The downside to all of this fun is that a lot of us kind of look like zombies come New Year’s Eve–which is a night that we’re all supposed to shine and look super gorgeous! So, how to revive your sad, zombie face super fast before that New Year’s Eve party? It’s so easy, and you already have the perfect beauty solution in your handbag.

Take a pink, peach, or ruby colored lipstick, and lightly dab it on the apples of your cheeks once or twice. Rub it in with your fingers, pushing it up toward your ears at a bit of a diagonal. Blend any weird edges so the color looks more natural and . . . voila! You’ve got color in your cheeks (goodbye zombie pallor!) and are ready to party like it’s 2013! Of course regular blush works, too, but I love multitasking beauty products, don’t you?

Well, 2012 is about to be over and 2013 is about to begin. You know what that means, right? It’s time to start the tradition of creating resolutions we’ll never keep. JK, a lot of people in the world have a lot more willpower than I do.

But let’s be real: resolutions are really fun to make… but really hard to keep. I’ve so been there, girl, and the truth is, it’s not nearly as bad as you think. First of all, if you think everyone’s going to notice that you’re alone and think you’re a loser, they won’t. They’re too busy doing their own thing/wondering if they have bad breath/dreading kissing that weird guy they brought to the party. Trust me that there are people in worse situations than you at that party, no matter what! The only way people will think you’re a loser is if you complain and whine about not having a date to kiss. Resist the urge to hide in the bathroom or cry in public. That, my friend, is lame behavior, so just don’t do it.

So, what can you do to get through those awkward, smoocharific 30 seconds after the ball drops? Obviously, you can keep in mind that it really is only 30 seconds (or probably even less!)–it’s not like you’re left out of an hour and a half of activities, girl! Then, if you really think it’s going to be uncomfortable for you (or even painful, if you’ve had a recent breakup), find something else to be doing right at that moment. Volunteer to be the deejay or get a funny noiseblower to blow out at midnight. Whatever it is, make sure it’s something that you think is fun and that you’ll love remembering when you look back on this night. New Year’s is about having fun and starting fresh. For single girls, that can be the most inspiring thing of all.

A few weeks ago, many of you read one girl’s attempt at a mistletoe kiss. Well, the first go-around to take advantage of a holiday-sanctioned kiss may not have gone over perfectly, but with the coming of the new year, optimism is in the air. How will things play out for her in search of a New Year’s Eve kiss at the stroke of midnight? Let’s find out…

So it’s important to know that normally I spend my New Year’s Eve a little more on the lax side. I’m not even sure I’ve ever made it to midnight.

This year though, my friend has decided to throw a New Year’s Eve bash. She says I’ll really, really, really have fun if I go. So in the spirit of 2013 optimism, I agree to join.

Wait, wait, wait, wait. Who is that head bopping over in the corner? HE IS HERE. “He” of mistletoe kiss failure fame and long-time unrequited (maybe?) crush!

I may not like staying up late but I did try with with my outfit to be festive and replicate the Times Square Ball — I got a little help from a a special website (wink!). I look good and I already can imagine how I will shine when he declares his love for me at midnight.

But remember how things didn’t work out under the mistletoe? I decide to just let what happens, happen. So I make the rounds, chat with my friends, the usual party fare. About a half hour before midnight, I make my way to the snack table. Someone tells me that the mini-quiche are really good (obviously) and I glance over to where the voice comes from.

IT’S HIM. All my “Oh, I am not going to get all crazy that he is here” mentality flies out the window. THIS IS A SIGN! I try to recover with a normal person smile.

We get to chatting, it’s all pretty flirty (win!) and I know midnight is getting close so I am trying to conceal my excitement.

He asks me what time it is and I glance at my watch — it’s ten minutes to midnight. He says he wants to go grab some mints from the snack table. MINTS, guys! Like, “I want a clean mouth for when we kiss at midnight, which you just said is in ten minutes.” Obviously, I tell him to go for it. 2013 is looking like it’ll be the best year ever.

While I’m still celebrating on the inside, someone announces it’s one minute to midnight. I just think they’re joking, until I catch a glimpse of the countdown starting on the TV.

But my watch… it said… AH NO! I knew there was a reason I never wore this watch! I couldn’t figure out how to fix the time on it. The fact that the year says 2046 should have been a giveaway. And now he has already walked away from me!

The snack table is all the way across the room and still mobbed with people. I’ve lost sight of my crush in the crowd. I turn back around and standing just inches away from me is my friend’s pesky brother (remember him?).

My hopes were more than high. I spent more than two hours getting ready, practicing my coolest dance moves and imagining what I’d say when that super dreamalicious guy approached me on the dance floor. Finally, we parked the car and wobbled into the club in our not-fitting-quite-right (but super chic, or so we thought) heels.

Were there a lot of people there? Yes. But were any of them . . . fabulous? Nope. It was just all the same people we’d seen at other clubs, wearing slightly more ridiculous looking outfits, and trying way to desperately to hit on everybody. After about 30 minutes of complete disbelief, my friend and I decided to ditch the idea of meeting anyone cool and started acting way goofy on the dance floor. We had an amazing time that night, but really only after we gave up our totally unreal New Year’s Eve expectations.

The thing is that December 31st really is just like any other day. Of course you can have an awesomely fun time, but I think you’re more likely to have a night to remember if you’re not expecting to. You know what I mean?
