Is it really possible to be friends with an ex without some sort of drama? It looks like Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are trying to put their own relationship demons behind them. After a pretty dramatic month and a split that seemed to be for good in January, Justin was photographed at Selena’ house yesterday.

It’s unlikely that they’d get back together yet again considering all the crazy stuff that’s gone down since they first broke up (including Selena’s smack talking), but they may just be trying to tie up some loose ends to end the animosity and move forward without all that baggage. But it is possible to be friends with an ex–it just takes time and a lot more maturity than some people can handle.

I’m friends with all of my exes except one (mostly because I don’t know where on the planet he is, but I wish him well anyway). But it wasn’t always easy. Here’s how to transition from lovers to exes to friends without any confusion or heartache on either side.

Don’t try to be buddy-buddy right away.
When my ex Matt broke up with me, I was pretty pissed because we’d been BFFs even before we dated–and it made him think we could switch right back over to that without a hitch, even though our split was messy (and by “messy,” I mean “he cheated with a girl who looked like she was 12″). I needed space and time to get over it, and he wouldn’t leave me alone. It made him feel less guilty to check in on me constantly, but it only made me feel worse because the breakup was in my face all the time. After blocking him from social media and my cell for a while–and meeting someone new–I was in a much better place to pal around with him, and now we’re fine. If you did the dumping, give your ex room to breathe–and if he dumped you, he should give you the same courtesy. Someone who truly wants to be your friend is someone who cares about your well-being, and you can’t be well if they’re doing something to hamper your moving on with your life.

Expect some awkwardness.
Being friends with an ex can be tough because even if there’s no animosity there, it’s still a big jump from being friends who made out and maybe saw each another naked. If you feel a little stiff and don’t know what to say around one another, relax. It’s a big adjustment and it may not happen overnight, but you can start with just a neutral icebreaker: “Did you see Spring Breakers? Wasn’t it nuts?”

Steer clear of hot button topics–like your former relationship.
Chances are if you guys split, there was at least some sort of disagreement along the line somewhere. Talking about it when you’re broken up may seem like a way to gain closure and become friends with an ex, but it’s often just exhausting. Keep it light, or else you risk the same drama you thought you escaped by breaking up with the dude.

If you want to be friends with an ex, keep your mutual friends out of your drama.
After a nasty breakup with a drummer with whom I had a lot of mutual friends, they were all sort of divided as to whose “team” they were on. Guess how that turned out? With a really mean email from him (which he later apologized for) after one of those mutual pals got a story twisted and it got back to him. It led to a lot more of that aforementioned awkwardness once we saw one another. We’re fine now, but it would have happened a lot quicker without all that outside interaction.

Don’t try to hide it from your current boyfriend.
Being friends with an ex isn’t a big deal, but if you make it seem like one to your new boo, that’s bad news. If you attempt to hide your friendship from your new BF, it just looks suspicious–because wouldn’t you feel the same way if he did that to your with one of his ex girlfriends? Be honest and open, and discuss what’s appropriate (saying “hey” and catching up when you see each other at parties) and what’s not (going to his place alone to watch a movie). It’ll save you lots of issues later!

Accept that you probably won’t be besties.
Remember my ex Matt from the first tip? We’re not nearly as close as we were before we dated. But we’re good, and that’s enough. You have enough friends, so if you really can’t be friends with an ex without hard feelings, don’t beat yourself up over it. Just let it go and vent to your friends who, you know, didn’t dump you.

Demi Lovato recently showed that she’s not too sure how to be nice to people she doesn’t like too much. She recently threw some not-so-subtle shade at Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez in a radio interview–and out of nowhere!

Here’s what happened: Demi did an interview with a Minnesota radio station, and she dropped a line that may or may not have been referencing Selena and Taylor’s high-profile, often-photographed relationships with Justin Bieber and One Direction’s Harry Styles. And it was totally random. The DJ asked why Demi’s fans feel so close to her. Her reply:

“A lot of celebrities don’t open up to their fans. They just tell them what they want to hear. They don’t really tell them things that can benefit their lives. They just flaunt around a boyfriend to sell a couple albums. That’s not what my career is about.”

Obviously she didn’t specify who she was talking about, but it wouldn’t be the first time Demi has thrown shade at Taylor and Selena. (Remember this?)

We know it can be tough to keep quiet when you can’t stand somebody–especially when you’re spilling some serious truth tea–but it’s important to know how to be nice to people you may in actuality want to throttle. It’s not about being fake–it’s about being civil. Here are some tips on how to be nice to people you loathe–and why it’s important!

If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
Seriously. It will keep you out of trouble and make you look more mature! Change the subject or just be like, “I don’t really know her.”

If you don’t have anything nice to say, you can also make something up.
You’ll look even better. If someone asks about someone else you’re known to have a beef with, just say something like, “Oh, Liz? She seems cool.” And move it along.

If a friend betrays you, don’t follow suit.
When someone ditches you for someone new, be it a BFF (like Selena and Demi) or a boyfriend (like Joe Jonas and Demi when he dumped her for Ashley Greene), it can be tempting to talk smack to vent and get back at them … but all it will do is solidify in their mind that they’re better off without you!

Trust that the truth will come out on its own.
Even when you know someone is being fake, resist the urge to diss them. Everyone and everything gets exposed sooner or later–that’s karma! Believe in it and hold your tongue (unless it’s something serious or harmful, in which case you should let an adult know!).

Focus on yourself.
If you already have a hard time figuring out how to be nice to someone you don’t dig, it’s only going to be tougher if you’re expending energy on that person. Work on yourself and pretend she doesn’t exist! It’ll save you a lot of time, aggravation and drama. After a breakup, it’s normal to want to hang out with your girls and vent over everything that happened. Selena Gomez has been bonding with her besties since her split with Justin Bieber, and we’re all about that sort of girl bonding. But when you vent to your pals after a breakup, it should never be made public by you or anyone else–and unfortunately, Selena Gomez did just that.

Selena and her pals choreographed a dance to a really crappy song called “Everybody Knows’” by Dustin Tavella, which is basically Ginuwine’s “Pony” made into a crappy breakup song. The lyrics contain some really profound stuff like “Your boyfriend is a douchebag / And everybody knows.”

In any case, Selena actually mimics the motions of smoking weed (something Justin Bieber was infamously snapped doing) and released the video after he had a really tough week–he was even in the hospital. The video was timed pretty suspiciously, just like the one she made to Taylor Swift‘s song “I Knew You Were Trouble” was. (Speaking of Taylor Swift, it sounds like she and Selena are really rubbing off on one another, and not necessarily in a good way.) Here’s the video:

After a breakup, we know it’s tempting to make your ex look like a douchebag, because chances are, if he hurt you, he probably is a douchebag. But it’s better to let the truth come out on its own than to put the guy on blast, because all it does is make people speculate on and talk about your former relationship. When your ex is thrown in your face constantly after a breakup, that makes it a lot harder for either of you to move on to anything or anyone better.

Something else that makes it hard to find anyone new after a breakup? Looking bitter. And that’s what smack-talking your ex does. It scares a lot of potentially good guys off because even if you’re super hot, really charming and friendly to his face, he’s secretly going to worry about what you’re going to do if and when you split up, and he may decide you’re not worth the drama.

The best way to move on after a breakup? Keep it classy. This means no vague, rude Facebook or Twitter updates about your ex, no passive aggressive YouTube videos, no public declarations of douchebaggery. If you need to get those feelings out–and they may well be valid feelings!–talk to your BFF in private or keep a diary. Anything public or that spreads will come back to bite you in your cute behind. And who needs that?

Selena Gomez is rumored to be totally over Justin Bieber, who was younger than her, and is now looking at dating older guys. One of Sel’s pals said, “Selena is looking to date an older man this time. She finally realized how toxic it was to date a toddler like Justin.”

Selena’s reportedly looking for someone more mature, but we have a warning: dating older guys doesn’t mean dating more mature guys!

Of course, it depends on how much older the guys are. Selena’s 20 now, and the age gap does tend to close as you get older. But if you’re in your teens and thinking of dating older guys, you may want to reconsider. If your idea of dating older guys is dating a senior when you’re a sophomore, that’s a lot different than dating a college sophomore when you’re in eighth grade.

Dating older guys seems exciting and cool–you figure they’re more worldly and responsible, and they can usually drive, which makes things easier (no awkwardly waiting for your mom to drive away before you kiss your dude hello at the movies!)

But here’s the thing: If a guy is a lot older, chances are he’s actually immature. Not sure why? Let me explain.

Back in the day, my best friend was into dating older guys–like, way older. When we were 14, 15, 16 and 17 she dated guys who were 22, 23, 24 and 25, and it never, ever worked out. Not only was it inherently creepy–and depending on where you live, illegal–but these guys were all just idiots. I’d be around them a lot since she’d lie to her parents and say she was hanging out with me when she was going out with them–and technically it’d be true, since she’d drag me along and try setting me up with their equally lame friends.

Without fail, they’d always be impossible to have a normal conversation with (in part because their lives are so different at that age), they’d push her (and often their pals would push me) to go far physically, they wouldn’t have normal or steady jobs and they’d move along really quickly if they didn’t get what they were after–or right after they got it.

The fact is, if you’re dating older guys that are way older to the point that you’d be nervous to introduce them to your dad, chances are they’re going to be the same way. These guys prey on younger girls because they’re too immature for girls and women their own age. I promise–dating older guys probably isn’t as rewarding as giving that guy in your geometry class a shot.

In a new interview, Selena Gomez pretty much hopped on the bandwagon of girls that hate girls. And honestly, this is so annoying, because, well, girls–you know, like you–are awesome.

Talking to Nylon magazine, Selena talked about her BFF Taylor Swift and pretty much said she’s the only girl she’s friends with. “We both experienced the same things at the same time. But we’ve never once talked about our industry. She just became the person I’d go to for an issue with my family or boyfriend. It’s so hard to trust girls, so I’m lucky to have her.”

Here’s the thing: When you’re Selena Gomez and you’re in a really competitive industry, it’s sort of easy to understand why she’d keep her circle fairly small. She may not want to lose out on a role, or she may be afraid of frenemies blabbing her secrets (like about her millionth split from Justin Bieber) to the press. But why single out girls as being hard to trust?

The fact is, people in general, not just girls, like to gossip. In fact, studies have shown that guys actually gossip more than girls do.

One of the reasons why “girls who hate girls” seem to be so common is because of the idea that it makes being “one of the guys” seem easier. And dude, there’s nothing wrong with having guy friends. Guy friends are awesome! But there is something wrong with dismissing an entire gender of people just because you may have had a negative experience with some of them at some point.

Think of it this way: If you replaced “girls” with, say, “Asians” or “blacks” or “homosexuals” in the sentences “It’s so hard to trust girls” or “I hate girls,” it would sound really bad, right?

It’s a bummer that this mode of thinking is so universally accepted. Girls are amazing. If you hate girls, and you are a girl, are you sure the problem isn’t just with the girls you happen to know? Or did you ever consider that maybe, just maybe, if you’re convinced that every girl hates you and you hate girls in general, that you’re the problem?

If you have problems trusting people, that’s one thing. But claiming that girls are hard to trust and that you hate girls won’t improve any situations at all, nor will it make any other girls necessarily want to like you–and it just becomes sort of a vicious cycle. (And full disclosure? It will make guys see you as sort of dramatic.) A better rule of thumb? If you want to keep something secret, don’t tell a girl or a guy. Tell your diary, lock it up, and go about your business instead of forming hurtful generalizations and harboring sexist stereotypes that girls are malicious, mean, and gossipy. Because most of the time, even though she and you are rad, Selena Gomez and girls who hate girls really have problems accepting themselves.

Plus, chances are your guy friends will never give you a tampon in an emergency.
