I don’t condone bullying or being a jerk for no reason, but I’ve always been drawn to antagonistic female cartoon characters. As viewers we’re meant to side with the protagonist, but  I was always far more interested in the girls that were a total nuisance. When I watched The Wild Thornberrys, I was more intrigued by Debbie’s perpetual angst than Eliza talking to some penguin. Miranda’s disdain for Ginger in As Told By Ginger was always the highlight of the show. And while The Ashley’s of Recess confirm my suspicion that the media loves to portray every Ashley as a total snob, I loved how awful they were.

Here’s a roundup of my favorite mean girls of the cartoon world. Some are definitely meaner than others, but their commonality is pretty clear: I’m not supposed to like them, but I do.

Miranda Killgallen - As Told By Ginger

Forget Courtney Gripling, her bestie Miranda was the real mean girl at Lucky Jr. High. I'm not sure what I loved best about her. Was it her pure, unadulterated hatred for Ginger? Was it her scary cackle? Was it her deadpan delivery? The fact that she looked unimpressed 90% of the time? Ok, it's all of the above. Miranda was a real force to be reckoned with, even though she had a sweet moment or two throughout the show's run. If you don't have any love for Miranda at least find a character who rocks a high ponytail better than her. You won't find one.

Angelica Pickles - Rugrats

Rugrats was my favorite childhood show, and Angelica was my favorite character. I think I related to her as a fellow fabulous only child. She embodied that independent spirit that us onlies have no choice but to embody. Sure, she was a bully, but she was also crafty and incredibly cunning. I think it's fair to say that she would have been a fellow Slytherin. Also, she had that dope toy convertible she drove around in. She was just full of fabulousness and we all need to get on her level.

Judy Funnie - Doug

Judy didn't have time for Doug's silly overactive imagination or the mundane lifestyle of suburbia. Nope, Judy was too much of a thespian for that and she was always serving up some art school realness. From the undercut, to her beret, to her refusal to ever take off her sunglasses, Judy always epitomized cool in my eyes. She's probably doing performance art in the Lower East Side of Manhattan now or something.

Quinn Morgendorffer - Daria

We aren't supposed to like Quinn, are we? As anyone who watched Daria knows, we're supposed to find Quinn shallow, ditzy, and annoying. And, well, she is shallow, ditzy and annoying. But for some reason, that's why I love her? She's the perfect foil for her sardonic, cynical older sister. The best part about Quinn was the fact that she actually developed as a character throughout the series. She showed her strengths and weaknesses, and even confided in Daria when she felt lost. So yes, Quinn is petty and materialistic, but she was also strangely endearing.

Helga Pataki - Hey Arnold!

Who doesn't love Helga? I mean, come on. Helga wears all pink, has a unibrow, and can cough up a lougie while creating flowery, spontaneous love poems about a football-head-shaped kid. Aside from her tendency to be a total pain in the butt to just about anyone who crossed her path, she had a good heart. And honestly, if I had an overbearing beeper salesman of a father, a flawless sister, and a mom who was totally out of it 24/7, I'd probably grow a unibrow and punch weird boys as well.

Vicky The Babysitter - The Fairly Odd Parents

Okay, there's nothing good to say about Vicky, really. There's no heart of gold, no positive attributes, and no explanation for her ickiness. Absolutely nothing redeeming whatsoever. But I like her anyway for some reason. At least she was consistent about her nastiness, and she got creative about it too! If I was picking my team for dodgeball or world domination, I'd definitely want her as my right hand woman.

The Ashleys - Recess

Maybe I'm biased because my name is Ashley, but these girls were one of my favorite things about Recess. I mean, they had a catchphrase ("Scandalous!"), they were fashionable, and they had an amazing clubhouse underneath a pile of tires on their school playground. Other than terrorizing the other students with their grade A snobbery, these girls were awesome. A clubhouse underneath a pile of tires, come on! It doesn't get any better than that.

Debbie Thornberry - The Wild Thornberrys

Look, I didn't blame Debbie for being so angst ridden all the time. I'd hate the world too if I was forced to travel the world in a tricked out trailer with my parents, my weird little sister, a monkey, and some random kid we picked up in the forrest. Her grunge style, her incessant bubblegum chewing, her raggedy copies of "Teenage Wasteland" magazine…Debbie just oozed cool when I was eight. Honestly, she still oozes cool now. I just wanna rock out to some awful heavy metal with her.

Mean girls are everywhere – they even pick on girls as awesomely amazing as – GASP – Jennifer Lawrence. Yes, it’s true – everyone’s favorite female celeb was once picked on and bullied in school.

This seems kind of impossible, since Jennifer Lawrence is currently one of the coolest celebrities ever. I mean, she falls up stairs accepting Oscars, she orders McDonald’s on the red carpet, she’s extremely self-deprecating and she was caught on camera reacting to Jack Nicholson’s creepiness in the best way possible – the girl can do wrong. Who would ever bully her?! But really, this shouldn’t be such a huge surprise. I feel like every other week, I hear another story about a gorgeous and talented star who dealt with bullying when they were younger.

What stands out with JLaw is, obviously, her amazing way of dealing with these bullies. That should come as no surprise – if anyone is going to have a kick-ass comeback to a mean girl, it would be Jennifer Lawrence. I mean, come on.

So, what is Jennifer Lawrence’s advice on how to deal with bullies? In an interview with The Sun, JLaw said, “I changed schools a lot when I was in elementary school because some girls were mean. They were less mean in middle school, because I was doing all right, although this one girl gave me invitations to hand out to her birthday party that I wasn’t invited to. But that was fine, I just hocked a loogie on them and threw them in the trash can.”

She adds: “Don’t worry about the bitches – that could be a good motto, because you come across people like that throughout your life.”

Um, guys? I have legitimately never hocked a loogie in my entire life – it grosses me out to no end – but now that Jennifer Lawrence has said that, I want to start doing it. Like, to every mean person who crosses my path. I don’t care if you’re an Internet troll or my boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend or the store clerk who gives me an attitude. If you’re rude, I’m going to spit on you.

In all seriousness, could Jennifer Lawrence get any cooler? This is such a badass way to deal with bullies. I mean, if that were me, I probably would have just cried, called my mom and went home for the day. I can totally see mini Jennifer spitting on a pile of letters and throwing them in a trash can while being like, “Whatever, dude.” And so my girl crush gets bigger.

If there’s one thing I love after movies, it’s musicals, and I pity anyone who has to be around me when I am belting out songs from my favorites. Tina apparently made a comment about how Mariah Carey could perhaps portray Mrs. George, and that got me thinking about who I’d like to see take over for some of my favorite ladies from the film. I made the decision not to rush my freshman year of college. I had a chance to really focus on school and adjust to new life before jumping into the Greek lifestyle, which at the University of Alabama is its own world. I went through recruitment and pledged Alpha Omicron Pi, which is exactly where I wanted to be. I couldn’t have been happier, and my sisters are my best friends in the world. I loved every second.

But a year later when I was on my sorority’s exec board, I was told about a nasty rumor that went around about me while I was coming through rush.

Rumor had it that I had an abortion.

Cue jaw dropping to the floor, right? Small pieces of the puzzle started coming together. I found out that the time I spent in the hospital for my pulmonary embolism was the prime opportunity for my archenemy from home to spread this rumor. Instead of sending me a message saying, “Hey I know we have our differences, but I’m glad you didn’t die,” she decided to lie to half of sorority row.

I never had an abortion, nor have I ever been pregnant. Even if I had, it wouldn’t be anyone’s business. Regardless of your stance on the topic, it shouldn’t be joked about. I’ve had other rumors spread about me, but this one took the cake.

Looking back, it made a lot of sense more why a few houses inexplicably dropped me. I wouldn’t have pledged them anyway because they weren’t my choices, but still. This rumor affected a serious part of my life. Again, I would have ended up at AOII no matter what. I know the truth, my friends know the truth, but there are still plenty of people that believe what she said is true even though it isn’t. I actually had one girl tell me she didn’t believe me, and that’s her prerogative.

I ran into the girl on campus a few times after I found out. Word got out that I knew what she did, so she promptly ran away each time. I wouldn’t have done anything, and I have nothing to say to her but she clearly knows what she did was really not okay.

Rumors are never good, but if it happens to you make sure to keep your head up. Don’t overreact to the rumor because then it looks like you’re being defensive. I knew if I made it into an even bigger deal than it already was, I would have made everything worse. By not really giving the rumor attention, I was able to let it fade out. And of course, knowing I had the support of my friends really helped me. I just had to grin and bear it.

Yes, bullying is terrible. Yes, we’d all like to see it come to an end and have kids go to school without worrying that they’ll be made fun of (or worse). The thing is, though, that ending bullying for good is going to be about as easy as creating world peace. I’m not joking.

Here’s why: Every middle school and high school in the country is essentially a microcosm of global society. There are groups of people that get along, there are groups that don’t. There are groups that have seriously lost their minds and terrorize other kids both physically and mentally. We’ve all seen videos of kids who’ve been severely bullied, who are terrified to go to school. We’ve seen the photos of the young girls and guys who’ve taken their own lives because they couldn’t stand the daily bullying. Heaven knows we’ve all known a Regina George or two in our day. What goes down in the hallways of our schools is really not that different from the conflicts between different governments and religious groups around the world every day—it’s just on a way smaller scale with (usually) far less grisly outcomes.

All around the world, horrific things happen every day. People are tortured. Women are raped. Innocent people—just normal families, including children—are slaughtered over their religious and political beliefs . . . essentially, because they’re different from other people. The United Nations is not trying to “fix” these devastating events by releasing balloons or selling Lady Gaga notepads to people who’ve suffered because, um, that would be wildly insulting, inappropriate, and insensitive.

I’m not pretending to have the answers here. I don’t know how to stop bullying or create world peace, for that matter. All I’m saying is that we need to wake up and realize that ugly problems rarely have easy fixes. We’re gonna need a whole lot more than a new Lady Gaga song or even a school-wide sing-along to solve this one.
