Relationships with our dads have their ups and downs and for some of us there are a lot more downs and ups, or a lot more ups than downs. No matter how you slice it, sometimes our dads can be pretty awesome and provide us with some serious wisdom. Whether or not we actually use the advice they give us is another story, but it’s the thought that counts.

With Father’s Day coming up, we thought it would be a great idea to list some of our favorite dads from TV and movies. Of course, we don’t have enough room for all of the great dads, but consider the ones who didn’t make the list as honorable mentions.

Marlin from Finding Nemo

Marlon swam the entire sea for Nemo, and I’m pretty sure this scene left me in tears when I saw it in theatres. This scene really doesn’t get old.

Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is one of my all time favorite sitcoms, and Uncle Phil is probably my favorite dad (next to my own, that is). He supplied his nephew Will with a lot of tough love, but he was always there for him when push came to shove.

Danny Tanner from Full House

I’m pretty sure that there was a touching moment between Danny Tanner and his daughters at the end of every episode of Full House. Sure, they were usually pretty cheesy but it was always the best kind of cheese.

Phil Dunphy from Modern Family

Dads who think they’re cool usually aren’t, and Phil is no exception. But he’s still one of our faves.

Sam McGuire from Lizzie McGuire

Sam McGuire dad was always pretty goofy and aloof, but that never detracted him from showing some serious love and support for his kids.

Sandy Cohen from The OC

A modern classic, the OC’s Seth Cohen is probably one of the most down to earth lawyers that I’ve ever seen. Come on, he’d have to be to take in a trouble-making kid and treat him as his own.

Red Forman from That 70s Show

Red Foreman doesn’t exactly come across as a caring father about 99.9% of the time, but in the end his strictness stems from some serious love for his kids. And hey, at least he told his son that he loved him that one time…

Sandy Koufax from Big Daddy

For some strange reason, I was obsessed with this movie as a kid. While Adam Sandler’s dysfunctional time as a temporary dad was funny and heartwarming, the most important lesson that I took away from this film was a little trick about bent cans.

Coach Taylor from Friday Night Lights

Nothing destroys me faster than big ol’ super manly men have heart to hearts with their daughters. Moments between Coach Taylor and his daughter Julie are perfect examples of this. My heart!

Cliff Huxtable from The Cosby Show

Cliff Huxtable. Enough said. He was the quintessential parent of the 80s, and I still wish that I could cop all of his sweaters.

Today marks the release of Sony’s After Earth, starring Will and Jaden Smith. They’re father and son in real life, but they play father and son in a really intense situation: being lost in an uninhabitable Earth set 1,000 years in the future.

Jaden did almost all of his own stunts in the movie, but how did his dad, Will, feel about that?

Our friends at Teen have an exclusive interview about how their relationship impacted filming. From the looks of it, Will and Jaden make a pretty awesome father-son team both on and off screen.

What Will The Earth Look Like In 1,000 Years?

Well, imagine that in Earth will be inhabitable in 1,000 years. Scary, huh? That’s exactly the premise of Sony’s new movie After Earth, starring Will and Jaden Smith.

I suppose that its rarity and illicit reputation explains why there is something fascinating about watching it on screen. Its deviant status and its solitary nature makes us feel as if we’re viewing something private and incredibly intimate in a way that just isn’t as evident when watching a sex scene these days because we’ve become so desensitized to them. It’s like a secret being unveiled before our eyes. There’s no posturing or desperate attempts to impress or please a partner. It’s a raw and honest act complete with unsexy faces.

It’s for these same reasons that masturbation scenes range from touching (no pun intended) and thought provoking to hilarious and cringe worthy. Here’s a roundup of a few of our favorite masturbation scenes in television and film:

10 Sad Movies That Will Make You Cry – And Help You Get Over A Breakup

Going through a breakup is super difficult and one thing that has personally always made me feel better is watching movies. It’s two hours of paying attention to lives that aren’t yours (even though they’re fake) and it’s great. Whenever I give advice on how to get over a breakup, I always include “watch funny movies.” But apparently, I’m wrong.

A new study says that listening to sad music and watching sad movies that make you cry can actually help you get over a breakup. The study says that “people experiencing relationship problems are more likely to prefer experiences that reflect their negative mood.”

Honestly, this doesn’t really make a ton of sense to me. Wouldn’t crying over a movie only make you feel miserable? According to the study results, the sad movies actually sort of make you feel less lonely because you can relate more. I guess that sort of makes sense?

Anyway, I put together a list of some of the saddest movies ever that you can watch the next time you’re dealing with a breakup. Get a serious crying sesh in with these bad boys. Have a few boxes of tissues handy… seriously. I can’t make it through any of these without sobbing. PS: There are probably some spoilers here, so be careful if you haven’t seen these all yet!

A Walk To Remember

Any more where anyone dies is already sad enough. Add in an admittedly sappy love story and a seriously depressing song and you’ve got yourself a certified sob fest.

Like Crazy

Although nothing seriously big happens in this movie, it’s depressing because I think it’s something we can all relate to – falling madly in love during bad circumstances and then struggling to make things work even though it’s kind of obvious that they won’t.

I cried like a baby at the end of the book and when I saw the new movie in theaters, I literally cried throughout the whole thing. Knowing what happens to Jay Gatsby only to see him so full of hope… it’s literally heartbreaking.

The Best Secrets From Books, Movies and TV

Whoever said secrets are no fun obviously didn’t read a lot of books or watch television or movies. Secrets are the best! When a secret is revealed in a book, show or movie, you’re like “What?! How did that even happen?”

Some of the most amazing secrets lie in the pages of books and scripts, and we rounded up our favorites for you!

1. Seraphina’s music: Seraphina is a gifted musician who joins the court as someone in the royal family is murdered by what appears to be a dragon. She becomes involved in the investigation, only to discover that there was a sinister plot to destroy peace in the Kingdom of Goredd. She struggles to protect the kingdom and the secret behind her musical gift, which could end her life.

2. The Picture Of Dorian Gray: the young and beautiful Dorian Gray is the muse of an artist named Basil Hallward. Dorian realizes one day that his beauty will fade so he sells his soul and starts becoming more and more cruel, which is depicted in the ever-changing portrait.

3. Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets: The whole HP series is full of secrets, but The Chamber Of Secrets is the best one! Hogwarts is warned that the Chamber of Secrets will be opened and the true heir of Slytherin would kill any student who doesn’t come from an all-magical family. Students start being petrified by an unknown creature until Harry, Ron and Hermione investigate. With Hermione petrified, Harry and Ron find the Chamber and discover that it was opened by Tom Riddle who is revealed to be Lord Voldemort!

4. Pretty Little Liars: the books and the show are filled with infinite secrets and lies. Alison DiLaurentis is killed and her four best friends are haunted by a mysterious “A”. Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily are stalked by A who wants to get revenge on them for what Ali did. But we don’t know what that is! A does terrible things to the girls and threatens to expose their secrets.

5. The Da Vinci Code: Symbologist Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu investigate a murder at the Louvre Museum, which takes them on a quest for the Holy Grail. But along the way they find out that the Holy Grail is not actually a grail, but a descendant of Jesus and proof of his relationship with Mary Magdalene.

“Brave” Heroine Merida Gets A Disney Princess Makeover–But Why?!

Merida from Brave has been regarded as one of the most badass Disney princesses in a while. She’s got no prince wearing her down or taking her attention away from archery, she’s got unruly hair and can’t be bothered by it and she’s proportioned like a normal girl who can not only stand upright but also shoot a mean arrow. But in her new Disney princess makeover, a lot of what makes Merida Merida is taken away.

Merida was regarded as one of the first feminist Disney princesses (though honestly, a lot of Disney princesses were strong in their own ways, especially Mulan, who was a warrior, Pocahontas, who was a peacemaker and Belle from Beauty and the Beast, who loved reading and the power knowledge gave her). But now people are up in arms that all of Merida’s bravery is being put on the back burner in favor of looking more like the Disney princess ideal: Her waist is tinier, her boobs are a little bigger in comparison, her hair is smoothed out and her eyes are wider and apparently coated in lots of liner. What’s more, her dress is slightly more revealing, which her character in the movie would absolutely hate.

Merida’s creator, Brave writer and director Brenda Chapman, explained that she developed Merida to be “a stronger princess that both mothers and daughters could relate to, so mothers wouldn’t be pulling their hair out when their little girls were trying to dress or act like this princess. Instead they’d be like, ‘Yeah, you go girl!’“

People got so mad about Merida’s Disney princess makeover that they actually started a petition about it, because, you know, we don’t have enough to worry about. Petitioners want Disney to revert Merida back to her old tomboy self, which is fair–Merida herself would likely rebel against this new image, or at least be bored to death by it. But it’s also a little sexist in itself to imply that girls can’t be pretty or want to be pretty and still be strong, fierce and independent. You can be a feminist and wear a sparkly dress and mascara.

Which brings me to the only thing about the new Merida that truly bugs me: Her bow and arrow are missing. You can be pretty and still whoop some butt, and that seems to be the biggest Disney princess makeover mishap here. They made her pretty, which is fine. But why couldn’t they make her remain powerful, too?
