My 7th Grade Teacher Made Me Afraid To Masturbate

Up until I was about 12-years-old, I was terrified to masturbate. And to have sex. And to have oral sex. And even to just touch a guy on a body part that wasn’t usually visible. It wasn’t because I was worried about doing something wrong or getting hurt or embarrassing myself. No, it was because I was scared that I was going to get damned to hell by God and Jesus themselves, because that’s what my 7th grade teacher told me.

Let me explain: Up until high school began, I was a Catholic school kid. I wore a uniform to school every day, had nuns as teachers, got detention if I chewed gum and took a daily religion class, where I learned all about Catholicism. In sixth grade, we got The Talk. My class was split until a girl group and a boy group and hearded into the auditorium, where they showed us “naked” pictures of girls and boys and explained how sex and the reproductive system worked.

After drilling it into our heads that sex was something only married couples did only when they wanted to have babies, our teachers warned us never to have premarital sex unless we wanted to go to hell and have God hate us. After our school Talk, my teacher encouraged our parents to have The Talk at home too, so that my school didn’t have to deal with it (I’m guessing). When my parents approached me, I cried hysterically the entire time and then locked myself in my room to pray because I didn’t want to go to hell.

In 7th grade, my teacher, an extremely strict and old nun, talked to us more about sexuality. She loved to scream to get her point across and obviously I was so scared of her I couldn’t look her in the eye. On the day she told us about masturbation, she slammed her religion textbook shut and stood in front of us angrily. According to her, masturbation was a sin that was not to be tolerated. She told us that masturbation was basically a one-way ticket to purgatory, where we would have to sit and make our sins right before we could enter heaven. Purgatory was not good, she said. She said that if we failed to right our sins, we would end up stuck in purgatory forever, or we would end up in hell. Then she yelled at us a lot about why we should never consider masturbating or having sex, unless we wanted God to look down on us in anger.

I was terrified. The boys in my class who were already chock full of hormones were shaking a little bit (except for the rebels – they were like, whatever man). I couldn’t help but wonder how God would know we were masturbating. Was he watching all of us? How did he do it? Did he make a a list of all the times that we had touched ourselves? If I went to purgatory, would I ever end up in heaven? My teacher had succeeded in freaking me the heck out.

For a little while, I was scared of anything sexual because I really didn’t want to go to hell. But then I switched over to public school for high school, and things started to change. In health class, I learned more about masturbation and sex, facts that I had never once heard in Catholic school. I heard my peers talk about that kind of stuff like it was no big deal. No one ever said that doing it was a sin – in fact, all everyone seemed to talk about was how great it was. I thought, if everyone is doing it, then does that mean everyone is going to purgatory? I decided that that wasn’t possible.

Once, I let someone in on my fears. I admitted to my first boyfriend that masturbation kind of freaked me out. After he practically died of shock, he sputtered out, “but why?!” I told him that I didn’t want to go to hell and all of that good stuff. At first, I thought he was going to laugh, but instead he just gave me a really weird look and asked me why I would think that. When I told him what my old school taught me, he shook his head and said, “Dude, that is so wrong.”

After a while, I stopped being so afraid. I learned that while Catholicism is against masturbation, that doesn’t mean the rest of the world is. Now, I have nothing against people who stick strictly to Catholicism. That’s your belief and your choice and I’m not going to judge you for it. But here’s the thing: I don’t think masturbation is wrong. What do I think is wrong? The fact that my school scared the crap out of a bunch of innocent young teens who were trying to figure out all of this sexual stuff on their own. Making yourself feel good is healthy, normal and completely acceptable. I still call myself a Catholic, but I have to say I’m glad I stopped going to Catholic school and stopped being afraid of everything that had to do with sex.

How Much Vaginal Discharge Is Normal?

How much vaginal discharge is normal?

ChickRx expert Dr. Diana Hoppe, Ob/Gyn and Sexual Health Expert says:

The amount of vaginal discharge that is “normal” varies. Like anything that goes on with your body, “normal” changes from person to person.

Also, with vaginal discharge, what’s normal for you will vary depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle. Right after your period, there probably won’t be much discharge. At mid-cycle, around 14 days from the first day of your period, there may be quite a bit of thin, string-like, egg-white textured discharge. This is right around when you’re ovulating, which is when your egg is released.

At around day 21, the discharge will become thicker and less in amount. It will be white and mucusy. And then around day 28, you’ll get your period which should be bright to deep red discharge that can be thin or thicker and will likely have some clots.

Vaginal discharge is totally normal and means that your vagina is healthy. If you notice, I didn’t focus on amount of discharge above, but color and consistency. That’s what you should be focusing on when it comes to discharge and wondering if it’s “normal” or not.

If any discharge you have seems off color, has a funky smell or feels different that your typical vaginal discharge, head on over to a doctor. Chances are it’s not a big deal and if it is something, it can be fixed pretty easily. Going to a doctor when in doubt is always a good idea.

Good question! The short answer is you’ll know you’re doing it right if it feels good. I know, not the most satisfying answer. But, masturbation is so totally personal that there’s no one right way to do it.

When you’ve got some privacy, feel your entire vulva (all the pink, non-hair-bearing skin) to see what likes to be touched the most. The most sensitive part is usually the clitoris, which tends to hide like a small pink pearl under a hood of skin at the top of the vulva, tucked between the outer lips.

Some girls find it exciting to concentrate on the physical sensations. Others like to touch themselves while imagining a sexy partner, scene from a movie, story, etc. The longer you touch yourself, the wetter your vulva will feel. That’s a good sign you’re on the right track. It means your body is getting excited.

Some girls use their fingertips or their entire palm. Some rub a pillow, a stuffed animal, or a blanket against their clitoris. Some girls roll onto their belly and rub their clitoris against their bed. Still others might purchase battery-powered or electric toy called a vibrator to provide a pleasant buzzing sensation.

Keep experimenting with different ways of touching yourself. When something feels really, really good, stay with it, enjoy it, and relax. If your body is ready to experience an orgasm, your breathing will get faster, your mind will focus more closely on your genital sensations, your body may tense, and your hand movements may become faster or harder. If you continue, you may experience a sudden release of all that tension and feel a flush of warmth in your body that feels really good – that’s an orgasm!

Alicia Silverstone Is Promoting An Eco-Friendly Vibrator – Wait, What?!

In weird celebrity news of the day, Alicia Silverstone is promoting eco-friendly Leaf vibrators. Hm. Who ever thought they would see Cher Horowitz hawking vibrators? I mean, Cher is about a lot of things (clothes, shoes, the mall), but I don’t think vibrators are one of them.

Yes, I obviously realize that Alicia Silverstone the actress is different from the character Cher she played in Clueless. But still – it’s not every day that you see celebrities promoting products like vibrators (I guess it’s also not every day that you see celebs bird-feeding their children, so apparently Alicia is a little different). Usually they’re just trying to get us to buy new makeup that will make you look like a porcelain doll or a weight loss pill that ensures you don’t have to exercise (sure, that works). I don’t think I’ve ever seen a star try to sell a vibrator. So actually, in retrospect, this is pretty cool.

So what’s the deal with this eco-friendly vibrator? Well, it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like – a vibrator that’s good for the environment. And if anyone were going to talk about how great this product is, it makes sense that it would be Alicia. She’s always been super open about her vegan diet. She’s written a book called The Kind Diet and was once voted Sexiest Vegetarian Alive by PETA.

On OpenSky.com, Alicia writes, “Ok, ladies — sometimes it’s nice to have a little extra…something…when you’re getting it on (solo, with your partner… whatever floats your boat).” She goes on to say, “I like that they look natural and feminine..like leaves and flowers…not scary.”

5 Myths About Your Vagina You Won’t Believe

People have been talking about vaginas, yours and mine, for thousands of years. Word on the street, they’re not so good. Embracing, loving, and caring for your vagina is a relatively new idea only brought on by decades of women’s rights movements. One of the ways that society kept sexism firmly in place was by stigmatizing the vagina. Oh, and it went far beyond the belief that they “smell bad” or are “yucky”. Vaginas, for many centuries, were considered the source of women’s psychological woes and malicious behavior, a sign that we were punished by God, and used as a tool to justify rape.

These are all horrible ways to think about women and female anatomy. Although we should look at these myths as a reminder of how far we’ve come in the United States and how we think about women. Just think of how alienating it would be to be a woman living in a different time or even a different nation today. Appreciate your feminist foremothers and the women who paved the way for us today!

Wait. They Were Masturbating In Class?!

If you thought the guys at your school were insane, get a load of this. Nine students in a San Diego middle school were suspended for masturbating in class. What’s more? They were doing so while watching gay porn on their cell phones in a “gay test“–if they got turned on, then it meant (to no one but these idiots themselves) that they were gay.

I don’t even know where to start. There’s a whole lot of “WTF?!” going on here. First of all, uh, why would anyone want to start masturbating in class for any reason? Second, whose business is it if someone else is a homosexual–and since when is there some deranged “gay test” to prove it? Third, why on Earth did these nuts think they’d get away with masturbating in class with a room full of other students and a teacher present?

Several other students tried to get the creeps to knock it off–they even told their teacher what was up, but according to most accounts of the incident, the teacher didn’t witness the kids masturbating in class himself, so he initially gave the guys a warning. The “gay test” takers were only suspended later when a different school administrator was informed of the situation.

Let’s be real, it’s unlikely that the students would be rubbing one out in full view of their instructor, so chances are they found some way to conceal their handies, or only did it when the teacher’s back was turned. We can’t blame the teacher for not flipping out at the first warning of kids masturbating in class, because, honestly, it’s a pretty preposterous thing for anyone to be accused of–and because he may not have seen it with his own eyes, he may legit have not believed it was really happening.

But at the same time, why would anyone else make that up? Why wouldn’t he look into the issue further? If the teacher did indeed know what was going on and did nothing to stop the guys from masturbating in class, then obviously he should be penalized to the furthest extent the district allows–but it may be unfair to necessarily persecute the guy with so many conflicting reports circulating.

And another thing: Why were these kids using their phones in class to begin with? Do their parents check any of this out? Even if the teacher failed to discipline these guys, what made them think it was a good idea to start masturbating in class in the first place? Maybe if they learned better values and even just some common sense at home, the temptation of taking a “gay test” at school wouldn’t even have occurred to them.

Aside from the insanity of masturbating in class to begin with, let’s get to the core issue here: Homophobia. Why in Samuel L. Jackson’s name would anyone come up with “gay test,” and why would anyone else subject themselves to taking a “gay test”? It implies that homosexuality is something to be ashamed of and something inherently wrong or strange–but that behavior like masturbating in class is okay and normal? WHAT. THE. EFF?! Why would anyone agree to start masturbating in class–and why would anyone else want to watch? (Well, we do have one idea.)

More than a suspension, anyone who thinks masturbating in class for the sake of passing a “gay test” needs a whole slew of therapy, sensitivity training, and, quite possibly, more severe punishment–because if these were adults, they’d likely be considered sex offenders. Here’s hoping this issue gets resolved and these kids get some help.

Though in most cases the Catholic church isn’t fond of nearly anything sexual happening between anyone who isn’t married, one nun is coming out in favor of masturbation–specifically, female masturbation–and raising Hell with the Vatican.

Sister Margaret Farley published a book called Just Love, a Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics, and because of its content (in addition to supporting both male and female masturbation, she also endorses gay marriage and doesn’t look down on divorce), she’s coming under fire for preaching “radical feminist ideas.” We think it’s important to note that Sister Farley did warn that the book shouldn’t be used by Catholic educators, so it’s not like she was deliberately, directly, nor overtly preaching against the church’s beliefs to its followers.

With all due respect to the Catholic church and its followers, what her higher-ups are calling “radical feminist ideas,” a lot of us call “common sense.” Because guess what? Masturbation is pretty popular, not all marriages work, and not allowing gays to marry is sort of creating a “separate but equal” doctrine that was tossed out with the first Civil Rights Movement. It’s one thing to be too scared or complacent to want move forward, but this kind of outdated thinking is setting people back.

The other thing is, the people who oppose Farley’s teachings in the book probably haven’t even read it through carefully and just had knee-jerk reactions to words like “masturbation.” In the tome, she actually says masturbation–especially female masturbation–wouldn’t necessarily be a substitute for sexual relationships among committed partners, but actually a way to make them better. She explains that both male and female masturbation let partners figure out what gets them off, which will make sex with their partner better later on. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

But that’s exactly what bugs them the most. The excerpt they cite most in badmouthing Farley’s work is the following bit on female masturbation, in which she explains how female masturbation benefits not only women but their husbands: “[Many women] have found great good in self-pleasuring–perhaps especially in the discovery of their own possibilities for pleasure–something many had not experienced or even known about in their ordinary sexual relations with husbands or lovers.” She finishes by saying that female masturbation “actually serves relationships rather than hindering them.”

We agree! If masturbation can help you in your sex life, it’ll inevitably help your relationship as well–because if you’re with a guy who makes sex feel less than stellar, you’re not going to be happy. And when you’re miserable, what’s the point of being attached? It sounds like Farley may have been pointing to the fact that maybe–just maybe–female masturbation may actually prevent the also-looked-down-upon divorce epidemic.

We understand the thinking that sex should only be for procreation (though goodness knows a lot of us don’t agree with it). But the reason sex is supposed to feel good is because if it didn’t, we as a species wouldn’t do it–and then we’d probably die out. We also understand wanting to adhere to old standards and traditions, but that’s not always a good idea to sustain a system or institution–think of it this way: If we didn’t change our thinking at all over time, girls still wouldn’t get an education or be allowed to vote, and women and girls wouldn’t be allowed to wear pants. Ridiculous, right?!

Whether or not you think evolution is what got us here, sometimes it’s necessary to survive. Perhaps if the Catholic church evolved its thinking on female masturbation–among other things–there would be less conflict between nuns and the Vatican–and more women and girls devoted to its teachings.
