Obviously with the summer heat, it can be difficult to keep your makeup in place. Even if you’ve conquered being greasy, sometimes your makeup just won’t stay on. And while you don’t need to wear makeup to the beach or the pool, you may want a little bit on here and there if you feel like it.

One of my favorite things about summer is that you can get totally minimal with your makeup routine. When it’s hot, sticky and humid outside, the last thing you want to do is layer on piles of foundation and concealer. And why would you need to? If you get a healthy dose of sun, you’ll look brighter on your own! Also, who wants to wear makeup to the beach or pool? Ick.

On the flip side, you can also be a little bit more adventurous with your makeup during the summertime. ‘Tis the season to sport some neon and not only on your clothes and accessories – a fun summer night can be the perfect time to try out bright eye shadow and lip colors.

Can Your Lipstick Give You STDs?

You already know that expired makeup products aren’t very good for you. That old tube of mascara can give you some gnarly eye infections. But can your lipstick or other lip products give you an STD?

The scary answer is yes.

A woman named Starkeema Greenidge from Harlem is suing MAC Cosmetics because she claims she got herpes from sampling MAC’s RiRi Woo at a Rihanna concert.

She’s taking the case to Manhattan’s Supreme Court and stated, “The company should train its employees to use disposable tubes or swabs to apply the lipstick. This is going to happen over and over again if nothing is done.” While this seems like a far-fetched claim, it actually can happen!

Now, this lady claims that MAC applied the lipstick to her from the tube directly, which is a major no-no in the makeup world. If you’re testing products or getting your makeup done at a counter, be aware of how they’re applying the product. That product should have been sanitized and applied with a fresh applicator, not directly from the tube. Even though makeup artists should be aware of these things, you as a consumer should also be on the lookout.

But these situations don’t just happen at makeup counters. I hope that you wouldn’t use a mascara tube that someone else has used (even your BFF), but a lot of girls share lipstick and chapstick like it’s their day job!

You definitely shouldn’t share lip products with a stranger because, well, you don’t know where their mouth has been. But you shouldn’t even share with your closest friends. It’s just best to keep your lip stuff to yourself!

Larry Beatty, M.D., says “If you had chapped lips or a break in the skin and swipe on a lipstick that someone used that’s infected with the herpes simplex virus, then you’re more susceptible to contracting it. But even if your skin is 100 percent intact, it’s still not a guarantee that you’d be protected from getting it; there is still a degree of risk.”

The best thing to do is to not share your lip products. I know it sounds a bit selfish, and one of your friends is probably going to get annoyed with you when she needs to borrow some lip balm. But I think avoiding STDs gives you full permission to be a makeup snob.

Ask A Guy: Do Guys Like Makeup?

Dear Ethan,

Do guys like makeup or care if girls wear makeup? Like, do they notice when we wear it at all? Is it a turnoff when we wear a lot of makeup? Sometimes I feel like I have to wear makeup to impress guys but then sometimes I feel like maybe they don’t like it. I’m so confused.

How much and what kind of makeup you wear isn’t entirely lost on guys – but just as with lingerie (as discussed in last week’s post), the type and amount of attention we give to makeup is quite different from that of you ladies.

For one thing, since we never wear it ourselves (minus rock stars, gay men, and Russell Brand), makeup isn’t something that guys spend much time thinking about. In fact, when it does pop into our consciousness, it’s likely only because a lady’s makeup is especially bad. Good or bad makeup still won’t permanently make or break your chances with any guy, but it might help you to grab or divert his attention. Generally, a successful female makeup job could be considered one which a guy won’t notice at all.

That’s not to say men find makeup inherently unattractive – we just don’t want to be preoccupied by it while looking longingly into your mascara-drenched raccoon eyes. There will always be the rare dude who’s simply into the “porn star look,” but makeup should ultimately be used – if at all – to subtly enhance your natural beauty, rather than turn you into something entirely different (e.g. a circus clown).

Of course, some women may suffer from more serious cases of acne or skin conditions that cut into self-confidence. In such scenarios, the treatment of the actual problem should always be of primary importance - try leaning on excessively heavy foundation and concealer only as temporary solutions in emergency situations. Lots of guys (including myself) would prefer to date a girl who handles such surface flaws more honestly rather than painstakingly covering them up every day. I think you’ll find that you’ll get much more attention from guys by accepting your imperfections with confidence while accentuating those of your features that you are indeed proud of!

The Foolproof Guide To Taking Off Your Lipstick

Lipstick is one of my absolute favorite makeup products. Red lipstick, in particular. But if you’re wearing a long-lasting color or using a lip stain, it can be really difficult to get that color off. And even if you remove most of it, you’re still left with a hint of it which can get all over your white towels when you dry your face off after cleansing. Totally happens to me like every time.

Well, a few lipstick-stained towels later, and I’ve finally figured out just how to get all my lipstick off. Seriously, all of it. Not even a stitch left over!

You Need: Aquaphor or Vaseline

Obviously, Aquaphor is my go-to. Don't use a makeup remover for this, trust me.

You Need: Cotton Rounds

Not cotton balls. Those are too fuzzy. Cotton squares would also work.

You Need: A Toothbrush

Not the one you use every day to brush your teeth.

This Is Long-Lasting Lipstick

This is a serious wear lipstick. Like it doesn't come off.

Slather On Some Aquaphor/Vaseline

Seriously, get gross with it. Just make a nice, thick layer over your lip color.

Wait 5 Minutes

I know 5 minutes is a long time to sit around, but play a level of Candy Crush Saga or study some flashcards while you wait.

Press Down Cotton Round

I say press it down because you don't want the Aquaphor to go everywhere. So press it down on your lips and let it kind of absorb. Then, slide it off your lips.

See?

If your lip color is super dark, you may have to repeat this process one more time. Fortunately, this pink color isn't too dark.

Brush It Off

You might be left with a tint from your lipstick and maybe some dry, colored flakes. This is where the toothbrush comes in. Wet the toothbrush and gently brush in circular motions on your lips. This will remove the leftover color and exfoliate at the same time.

And Done

And you're all set! No lip color here.

Mwah!

I thought we were going to ease into the summer heat, but I was wrong. It’s been hot as all Hades out lately, and while I appreciate the warmth as opposed to the glacial winter we had, I’m getting too hot.

I’m keeping my sweating at bay though with my favorite anti-sweat products, but those don’t always stop me from getting a little greasy and shiny. Now, there’s a difference between the healthy, dewy look and the greasy look. Dewy is cute, greasy is not.

The Foolproof Guide To Removing Eye Makeup

You know when you try to use makeup remover, but it doesn’t quite get everything off and then you wash your face and end up with mascara dripping down your cheeks? Or you have a consistent layer of mascara stuck on your eyes because you just can’t get all of it off so you start picking it off and lose a bunch of lashes?

Yeah, I know how it goes. My towels used to be covered in smears of eye makeup from trying to rub it all off after I washed my face. My pillow cases had tiny remnants of eyeliner. It was a rough time in my life.

But then I learned how to actually take my eye makeup off the right way. Trust me, this works! Click through below for your foolproof guide to removing eye makeup!

So You Have A Lot Of Eye Makeup On

I had a lot on to show that this really works! Learn how to do the cat eye I have on right here.

You Need: Cotton Rounds

Or cotton balls. I like the rounds because they remove more.

You Need: Aquaphor, Vaseline Or Makeup Remover

Aquaphor is my go-to makeup remover. I find makeup removers to be too oily. Aquaphor and Vaseline are also cheaper. I've had this tub for over a year, and it's still full.

You Need: Facial Cleansing Wipes

Preferably something for sensitive skin because your eyes are soft little creatures! I recommend these by Say Yes To Cucumbers just in general to do a quick clean of your face in the morning.

Apply Remover To Cotton Round

Like so. You do not need a lot! Not even like a pea sized amount.

Place And Hold Over Eye

And by this I mean pat the cotton round so your whole eye is covered by remover. Then hold it in place for about 30-45 seconds.

Press Lashes Between Round

GENTLY grip your lashes between the cotton round and kind of squish them to work off that mascara.

Poof!

Told you it would work.

Remove Excess Remover

I like to use face cleansing wipes to get off any oily residue from the remover. I don't like to have greasy eyes. You can also use a wet cotton round.

Ta-Da!

Repeat on the other eye! You're done!

Close Up

And here's a close up. It really did come off.

10 Beauty Blunders And How To Fix Them

I may be a whiz with a makeup brush and hairspray, but even I make beauty mistakes. Like every day. My mom spills something on her shirt every time she eats, I mess up my makeup every time I do it. The apple does not fall far from the tree.

Whether it’s hitting myself in the face with my mascara wand or accidentally applying dark bronzer instead of my blush, I’m a pro at screwing up my morning routine. Thankfully though, I know how to fix my beauty blunders. I’ve been a clumsy girl my whole life, so I’ve just learned how to roll with the punches.

And now I’m going to teach you! Find out how to fix these 10 common beauty blunders!

Blunder: Too Much Perfume

How To Fix It: Grab a cotton ball and some rubbing alcohol and dab it on the areas where you over-sprayed. In a pinch, you can use an unscented lotion.

Blunder: Too Much Bronzer/Blush

How To Fix It: Use a blending sponge or kabuki brush to blend out the color. Applying a small amount of translucent powder will help reduce the color.

Blunder: Mascara Smudges On Eyelids

How To Fix It: Wait for it to dry! Seriously. Let it dry and then using a cotton round or q-tip, carefully wipe it off. It will flake instead of smudge.

Blunder: Leftover Makeup Remover

How To Fix It: After using makeup remover, there can be oily residue. Use a dry cotton round to wipe off the excess oil and then use another with a facial cleanser to remove it.

Blunder: Too Much Self-Tanner

How To Fix It: Exfoliate your skin using a body sponge and a mixture of water and baking soda. The baking soda will help lighten the tanner.

Blunder: Too Much Conditioner

How To Fix It: Give yourself light shampoo and focus on your roots. If you've noticed you used too much after your hair is dry, use dry shampoo or baby powder to soak up the extra moisture.

Blunder: Smudged Nail Polish

How To Fix It: First, I know this is a little gross, but quickly lick your nail. This will smooth out the smudge. Then apply another top coat.

Blunder: Too Much Hair Spray

How To Fix It: Use your fingers to break up the section of hair. Then carefully brush it out with a regular brush or wide-toothed comb.

Blunder: Smudged Lipstick Or Lipstick On Your Teeth

How To Fix It: For smudged lipstick, grab a makeup removing wipe or cotton ball with makeup remover. Instead of wiping it off, hold the makeup remover on the smudge for a few seconds and gently work it off. To avoid lipstick on the teeth, place a tissue over your pointer finger. Stick your finger in your mouth and pull it out. This will wipe off the excess lipstick that gets on your teeth!

Blunder: Smudged Liner Under Your Eyes

How To Fix It: Apply some eye primer underneath your eyes. After you're done applying your makeup, apply a finishing powder underneath your lashline. This will prevent anything from sticking!

The Foolproof Guide To Getting The Perfect Cat Eye

The first time a tried to do a cat eye, I ended up looking like a raccoon. It didn’t go well. But that was a long time ago, and I have since perfected the art of the cat eye. I’m a cat eye master, and you can be too!

The cat eye is sexy and definitely suited for nighttime, but I rock one almost every day! The beauty of this style is that you can change it to fit day or night. You can dress it up or dress it down. I know it’s intimidating, but I’m going to show you the easiest way to get a cat eye.

You Need: Eye Primer

This is a sample I got from NARS, and I'm really loving it. I always use a primer when I do any eye makeup. It keeps everything in place!

You Need: Eyeliner

This is Maybelline's Master Precise eyeliner marker. It is my favorite eyeliner ever in the history of eyeliners. GET A MARKER.

You Need: Q-Tips

For clean up or adjusting if you need to!

Apply Primer

Apply your primer onto your lid and under the outer corner of your eye. Let it dry completely.

Dot Your Eyelid

Mark your eyelid along your lash line and past the outer corner to where you want the end of your cat eye to be.

Like So

This way you can connect the dots, and it's easy as pie.

Line Your Lid

Starting from the inner corner of your lid, line to the outer corner and stop. This shouldn't be a super thick line.

It Should Look Like This

You should stop at the outer corner so you can make the wing of your cat eye.

Make The Wing

I like to make mine by starting at the final dot and pulling downward to meet the corner of my eye. You're creating a slightly diagonal wing here. This will ensure that the point of your wing is thinner to get the cat eye look.

See?

Your wing should sort of flick out up toward your brow.

Fill In On The Lower Lashline

Look up and line around the corner of your eye under the wing. Lightly line under your lash line and make sure there are no gaps.

Ta-Da!

Repeat on your other eye, remove any stray liner with your Q-tips and finish off with a coat of mascara. I can't stress enough how easy this is with a marker liner. You have so much more control, and you can get this look in under 5 minutes!

Meow

You can make your cat eye thicker or thinner depending on how you like it. I always go thinner along my lid and fairly thick on the wing.
