I don’t always get along with my mom, and I don’t always agree with her, but even when she says something that makes me mad or gets weird about whether or not I’m sick (she’s always sure I am), I always love her. If you can understand where I’m coming from when it comes to your mom, then think about giving your mom a little extra love this holiday season. Chances are, she’s feeling super stressed about getting everyone the perfect presents, wrapping everything, hiding everything, cooking up delicious cookies and sweets–all while you know, doing her normal job and trying to keep up with her friends and her life. PHEW.

Yeah, so your mom probably deserves a little extra something right about now. Here are 5 super nice things you can do for her that could even count as holiday gifts–heck, make a coupon book with all of ‘em in it, and she’ll be psyched!

1. Make Dinner
I’m not talking put-the-Lean-Cuisine-in-the-microwave, either, girl! Get a simple recipe online or from one of your mom’s cookbooks, hit the market to get all the ingredients, and do it! She’ll be super psyched that you’re taking the initiative and thankful to have a night off as house chef! Just, um, don’t set anything on fire if you’re working with the oven!

2. Give Her A Back Rub
You know why your mom’s back is probably hurting right now? Because she’s been lugging home tons of awesome presents for YOU from the mall! To show her how much you appreciate her amazing generosity (and face it, it is amazing), start kneading out some of the major knots in her back. She’ll love you forever.

3. Offer To Take Down The Christmas Tree
Putting up the Christmas tree is so much fun, but taking it down? Well, not so much. If that’s usually your mom’s job, tell her you want to help, or maybe even do the whole thing! She’ll be surprised and excited not to get covered in tree sap and dry pine needles again this year.

4. Help Your Kid Sister With Her Homework
Of course your mom could help, too, and she probably usually does, but seeing you take on such a leadership role will make your mom incredibly happy–and it’ll take one more thing off her to-do list so that she can actually relax for a little bit. Seriously? When was the last time you saw your mom just . . . resting?

5. Do The Dishes (All Week)
Sure, everyone pitches in to do the dishes once in a while, but if you give her a full week without a single plate to rinse, she’ll love it! It’ll take about 15 minutes out of your evening, but will add a whole lot of joy to hers. Worth every second, if you ask me.

If you are a female with a heartbeat, chances are, you’re probably already experiencing a little disorder I like to call Holiday Present Panic. No, it’s not about what to get your mom (glue some macaroni on a poster board and pretend you’re still five), or your dad (macaroni on an old jar–he can keep coins in it!)–but what to get for that guy you like/are dating/are making out with. I mean, is it even okay to give him something for Christmas or Hanukkah? Will it freak him out? What if he gets you something major and you just like, got him a keychain? Holiday Present Panic is nothing to mess with, girl. Sit tight, find the relationship that sounds most like you below, and voila! You’ll be set.

You’re crushing hard
He’s super hot and funny, but you guys aren’t going out or anything, right? Definitely don’t get him anything major or that would be wrapped up with a bow. That will almost definitely freak him out forever and ruin your chances with him. Here’s what to do instead: Hand out candy canes at school with little notes tied to them. Put your phone number on his card with a note saying you hope you can hang out over winter break! Cute, flirty, totally not insane.

You guys just started going out
And by just started going out, I mean you’ve been together for two months or less. This one’s trickier. You guys aren’t written in stone yet (even though I’m sure it feels like you will be one day!) so anything expensive or showy is out of the question. Tell him that instead of exchanging presents this year for Christmas, you’d really rather exchange dates! Have him plan one date for the two of you, and you’ll plan another one. These fun holiday dates will bring you even closer together and give you awesome stuff to look forward to over holiday break.

He’s your newish boyfriend
If you guys have been going out for less than a year, talk to him and tell him you’re making him something for Christmas–then bake him cookies or brownies and write him a super thoughtful card about all the fun things you’ve done together so far. It’s a small but thoughtful gift, and it won’t cost you a ton. Plus, letting him know ahead of time that you’re making something will clue him in that you’re not looking for a diamond ring this year!

He’s been your boyfriend forever
Wow! You’ve been together for over a year?! Holy moly, girl. That’s great. Chances are, you’ve already gone through at least one birthday each and maybe even one holiday, so you might already know what to get him for Christmas . . . but if you don’t, no worries, either. Ask him if there’s anything he’d like for Christmas or Hanukkah–and if he says something crazy like an XBox or new tires for his car, just laugh and say, “No, I meant something I could actually get for you!,” and then tell him you’d like to exchange presents, but don’t want him going overboard. Maybe set a price limit of $10 or $20 and challenge each other to find the most creative gift you can.

Who knew presents could ever be so stressful, right? Now that you’re sorted on what to get him for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or whatever he celebrates, you can get back to the important stuff: Figuring out how many cookies and chocolate Santas you can stuff in your face before December 25th!

As soon as I turn the calendar in my room next month to December, there’s no telling how crazy my brain is going to go when I can see the date where I’ve added 800 exclamation points to mark my excitement over the start of winter vacation.

During my school years, the three week period between now and the start of winter break was hard to survive, with many obstacles to get through in order to make it to the finish line. Pick your downfall – Holiday movies? Snow? Exam-loving teachers? All of the above?

This three week path to winter break can seem like the longest of your life, and I have a feeling that some of you probably can relate to both the excitement and the frustration. So here I am to help you survive through school on to winter vacation through some GIFTs – wait sorry, I meant GIFs (holidays are already on the brain).

Back at school everyone is all “Oh how was your Thanksgiving?” but I have no time to live in the past! Winter break is merely weeks away and words cannot fully grasp how excited I am.

One slight downside to his whole holiday season though is that my family has assigned me the job of shoveling the driveway each morning.

As a result, I’ve been losing a chunk of valuable ZZZs each morning. Even my desk is looking like a comfortable feather bed. Must… fight… off… sleep…

When I see my teacher glaring at me, I realize that this pattern of behavior probably won’t keep my teachers in the holiday spirit. They’re having none of my attempts to play this off as a joke.

Now here’s the difference between me and my teachers. I think “ONLY three weeks left!” They seem to feel like three weeks is like, an infinite amount of time for learning to occur.

Even though we just handed in a huge project before Thanksgiving break, my history teacher decides we will have another project due right before winter vacation.

Is it just me, or do teachers somehow come together to figure out how to ALL give a test in the same week? Because it seems like every single period I get assigned a new project or paper or exam. The “smooth-sailing” road to vacation just got pretty stressful.

As I walk to lunch, I just think “Must. Calm. Down.” Happy thoughts, like holiday presents! Presents to give, presents to receive. Before I know it I’m absorbed in giddy thoughts of presents.

I really wish I had some holiday chocolates to snack on during lunch, but when I open my lunch, it’s STILL Thanksgiving leftovers. I mean, I’m all for not wasting food, but I’m starting to worry about freshness here.

The bell finally rings and I swing on my backpack which has about ten pounds of homework in it now. Three weeks suddenly seems like an eternity.

Snap out of it, self! I decide to finish all those pre-break projects super early this year in order to get a jump start on my vacation relaxation. Take that procrastination!

Four minutes in and the delicious smell of cookies is wafting upstairs. I know my mom is baking them for some holiday party, so even though I know these aren’t for me, I start getting distracted:

Hold up, It’s A Wonderful Life just came on TV?! I mean, they may not play that again the rest of the holiday season! I set down my books and settle in for a 4-hour holiday adventure.

As the end credits roll, my mom is pretty mad I haven’t done any homework yet, so I head upstairs to pull the first of many all-nighters just to get the minimum done.

Repeat this day about twenty more times. There will be a lot of daydreaming about presents, hot chocolate drinking and sleeping instead of homework, but finally, the wonderful day will arrive: WINTER BREAK!!!
