id="description_0">
How Does Paying For Dates & Presents Make You Feel?
If paying for stuff for your boyfriend makes you feel used, he may not even realize he's doing it. Bring up your concerns, because if he's in the dark, he may not even realize you're upset. If and when you do tell him that you're tired of spending so much on him, a guy worth your time will find some way to make it up to you, whether it means paying for dates himself for a while or just showing he appreciates you more. Don't let him take you for granted--but also don't assume that's what's happening until you've talked it over first.

Source:
Is He Hard Up For Cash Or Just Freeloading?
If you think he's "forgetting" his wallet and not actually forgetting his wallet, is it because he's a jerk or because he's broke and embarrassed about it? As old fashioned as it is, guys take pride in taking care of you, and part of that is paying for you when they can. If they can't afford it, they may feel less "manly," as silly as that sounds--and it may be less painful for them to leave their money home (or pretend to) than for their credit card to get declined or realize they only have $10 on hand til next week. Talk it over and try to see where he stands and how he feels--and if his behavior is a pattern.

Source:
Are You Missing Out On Other Stuff Because You're Broke?
It's not a big deal to shell out cash occasionally when you and your boyfriend are out, or if you see something you know he'd dig. But when it starts to affect your ability to go to the movies with your girls, pay for gas or books or afford a birthday gift for your mom, it's time to close your wallet. If that means staying in and vegging out together with SpongeBob marathons instead of grabbing dinner and a movie, so be it--at least until he gets more hours at his job. (Or gets a job!)

Source:
Do You Think He's Pulling Away?
If you think your guy isn't that into you anymore, chances are you'd do almost anything to win him over again. But when you start basically throwing money at a dude to get him to stick around, he won't stick around for the right reasons--if he does at all. Opt for a guy who likes you for you, not for what you can buy him!

Source:
Have You Set Spending Limits For Presents?
If you feel like you're spending more on gifts for birthdays, anniversaries and the like for your boyfriend than he is on you, consider setting limits on how much each of you can spend. If neither of you knows what the other is expecting, you may blow a ton of dough on a watch for him for your six-month anniversary while he gets you a card or flowers and thinks it's enough. Neither of you are mind readers, so make sure to communicate!

Source:
Does He Reciprocate In Other Ways?
Think: When you and your guy go out, if you spring for movie tickets, does he pay for your popcorn? Does he drive everywhere? Has he handed over his MetroCard to save you from paying for a train ride? Did he surprise you after class with a giant Frappuccino when you had a rough day? He may be giving back to you in ways you don't realize right away, so your relationship budgets may balance out more than you think at first.

Source:
How's Your Self Esteem?
Even more important than taking stock in your relationship and your bank account, take stock in yourself. Are you shelling out cash because you think you don't have anything else to offer? Because you do. You're awesome. If you need to wear your heart on wallet instead of your sleeve, you may not feel secure not only in your relationship, but also in yourself. I consider myself a pretty independent person and when my boyfriend always pays for me on dates, it makes me feel like I’m becoming dependent on him and I don’t like that.

We went out to dinner for a friend’s birthday recently and he automatically went to put in double the cash for me after I’d already paid. Like, it’s nice, but when we’re out with our other single friends, all whom are paying their own way, it was kind of embarrassing.

It sometimes makes me feel like I kind of owe him back that money he offers to spend. I know that’s not true or his intention, but I am someone who feels guilty really easily, and I find myself making a mental tab in my head about how much it “costs” to hang out with me. I don’t like that I do that to myself and then spend time worrying if he’s starting to secretly resent me.

Especially lately, I’ve been better about letting him know how it makes me feel. I mean, we all love free stuff, so it probably wasn’t obvious that it bothered me until I said something. That said, we’re still working on it. Our own “Ask A Guy” Ethan has touched on this issue from a guy’s perspective, saying how it’s appreciated when girls offer to pay (even if they may protest it). For me, it’s important that my offer to pay be taken seriously now and again. Otherwise, I get frustrated feeling like my boyfriend isn’t taking how I feel about this money-split situation seriously.

I think that just like there’s no perfect relationship timeline, the only “rules” you have to follow are the ones that both make you comfortable, and that includes how you decide to pay for couple outings. For me, it’s trying to share the wealth when it comes to spending the wealth. Yeah, that means I have to shell out double the cash for us about half the time, but I know it makes me feel so much more comfortable in my relationship than if I kept letting my BF always pay for me.

When you go out with someone, how do you deal with the bill? Do you ever feel like in your relationship you or your partner took on more financial responsibility? Did it affect your relationship?
Hi Heather,

How do I deal with the money issues that are going on in my family? My parents work all the time and I’ve heard them say that they’re in a lot of debt. They usually can’t buy me the things I want. I really wish I could do something. I wanted to give them some of the money in my savings account, but it’s for my college fund. I could help them save by giving them my allowance, but I need that money for lunch and stuff! I don’t know what to do – I want to help but I don’t know how. Help!

Aw, girl! Hold on, I’m just giving you a virtual hug. Okay, now onto the advice.

I think it’s super sweet that you want to help your parents out with their financial problems. Money issues are never fun and they can hurt a family a lot. It’s so great that you’re willing to help your parents and offer them some of your money. However, here’s the thing: this isn’t your responsibility.

I’m not saying that your parents should have to deal with this completely on their own and I’m not saying that there aren’t some things you can do to help. All I’m saying is that I don’t want you to carry this burden on your back. Unfortunately, unless you win the lottery, there isn’t much you can do right now to relieve your parents’ debt. That’s something they need to figure out between themselves. As a teen, you don’t need the stress of these financial problems on top of the stress of everything else you have to worry about – school, friends, crushes, whatever.

That being said, there are a few things you can do to make things easier for your parents. Is it possible for you to get a part-time job? Only do this if you have time and it’s not going to completely interfere with school. One great idea for a job is babysitting – it’s easy to work around, you get to hang out with kids and you can usually make a pretty decent amount of money. Find out if you have any relatives, friends or neighbors who need a babysitter and ask them to spread the word that you’re looking. If you’re old enough, try getting a job in a clothing store, restaurant or anywhere else you hang out.

If you’re not old enough for a job or you just don’t have the time, then the only thing you can do is try not asking your parents for money unless you absolutely need it. I know that can be super hard, especially if your friends are always getting new clothes and tech stuff. I’m not saying you should never ask your parents for money – just maybe hold off on trying to buy a new iPad or that new jacket you don’t really need.

In the end, just remember what I said above: this isn’t your responsibility. If you can help a little, that’s great – I’m sure your parents will appreciate it and any little bit counts. But if you can’t, don’t stress. Even if they seem angry and frustrated, your parents know that this isn’t your fault and they’re not blaming you for anything. If you’re really upset about this, talk to them and let them reassure you.

take care,<br

You would think no, right? But a new study was just released that states that the more money parents give their kids for college, the lower their grades will be.

This study looked at the students and parents in a bunch of different schools, considering both the competitiveness of the institutions and the socioeconomic statuses of the parents. Researchers found that grades were the lowest for students who were getting a lot of support at private and more expensive colleges. But throughout all of the different factors, the result remained pretty much the same: the more money parents shelled out, the worse the grades were.

Hm. I’m not really sure how I feel about these results and this study. On the one hand, I can understand why this would make sense. Kids who are willing to pay their way through school using their own money might be more invested in their education. They also might be more likely to understand that if they don’t do well, they’re basically losing out on hundreds of thousands of dollars. It’s easier to waste money when it’s not yours, but when you’re the one signing the checks, you’re probably more likely to make sure you get the most out of the experience.

But on the other hand, I sort of don’t agree with this. I think grades have more to do with a student’s general attitude towards school and a parent’s general attitude towards school. I guess I’ll use myself as an example. My parents paid for my entire college education, but I think I still did pretty well. Honestly, looking back, I don’t think I would have done any better if I had paid for school myself. In fact, I think I put more pressure on myself to do better, because the entire time, I had my parents breathing down my back, reminding me that I better do good because they were the ones footing the bill.

Source: ShutterStock

So is this study saying that in order to get better grades in college, you need to tell your parents to put away their checkbooks? Not so fast. Another pattern this study discovered was that students who got the lowest grades might have been getting parental support in the form of money, but they weren’t exactly getting any pressure from their parents to do well. In fact, when it came to parents who pushed their kids to get good grades and who had high expectations of their kids, it didn’t matter how much money they paid: the kids still got good grades.

What I’m going to take from that is that it really comes down to a combination of things: how much money your parents are paying and how much pressure your parents are putting on you to do well in school. So if your parents are paying your entire college bill and almost never encourage you to study or go to class, you’re going to get lower grades. Obviously! But if they’re paying your whole bill and they’re setting some clear guidelines for your schoolwork, you’re going to do well. Obviously! That makes a lot more sense to me.

One other thing this study found? Kids who don’t pay for their education are more likely to graduate. Think about it: if you’re paying for college, but you just can’t do it anymore financially, you’re probably going to back out of it. Makes sense.

Basically, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having your parents financially help you out with college. If they’re able to do that, and if they still encourage you to work hard, I think it can only be a benefit. And I’m kind of over people saying that you’re spoiled and entitled if they do. If your parents want to help you out so that you don’t have to be buried under a pile of debt when you graduate, what’s wrong with that?

In the end, how good your grades are really just comes down to one thing: how hard you work for them.

What do you think about this study? Did your parents pay for your school or are they going to? Do you agree with this or disagree? <a

A day where I was almost late this morning because I tore holes in three pairs of tights while getting dressed. A day where I got on the stinky subway car by accident and couldn’t get off for five stops. A day where I immediately spilled yogurt on my favorite skirt. I would like this day to change–in fact, I need this day to change.

I’ve been poking around online trying to figure out exactly what I can do to make my day a bit sunnier (taking the day off and hitting Spa World isn’t exactly an option, sadly), and I think I’ve finally come up with the perfect solution. Cake pops! For you! Seriously, cake pops for all of you! Free cake pops all around!

If I had a bunch of extra cash right now (which I don’t, because um, maybe I spent it all on new tights to replace the ones I’ve ruined!), I’d buy all of you guys a big bunch of cake pops. “Why?” you ask? Well, here’s the thing: Studies have proven that people who spend their money on other people are actually happier than people who spend it on themselves. So me doing something nice for other people will make me happier theoretically than me doing something nice for myself. And you know what I say to that? Cake pops for everyone!

Well, cake pops for everyone once I get some cash back in my wallet again!

Have you ever cheered yourself up by doing something nice for someone else? I know, I know. I was also pretty shocked when I heard this. I was even considering writing her a strongly worded note asking if we could just trade places for a day. I mean, I know we don’t look anything alike and also I can’t sing, but… it’s fine. Those are small details that can be worked out.

In all seriousness, she’s doing a little bit more than just pushing a button. She’ll be appearing at a London shopping center, putting on a mini-concert and then she’ll be pushing a button to turn on the Christmas lights.

Still, this is pretty crazy to me. I just can’t seem to wrap my head around the fact that Rihanna is making almost $10 million American dollars in one day. For one appearance/performance. That’s more than what I’ll make in my whole life! In a world where baseball players make almost $30 million a year (cough A-Rod cough) and celebrities can make up to, and sometimes more than, $25 million for one movie, I shouldn’t be too surprised. But yet, I am.

It’s not just the fact that celebs make so much money while the rest of us, well, don’t. It’s the fact that it’s actually pretty normal to pay a superstar that much for something like this. But, I mean, isn’t Christmas supposed to be a time of giving? Isn’t that the time of year when we’re all supposed to be kind and generous and share with those less fortunate than us? I have no clue what Rihanna is doing with that $10 million dollars, but I have a few ideas of what she should be doing with it. <a

Desperate to pay for rent and food, I turned to the site and scoured through job postings during my spare time. In my defense, Craigslist pays better than your average babysitting or waitressing job. (The average rate is $20 an hour!) Why settle for a summer job with higher prestige when I can make bank working for Craigslist?

Before you judge me and assume that I’m working as a hooker, let me assure you that I’m beyond picky when it comes to responding to ads. I’m not one to respond to creepy ads, regardless of how enticing the pay is. Posing in Facebook photos with a dude to make his ex jealous? No thanks. (Although I’ve seen that one listed, and ladies? It pays $100!)

I’ve applied for almost every kind of job under the sun, from bartending to handing out fliers for a restaurant. The most extreme job I ever applied for? For $200, I promised to let a hairstylist cut off my long hair and take pics of my new short ‘do for her portfolio. (For the record, I chickened out at the last second and didn’t go through with it!)

Overall, I’d say that I’ve had a pretty good experience working for Craigslist though. The bartending jobs are the absolute best, where I can make a couple hundred dollars in a single night–and you’re always guaranteed to get paid at least in tips. The funny thing is, I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing when I bartend. I thank God every time someone orders a rum and Coke— I can figure that one out. But sex on the beach? What is that?

I’ve only been ripped off once. I was passing out fliers for a local bar, and for some reason the owner refused to pay me the full amount. I argued with him the best that I could, but I still walked away with a measly $10 bill in my pocket. I’d say he regretted his choice later when I walked out of his bar and told the entire line of people waiting outside that the bar was empty and played terrible music.

It’s times like these that I hate working for Craigslist, but these moments are pretty rare. Would I recommend that you go and get a Craigslist job? It depends. You take a risk to not get paid, and you don’t always know who you are going to be working with… which could potentially put you in a bad situation. But if you’re in need of a flexible job that pays quick cash, you might want to become a Craigslist gal, too. Just make sure you’re smart about what ads you respond to (achem, bikini modeling is not actually . . . modeling), and if anything seems sketchy don’t apply!

Would you ever do weird jobs on Craigslist? href="http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/wellness/story/2012-04-27/Boomer-parents-provide-financial-help/54707250/1?loc=interstitialskip" rel="nofollow">recent study, if you go to mom or dad and ask, “Hey, can you help me with money?”–they’re about a billion times more likely to give it to you if you’ve been nice to them and generally not a terrible daughter.

This earth-shattering study (cough cough) by the people at the Population Association of America sure is enlightening. Seriously, I thought the way to your parents’ hearts (and wallets!) was by cussing them out every day and setting the house on fire!

Major. Eyeroll. I mean in this crap economy, it’s no surprise that roughly 62 percent of 19- to- 22-year-olds are getting financial help from their parents to help pay for things like bills and rent. And of course–especially when money is tight–parents are not going to hand over cash to their kids if they think they’re jerks.

The grossest thing about this is how the study is being hyped like it’s a way to convince kids to be nicer to their parents–like smiling and remembering your manners now can get you money later on. Ugh. Way to write-off every young person today as totally shallow, selfish, and materialistic.

How about us being cool with our parents because we love them and they’re cool to us, too? And if money comes into it, we’ll deal with that later, yo.

What do you think about kids who say “Help me with money?” Do you think this study was as worthless as we do? Tell us everything in the <a
