In a word: NO. It’s not gross. Not at all. Think about it: if going down on a girl was SO INCREDIBLY AWFUL, it wouldn’t have stayed around for hundreds of years. Dudes would have just plain stopped doing it. I polled nearly every one of my guy friends to get their honest, no holds barred opinions, here’s what they said:

6 things that will not make you smell good down there

Oral sex seems like some good ole’ innocent (the innocent part is a little questionable, actually) fun, doesn’t it? A lot of people seem to have this idea that giving or receiving oral sex is safer than actual intercourse (think about it, though). In fact, there are a lot of people out there who don’t even consider oral sex sex. They just consider it third base. But here’s a super scary question for you: can blow jobs lead to throat cancer?

As it turns out, they sort of can. Giving oral sex without any sort of protection at all can lead to a rare, but very serious, type of cancer called oesophageal cancer, which is a cancer of oesophagus. A lot of things can cause oesophageal cancer and one of those things just happens to be the human papillomavirus, more commonly known as HPV. You’re probably most familiar with HPV in connection with cervical cancer in women – but research has recently discovered that HPV can be a pretty big risk factor in getting oesophageal cancer. Eek. Just when you thought HPV couldn’t get any scarier, right?

To break it down: you can contract HPV on your oesophageal tissue by giving blow jobs to a guy who is infected with the virus. Eventually, that HPV on your oesophageal tissue can possibly lead to oesophageal cancer (although it doesn’t always happen).

One thing to keep in mind is that doctors have found this happening more in men than women – but that doesn’t mean that we can’t still be affected. If you think about it, it makes sense that it’s happening more to men. A lot of boys never get the HPV shot (which vacciantes against HPV) because the majority of them are never advised to get it, while young women are strongly advised to get the shot – so, generally, women are more protected against it in the first place.

Why aren’t guys advised to be protected against HPV? Good question. I’m guessing it’s because a lot of people tend to believe HPV doesn’t do anything to males. They think guys are only carriers and the biggest issue with HPV is that it causes cervical cancer in women. In my opinion, it’s kind of silly. Since dudes can carry HPV and, thus, spread HPV if they’re doing the deed without a condom, they should be vaccinated against it also.

Here’s the thing with HPV: I think a lot of people have the wrong idea about it – some people don’t know that much about it and think you can only contract it through intercourse. They think that as long as they stick with oral sex, they’re safe. But that’s not true! You can still spread diseases and infections by putting your mouth on someone else’s genitals. You can definitely contract HPV in your oesophagus. And while genital HPV can lead to cervical cancer, HPV in your oesophagus can lead to oesophageal cancer. Scary stuff!

Another thing people seem to believe about oral sex is that it doesn’t require a condom. Hate to break it to you guys, but that’s not true either. Like I said, you can still get infected with some sort of disease or infection via oral sex and so obviously, using a condom is your best bet to prevent that.

But if I’m being honest with myself, I know that the chances of everyone in the world starting to use condoms during oral sex are slim to none. So here is what you can do to protect yourself against a very serious virus that can lead to some very serious complications: for one thing, you can get yourself vaccinated against HPV (and you can get more info on that here). For another thing, you can make sure that any partner you have has been tested for STDs and STIs recently. You can also make sure you’re getting tested regularly yourself. Oh, and you can encourage the guys you hook up with to get vaccinated as well.

Really, just be careful out there when hooking up. This is a giant reminder that, whether it’s vaginal or oral sex, you still need to be careful when dealing with other people’s genitals.

While plenty of men love to perform oral sex, any guy’s enjoyment of the act derives from the woman’s pleasure. So in other words, if you’re not enjoying it, your dude likely won’t be either.

Before expressing to your boyfriend that you’re not into receiving, think about the reasons why. Does it make you self-conscious? Does it cause you to feel less connected to him? Or could the problem be the specific way he does it? It’s important to examine your sexual preferences before communicating them to a partner because there might be deeper layers to the issue that more urgently need to be addressed.

However, if your aversion is simply due to a general, personal preference, the easiest, nicest, and sexiest way to convey it is with positivity. Rather than dwelling on what you don’t like, and potentially making him feel embarrassed or self-conscious about his abilities, give him something else to do the next time he moves down there: “That’s nice,” you can say, “but I like it even better when you ______” (fill in the blanks with your favorite sexual act). Keeping the dialogue constructive will not only preserve his sexual confidence, it might even build it up!

If he just doesn’t ever seem to get the message – or does, and takes offense – initiate an open conversation with him when you’re not in the bedroom. Waiting until things get hot and heavy will totally kill the vibe and might wound his pride. Instead, take advantage of a completely asexual moment (e.g. while watching TV, eating dinner, hanging with his parents… just kidding about that last one) to explain that you’d rather be spending hanky panky-time on things other than oral sex. For bonus points, suggest some alternate activities which you haven’t yet tried together. If he thinks you’re weird or gets “turned off” by a mature, open, and progressive discussion, then he’s not right for you in the first place, girl!

I don’t know if anyone has noticed this or not, but Beyonce seems to be the only one from Destiny’s Child to actually run the world (see what I did there?). Of course, Beyonce is totally fierce. I mean, she made a blackout happen at the Super Bowl. No one else can do that.

But I always secretly pulled for Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Sadly, their solo careers never made it to Beyonce-level. Until now, anyway.

Is it normal if oral sex doesn’t really do anything for me?

What’s normal when it comes to sex really boils down to what’s normal for you. And while oral sex is wonderful for a lot of people, oral sex just isn’t for everyone. Women of all ages have told me that it’s just not their thing and they never have orgasms from oral sex.

And yeah, this can get complicated if your partner just loves oral sex and you don’t share his or her enthusiasm. But, depending on your reasons why it’s not first on your list, you can sometimes change those circumstances to make the experience more appealing. For example, if the big hold up for you is that you’re worried that you don’t smell or taste right down there, you can take a shower break before getting into oral sex. (Let me just jump in here and say that your vagina totally smells and tastes like a normal vagina, but I understand that vagina odor insecurity can factor in bigtime when it comes to oral sex.)

Another issue could be that you’re not relaxed enough during oral sex or comfortable enough with your partner. Oral sex is very intimate, some would say it’s even more intimate than vaginal sex. And for it to be enjoyable and end in an orgasm, you need to be comfortable and relaxed. That could just come from spending more time getting to know your partner or it could come from practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing.

If you don’t have a specific oral sex hold up, and you’re thinking, “I just don’t like oral sex,” that’s fine too. You’re facing an important fact that we all discover when it comes to sexual preferences: You can’t have it all. You may like other parts of physical intimacy better and just not be into oral sex at all. You don’t have to like everything. This is why finding a way to communicate with your partner about sex is so important. Let him or her know what feels good to you and what doesn’t.

Figuring out what you like and what you don’t when it comes to sex is something you’ll be exploring forever and your tastes may or may not change, depending on your partner. The most important thing to remember is this: You should never be forced to do anything that you don’t want to do. If this is happening with you guy or gal, get out of the relationship and don’t look back.

Since dental dams aren’t nearly as popular or well known as condoms, you probably have tons of questions right now. What is a dental dam? How do you use one? Why do they matter? Let’s get to the facts:

* A dental dam is a small, thin rubber sheet, usually made of latex or silicone, that can help prevent the spread of STDs during cunnilingus (oral-vaginal sex) and analingus (oral-anal sex).

* It’s a barrier method, so like a condom, it keeps bodily fluids that could be carrying disease from spreading from one partner to the other.

* To use a dental dam, it should be placed over the labia or anus before sexy times begin.

* You can buy dental dams at the store or online, or you can simply make your own out of ordinary cling wrap.

* Make sure your dental dam doesn’t have any holes in it! If it does, it may not be effective.

* Never reuse a dental dam. Ew!
