I’m 13 and I haven’t had my first kiss yet and I feel kind of different and left out since most of my friends have had theirs. I don’t know whether to go out with my mates and if a guy asks me to kiss him then I would, or to just wait for the right guy?

Ohhh Robyn, do I feel you on this one. Believe it or not, I was 18 when I had my first kiss. EIGHTEEN. And I wasn’t some hideous unlovable goblin. I didn’t have a ton of braces or webbed feet or a hook for a hand – I looked basically like I do now. I was just a late bloomer, I guess. And the kiss, when it finally did happen, it wasn’t exactly the stuff of fairy tales: it was spin the bottle, so it’s not even like he kissed me willingly. Ugh.

The point is: you’ve got five long years until you reach Shallon status. I guarantee you that you will not die a kissing virgin. I guarantee it. Looking back, I was SO STRESSED OUT about my non-kissing status – I wish I’d just relaxed and enjoyed high school without being sooooo focused on Frenching. Ironically, I think my fixation on it actually kept dudes away from me - boys can sense desperation.

And here’s something else to make you feel better: 13-year-old boys are terrible kissers. TERRIBLE. Granted, I haven’t exactly been going around Frenching 13-year-olds recently, but even at 18, my first kiss was sloppy and ridiculous, so clearly, a younger boy would be way worse. So really, you’re not missing much. But I know what you mean – you feel different. Maybe you think girls who have been kissed have this mystical insight into the world, this aura of experience about them that you don’t have.

Ask yourself this: if you were kissed tonight, how would your life be differnt? Probably not much, right? The only thing that would change is your confidence. And the good thing aobut that is that you are in control of how confident appear, no mouth-to-mouth contact needed. For more on being confident, check out this video. A few weeks ago, I was hanging out at my friend’s house and there were a couple of guys over. At one point, I was sitting on my friend’s bed with her and this guy Jake who I had been crushing on for a while. The sexual tension between Jake and I had been crazy all night and I knew something was going to happen.

A few minutes after we started watching a movie, my friend announced that she was going to leave the room for five minutes and that by the time she came back, we better have hooked up. It was kind of embarrassing. We literally just sat there awkwardly for five minutes until she came back in.

I’ve so been there, girl, and the truth is, it’s not nearly as bad as you think. First of all, if you think everyone’s going to notice that you’re alone and think you’re a loser, they won’t. They’re too busy doing their own thing/wondering if they have bad breath/dreading kissing that weird guy they brought to the party. Trust me that there are people in worse situations than you at that party, no matter what! The only way people will think you’re a loser is if you complain and whine about not having a date to kiss. Resist the urge to hide in the bathroom or cry in public. That, my friend, is lame behavior, so just don’t do it.

So, what can you do to get through those awkward, smoocharific 30 seconds after the ball drops? Obviously, you can keep in mind that it really is only 30 seconds (or probably even less!)–it’s not like you’re left out of an hour and a half of activities, girl! Then, if you really think it’s going to be uncomfortable for you (or even painful, if you’ve had a recent breakup), find something else to be doing right at that moment. Volunteer to be the deejay or get a funny noiseblower to blow out at midnight. Whatever it is, make sure it’s something that you think is fun and that you’ll love remembering when you look back on this night. New Year’s is about having fun and starting fresh. For single girls, that can be the most inspiring thing of all.

First off, drink tons of water. If you get dehydrated, your lips will almost definitely get chapped. If they’re already chapped, use a dry wash cloth and gently rub it across your lips, back and forth, to remove some of the dry skin. When you’re done, put a thick balm, like Aquaphor, over your lips. Let that soak in completely before putting on your lipstick.

For the most kissable lips, avoid sticky lip glosses and drying long-wearing lipsticks. Try a cream lipstick instead that has moisturizers in it. Heck, for kissable and delicious lips, try wearing a little strawberry lip balm. Yum!
