Yes, bullying is terrible. Yes, we’d all like to see it come to an end and have kids go to school without worrying that they’ll be made fun of (or worse). The thing is, though, that ending bullying for good is going to be about as easy as creating world peace. I’m not joking.

Here’s why: Every middle school and high school in the country is essentially a microcosm of global society. There are groups of people that get along, there are groups that don’t. There are groups that have seriously lost their minds and terrorize other kids both physically and mentally. We’ve all seen videos of kids who’ve been severely bullied, who are terrified to go to school. We’ve seen the photos of the young girls and guys who’ve taken their own lives because they couldn’t stand the daily bullying. Heaven knows we’ve all known a Regina George or two in our day. What goes down in the hallways of our schools is really not that different from the conflicts between different governments and religious groups around the world every day—it’s just on a way smaller scale with (usually) far less grisly outcomes.

All around the world, horrific things happen every day. People are tortured. Women are raped. Innocent people—just normal families, including children—are slaughtered over their religious and political beliefs . . . essentially, because they’re different from other people. The United Nations is not trying to “fix” these devastating events by releasing balloons or selling Lady Gaga notepads to people who’ve suffered because, um, that would be wildly insulting, inappropriate, and insensitive.

I’m not pretending to have the answers here. I don’t know how to stop bullying or create world peace, for that matter. All I’m saying is that we need to wake up and realize that ugly problems rarely have easy fixes. We’re gonna need a whole lot more than a new Lady Gaga song or even a school-wide sing-along to solve this one.

Girls get a bad rap on screen–not for being mean in general, they’re perfectly nice to the boys they crush on–but for being awful to each other.

Ever work on a school project with a group of girls only to be sabotaged by doing all of the work and getting none of the credit? Ask a friend for advice on what prom dress to wear only to get tricked into looking like a fool on the big day? Your BFF hears you humming a tune, tells you to try out for the talent show, and you get humiliated in front of the whole school because you really can’t sing? Nope.

The real cure for a Queen Bee doesn’t exist–because Queen Bees don’t exist. A new study has debunked the “bitch who betrays other girls to get ahead” myth. The survey talked to some really smart, educated, and powerful men and women in leadership roles about their road to success. 65 percent of women who had help in their careers wanted to help others while only 56 percent of men said the same. Out of the women who wanted to pay it forward, 73 percent said they were helping other women. Girl power isn’t making a comeback. Truth is, it never left.

We’re sure there a few exceptions. There are probably some gross women out their who feel threatened by others. Surprise: there are a few men like that too. Let’s maybe not categorize women as selfish and men as leaders. Some people are selfish (no matter what they’re packing in those jeans). Let’s ignore them.

This study is great because it shuts a few people up. Why would anyone want to spread this horrible little rumor that women discriminate against other women? Too keep women down. If girls are convinced that other girls are their only competition, they lose sight of the truth: we’re all competing against everyone.If Rihanna is focusing all her energy on making sure Katy doesn’t have as a good as a sweet sixteen as her and Katy is channeling all her energy on making sure Rihanna’s party sucks–you know what happens? Both parties suck. Justin’s party next door though? That’s really popping. Get it?

TV and movies tells us women are against each other so that we become suspicious of the girls around us in real life. This is just a distraction. No one is against you. Even in a competition you’re supposed to do your best, not trick someone into doing their worst.

Thankfully, you guys all know it’s straight up bull. Television might say one thing, but we all know in real life girls are more likely to lend a helping hand than an iron fist.

Sometimes the world surprises me in a good way. Lindsay Lohan is giving up dating to focus on landing her next big role and it seems that she’s even gotten some of her long lost fashion sense back—her court outfit was actually appropriate–cute, even!

Sure, LiLo has launched a billion comebacks and been given a trillion chances, but she was just so awesome in Mean Girls and Freaky Friday (heck, I even liked Georgia Rule!) that we’d still really like to see her come out on top.
 
 
 
But before she can re-re-re-conquer Hollywood, here are five things we sincerely hope Lindsay Lohan has learned by now:

 
 
1) Drugs are Bad. Like, Srsly.

Lindsay can deny her drug use all she wants but I’ve seen it with my own two eyes, girls. And besides, you can’t change what you don’t acknowledge, so hopefully Linds has learned that pills, powders and anything else you put into your body doesn’t exactly make for a smashing career. Drew Barrymore learned the same lesson the hard way, landing in rehab at just 13 years old, but look at her know–successful, sober and happy! See, Lindsay? There really is hope.

 
2)   Bad Manners Aren’t Cute

True, we all have our little brat fits now and then, but we def prefer her professional looking manicure to her F-You nails she wore to court a while back. Plus, you’ll get a lot further in life with a well placed “please” and “thank you” than a shrill “Don’t you know who I am?!” Play nice, Lindsay. We know you’ve got it in you.

 
3)  Even Stars Can Get Fired

Getting the axe from a job is one of the most humiliating, hurtful things that can happen. Now imagine if your firing was courtesy of a public letter from a producer, and suddenly you’re out millions of dollars, and your professional rep is in the toilet. Linds has gotten the boot from more than one movie because she was deemed un-insurable thanks to her endless partying and stinking attitude. It’s a rough lesson to learn, but just like Beyonce says, don’t you ever for a second get to thinkin’ you’re irreplaceable.

 
 
4)  Natural Trumps Fake

I won’t crucify a celeb for a few extensions or even some Botox. But Lindsay’s over-the-top altering of her face, hair and goodness knows what else left her looking ages older than 25. Linds, sweetie, once the injections fade out (3-6 months) please don’t go back for more! And we’re adoring your old school red hair–that’s the super pretty girl we know and love!

 
5) There Really Are People Rooting For You

Oh Regina, I never wanted to be like you.

I never thought of myself as a mean girl. When I was really little? I was almost too nice: My mom would yell at me for trying to give away all my toys away to other kids! I wish being “too nice” was what I was always known for, but sadly, when middle school came along, things changed a little.

Alison was new at my small, all girls school. She came in the middle of 8th grade, and although I didn’t know her, I’d heard from another girl that Alison was mean and talked trash about everyone she thought was poor or ugly. Obviously, she sounded like a biotch, so instead of giving her a chance, my friends and I hated her from the get-go.

It was like I really had become a Plastic

My role in my friend group was kind of the class clown. Making people laugh made me feel good, like I belonged. So, one afternoon in the library, I snuck up behind Alison, held up a piece of her hair, and said “Oh my gosh, Alison, I am sooooo obsessed with you! I’m going to make an Alison doll out of your perfect hair!”

My other friends laughed and shouted more rude things at her. As she packed up and ran out of the room, I had a feeling at the pit of my stomach that something was wrong with what had happened, but I brushed it off because all my friends were congratulating me on such a good swipe.

The next morning, Alison showed up with her family to talk to the dean. We all knew we were in for it and the regret that I had ignored the day before started to bubble up again. A few of us were suspended and banned from coming to the Halloween carnival. Worse? Alison left our school–I’d never realized that something I could say, a joke even, could make someone so upset that they’d have to change their life around. I’d never felt that awful or ashamed.

I think we all know a couple people who need to say they're sorry.

After that day, I knew I needed to change and start thinking about other people’s feelings more. I volunteered to be the head of peer mediation at my school for the next four years, helping smooth out drama between girls and stop bullying–and I still try every day to spread happy, not hate.

I just wish I could tell Alison how sorry I still am.

I know, I know—she’s your favorite, and I’m being sacrilege. Just stick with me while I go over the evidence:

Really, Tink? Not cool.

Everybody thinks of Tink as this fun, sassy, mischievous pixie—but her competitive nature is way darker and dangerous than that. You might not remember, but in the Disney movie, Tinkerbell is so jealous of Wendy that she tries to have her killed. That’s right. Tink isn’t just cute, she’s also kind of a gurl-hating psycho-maniac.

But it’s not even her jealous, manipulative, get-the-guy-at-all-costs mentality that makes me think Tinkerbell’s a bad role model. The biggest strike against Tink? She doesn’t have a voice. Not just that she doesn’t use it, but that she actually can’t speak. Sure, in newer, straight-to-DVD versions, Disney decided that she should talk, but original, classic Tink? Completely mute. What does that say about girls and our place in the world? That we should be silent? Mmmhm. Great message there.

That's Supermodel Giselle as Wendy--but Wendy is so much more than a pretty face.

On the flip-side, Wendy Darling, the girl who first meets Peter Pan in London and then follows him to Neverland, is basically Tink’s opposite— and she’s awesome. Wendy’s an amazing storyteller, which is what Peter loves most about her (yay for girls with voices!); she’s brave enough to help Peter battle Captain Hook; she’s not selfish or bratty; and she looks pretty cute with that blue bow in her hair.

It’s time to toss the pixie dust aside and make room for Wendy—a gurl after our own hearts.
