldn’t have done that without consulting the masses. The Daily Mail noted that some people said they wouldn’t even buy products from Karlie, considering her short hair. Just, what?!

You know, some women out there probably don’t like how short hair looks on them, and that’s okay. You should do what makes you feel confident and that’s not the style everyone would choose for themselves. But key word choice there: for themselves. To declare short hair as “not sexy” across the board is ridiculous.

I can think of plenty of women who look beautiful with short hair – Halle Berry, Michelle Williams, Emma Watson, Anne Hathaway, just to name a few. That people are even asking “Is it sexy?” seems like a pointless question. Also, I think it’s crazy that apparently a Victoria’s Secret Angel never had short hair before Karlie. What, only long-haired people wear underwear? I don’t understand.

I don’t want to sound like I am all hung up on Karlie’s haircut, because honestly, her personal decision shouldn’t even really be this giant of a source of discussion. And yes, it’s not like I look to Victoria’s Secret as the go-to example for inclusive beauty.

My point though is that when Karlie’s getting publicly criticized for her choice to cut her hair and do what she wants to her body, it basically keeps sending this message that other people seem to think that they are entitled to or deserve something from women in terms of their beauty. Like we should upload a certain look just because that is what is desired, whether or not we actually want it.

As I’ve talked before about how my guy friends always seem super hesitant about me wanting to chop all of my hair off. Even though I know what looks make me feel confident, I’d be lying if I said it didn’t wear on me a little what other people think might think about my hair choices. It’s really annoying.

As the Daily Mail points out, Karlie has made her voice heard on the topic of short hair, telling People StyleWatch, “There are girls out there with every body type and there are girls out there with every hair type. You can be sexy with short hair!”

Preach, Karlie! Short hair, long hair, whatever. It’s not up to any of us to make rules about what is sexy and what is not. Do your own thing and embrace it and no need to criticize what other women – famous or not – choose to do with their look!

The woman didn’t know who anyone was and the name “Emerald” is pretty gender neutral which, again, didn’t help. Remember in elementary school when there was a girls’ line and a boys’ line?

She made me stand in the boys’ line. It was mortifying. I was so humiliated I couldn’t speak up and say, “I’m a girl!” Every time we changed classes, from period to period, I would get in the boy’s line and everyone would look at me like I was pathetic.

It felt so crappy. Imagine no one being able to recognize what gender you are and not having the courage to say so? Awful.

After recess, I discretely got into the girls’ line. The substitute teacher said, “Boy, what are you doing?” I mumbled, frightened and embarrassed, “I’m a girl.” The teacher’s face completely fell, she looked as humiliated as I was. She just said, “Oh,” while the class grumbled with laughter.

When I was 10, my mom finally stopped shaving my head. The weird thing was that in high school I couldn’t wait to cut my hair short and have been doing it ever since, but that’s probably because it’s pretty clear I am a chick these days.

What I learned more than anything is not only just how much we assume about people’s gender from what they look like, but how important it is to be recognized and accepted for who you are. We’d like girls to have long hair and wear dresses and boys to have short hair and wear pants–but that’s just not everyone’s true nature.

Imagine what it’s like for someone who is transgender? If we stopped trying to put everyone’s identity into a tidy, little box and ask them who they are and who they’d like to be, instead of deciding for ourselves, we might save each other a whole lot discomfort, alienation, and embarrassment.

What if bullies were forced to suffer the same torment as their victims? One judge likes that idea a whole lot. When a 13-year-old girl named Kaytlen Lopan and her 11-year-old pal hacked off the hair of a three-year-old girl in McDonald’s, a judge ordered the bullies to have short hair themselves.

Kaytlen sounds like the worse of the two bullies in the case by far. Not only did she and her friend chop a toddler’s hair, but she was also in court for making harassing phone calls to another girl, threatening rape and mutilation. Kaytlen was facing a month in juvey and 276 community service hours for her offenses–which she more than deserved. But the judge cut the bullies and their moms a deal.

The judge offered to cut the bullies’ community service hours down if the bullies saw firsthand how it feels to have short hair against their own will. He said he’d hack off 150 community service hours if the girls hacked off their hair.

Kaytlen’s mom, Valerie Bruno, agreed to cut Kaytlen’s hair right there in the courtroom with the victim’s mom watching and encouraging her to go shorter, and the other bully was sent to a salon to get short hair of her own–and had to report back to the judge to make sure it was short enough.

Ms. Bruno is now pissed that the bullies had to have the same short hair that they forced on a three-year-old. “I guess I should have went into the courtroom knowing my rights, because I felt very intimidated,” she told reporters. “An eye for an eye, that’s not how you teach kids right from wrong.” Fair enough, Ms. Bruno, but considering your kid hacked hair off of a three-year-old (we can’t emphasize that part enough–a frickin’ defenseless little three-year-old) and called another girl threatening to have her raped and hurt, are you really in a place to preach about the best way to teach bullies right from wrong? Because you clearly haven’t done the best job of it so far.

While we agree with Gandhi that “An eye for an eye makes the world blind,” short hair for short hair wouldn’t actually do anyone physical harm–but it would likely teach the bullies to keep their hands, or at least their scissors, to themselves. Plus, short hair–unlike eyes–can grow back. We just hope that in addition to their short hair that these bullies also get the help they clearly and desperately need. They can buy extensions, but they can’t buy empathy.
