And when the reporter asked if she ever had a relationship with another woman, Zoe responded “Promise me one thing: You’re going to ask this question [in the article]—if you choose to, just put three dots as my response. That’s it.”

So here we have a high profile woman basically telling you to love who you love and do what you do. That’s pretty awesome, no?

And I whole-heartedly agree. I know a lot of people struggle with their sexuality and how they identify themselves. But the truth is, you don’t have to identify yourself. You don’t have to label yourself. If you’re not sure what you identify as, that’s completely okay.

While we’re still working toward equality and acceptance of all people in society, there has been tremendous progress over the years. People are becoming more accepting, which is wonderful. I hope one day that it’s a complete non-issue.

You are allowed to be a lesbian or gay or bi or trans or not even remotely sure. If you’re questioning your sexuality, that’s totally fine. I feel like there’s a lot of pressure still for people to put an identifier on themselves. Well, you don’t have to identify yourself. You don’t have to label yourself. You can be sure or not sure. As long as you are happy with yourself and your life, that’s what matters.

You do not have to confine yourself to the rules of being straight or gay. I’ve often thought about my own dating life. I date guys, but does that mean I won’t fall in love with a girl? I don’t think so. I think anything can happen when it comes to love. Love is not an emotion that can be easily controlled. I think I will fall in love and marry a person, and I don’t know who that person will be regardless of gender.

Figuring yourself out is hard, I know. But take some of the pressure off yourself by not feeling like you have to identify one way or another. Just be. Exist and be and do what makes you happy.

When you’re having relationship problems, it can be super tempting to just make a list of relationship rules to follow–and sometimes people do that! But some people are taking it a step further will all-out love contracts. These can dictate everything from how often you go out on dates to how many nights a week you have sex. Say what?!

Experts are at odds as to whether or not having a love contract is actually good for your relationship. And frankly, I’m not sure they’d really help matters at all.

If you feel the need to sit down and draw up a list of written rules–not much different from the prenuptial agreements people have before they get married, some of which include special clauses for cheating, haircuts and even weight gain–can your relationship really be worth salvaging to begin with?

And with the sex contracts, um, dude, seriously? What happens if you’re just not in the mood, on your period or if he’s too tired to perform well? Are you gonna whip out a piece of loose leaf paper that you guys signed and be like, “But it says right here that we need to do this twice a week!” This opens up a whole can of consensual worms that are probably best left avoided. (Plus, isn’t it more fun when sex happens naturally when you both just want it?)

There are, however, two good things that a relationship contract may bring: in terms of a sex contract, instead of how much you’re willing to have or what you’re necessarily open to doing–because those can change really easily and often–why not just reinforce the fact that you always want protection? And in terms of your emotional relationship, drawing up a contract–or even just talking about it–leads to open communication. By sitting down and hashing out what each of you wants and expects from your partner, you’re each more likely to deliver than if you’d both just expected the other person to just magically read your mind.

When you start dating someone new, the number one thing you start thinking about is probably when you should make your relationship official. Am I right? Wondering when to start calling that dude you’ve been hooking up with your boyfriend can be super stressful. If you say it at the wrong time, it can destroy any chance of a future relationship – but the same thing can happen if you wait too long. Argh.

Well, a recent study done by both Zoosk and Glamour revealed something a little bit surprising about when to make things official. They took a look at over 1,000 girls and 1,000 dudes and this is what they found: 25 percent of women think that you should wait “at least a few months” before making things legit, while 43 percent of guys thought “it takes a couple of good dates.”

So, how do you know when to make your sort-of-relationship an official relationship? That can be a little bit tricky.

Here’s something important that you need to remember: you have every right to ask the dude you’ve been hooking up with what he wants and if he’s interested in being your boyfriend. I know too many girls who are too afraid to ever bring up the Big Talk because they’re worried that it’s going to scare the guy off. That is ridiculous. 

Listen, girls: if bringing up the r-word (relationship) is really going to scare the guy off, then he was never interested in seriously dating you to begin with and waiting longer was most likely not going to change that. That may sound harsh, but it’s true. If a guy is interested and worth your time, he’s not going to go running out the door when you ask him about being boyfriend and girlfriend.

Back to the first question. How do you know when it’s time to bring it up? I’m siding with the guys here: it’s best to wait until after a couple of great dates and hang out seshs. Don’t be all like, “BE MY BOYFRIEND” in the middle of a first date, okay? That will freak anyone out. Wait a few weeks, after you guys have been hanging out for a little while. This will give you both time to get to know each other and to figure out if you’d like to be in a relationship together. It will also give you time to get more comfortable to talk to him about it.

Okay, so then how do you bring it up? I know that starting this conversation with a dude can be awkward, uncomfortable and completely nerve-wracking. Trust me, I know. I’ve done it a million times and let me just tell you guys something: I am really shy. So if I can talk about this with dudes, anyone can. I promise.

Like I said, this might be a slightly awkward convo – there might be no getting around that. But it’s worth it! Would you rather be lame and sit around waiting to hear what he thinks or would you rather take the initiative and find out where his head is on your own? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

Here’s what to do: first of all, this conversation should happen in person, not through text messages, Facebook chats or even on the phone. Second of all, you should be relatively calm when you bring it up. The worst time to do this is in the middle of a fight or in the middle of sex.

When asking your guy what he wants and if he wants to make the relationship official, you just need to be blunt. There’s no beating around the bush. Just say something like this: “I think we’ve been having a lot of fun these past few weeks and I really like you. I just want to know what you want out of this relationship? Are you interested in getting serious or are you not looking for anything like that?” Yes, ladies, you do have to tell him how you feel.

Another important thing to keep in mind: going into this, you need to know what you want. If you want a relationship, you need to say that. If you don’t, say that too. And don’t agree to things you don’t want. If the guy says he has no interest in being serious, he means it. Don’t be like, “Oh, okay, we can be friends with benefits” and secretly hope he’ll change his mind. He won’t. As much as it sucks, you may need to cut ties with him if things don’t go well. Don’t settle for something you don’t want just to be with him in some way!

Basically, this is a conversation that needs to happen. I know waaaayyyy too many girls who have been hooking up with a guy they really like for months and are too afraid to ask him what he wants. And you know what? These girls aren’t happy. They’re stressed because they have no clue what this dude wants because they’re too scared to say what they want. And you deserve better than that.

So, for lack of a better choice of words, man up and have The Talk with your guy after a few weeks of dating. No matter what happens, I promise that you won’t regret figuring things out on your own.

Go for the person who lights up your life. Truth is, you don’t know how long you have and it makes no sense to do anything but what makes you happy. If you’ve found the person you want to be with for the rest of your life, then be with them every single day.

Also, you may THINK you want to spend the rest of your life with this guy, but that means very little to be perfectly honest. It also could not, but it’s for the best to not put expectations like this on relationships, especially when you aren’t even dating the person yet.

This is a really complicated situation. I personally think if you’re dating someone, and you already think the relationship is going to end then you shouldn’t lead that person on. You should never keep dating someone if you’re not into it. It’s not fair to you or the other person.

As far as moving on with someone else, regardless of if you want to spend the rest of your life with them or not, maybe you should give it a try. I think people who are truly committed in a relationship won’t fall for another person so if you do, maybe it was meant to happen.

I can’t speak to much on wanting to spend the rest of your life with someone because that hasn’t happened to me. I think it’s easy to get caught up in someone and fall in love very quickly, but you should always make sure you really know someone before jumping into the deep end.

One of the most stressful, yet exciting parts of a new relationship as it gets serious is when to say “I love you.” It’s sort of simultaneously horrifying yet relieving once it’s over–and chances are, the guy is going to say “I love you” first. There’s research to prove it!

Studies show that guys, on average, take 88 days to say “I love you” first. Us girls? We move a lot slower. If we’re the first to say “I love you,” it won’t happen for 134 days. Maybe we want to be really, really sure we mean it–and that he won’t think we’re clingers!

The study also notes that guys are a lot more likely to say “I love you” within the first month of meeting someone than we are–39 percent of dudes will do it compared to 23 percent of us.

Even though guys may fall in love quickly, it doesn’t mean that they’re out to physically move so fast. In fact, younger dudes in the study said they were the slowest to hold hands and have a first kiss. Aww! They were also the most likely to commit the soonest–think like, within a week. A week!

The gist of all this? Guys have feelings too. And they seem to reach them before we do. But just because guys take 88 days on average to say “I love you” doesn’t mean you need a stopwatch and a calendar to keep track of their behavior. Every person is different, so every relationship will be different. It may take your dude 88 seconds to realize you’re perfect and wondrous, or it may take 88 hours, 88 months–you get the idea.

Just make sure you’re moving at a pace that feels right for you–and don’t feel pressured to say “I love you” just because he did. It’ll feel a lot better to say it when you mean it!
