If you have a friend who others close to you suspect is a bad influence, chances are she’s a bad friend to boot. Justin Bieber seems like he’s learning all of this the hard way. His pal Lil Twist reportedly not only crashed a bunch of his cars, but also threw a huge party at his mansion while he was on tour overseas–complete with people smoking weed, drinking and probably worse (remember that sizzurp scandal?). All of this is stuff that could have gotten Justin in serious trouble if anything went awry . . . so why does he still hang out with this jerk?

Sometimes it’s hard to tell when someone is a bad friend–even if everyone’s telling you she is, there’s always a chance that your other friends are just jealous of the time you’re spending with a new crew. It happens. And you’re smart and have a mind of your own. But that doesn’t mean you’re not falling victim to a bad friends and a bad influence, because they’re usually pretty sneaky about it. Here’s how to tell if you’re dealing with a genuine jerk or just jealousy from outsiders.

Does your pal mooch off of you?
Borrowing cash when she forgets her wallet on a latte run is a lot different from mooching. Does she always want to go expensive places and somehow always forget cash . . . and then always forgets to pay you back? Just like Lil Twist is always borrowing Bieber’s cars, this girl probably doesn’t have her own life together, so she’s leeching off of yours. She’s not just bad with money, she’s probably also a bad friend.

Does your friend disrespect your property?
If your BFF borrows a shirt and accidentally spills soda on it–dude, stuff happens. But if stuff happens all the time, you need to reassess how much she respects your things, because it’s a reflection of how much she respects you. Is your car a mess whenever you drop her off somewhere? (Or, in the case of Biebs and Twist, does she crash everything you lend her?!) Does she leave trash out when she comes to your house? Does she put her feet up on your mom’s favorite coffee table? The way someone treats your stuff is representative of how they treat you. If your DVDs are always scratched, your hoodies always dirty or your jeans always with an extra hole when she returns them, you may want to reconsider giving her anything–especially any of your time.

Does your friend encourage you to behave badly on the reg?
No one wants a stick in the mud, and let’s be real: Someone judging you constantly is a bad friend in itself. But if someone keeps enabling and encouraging you to do stuff that you know you shouldn’t, she’s a bad influence and definitely a bad friend. If your BFF keeps trying to get you to get drunk on weekends when you’re underage, wants you to cut class with her to go to Dunkin Donuts all the time or, like Lil Twist and Justin Bieber, gives you any other illegal substance that could get you in serious trouble? She’s not a good friend. Only a bad friend would pressure you into something risky and dangerous, because a good friend wants to see you shine. And you can’t really shine if you’re in detention, drunk driving and hurt, or in juvey.

Is your friend rude to your other pals?
Sometimes a bad influence knows they’re a bad influence–and they know that others are on to them. As a result, they’ll try to isolate you from anyone who may point out that they’re being a bad friend to you. If your friend talks smack about your other pals to you, starts drama with them constantly or deliberately excludes them from stuff, she’s probably a bad friend. Obviously, not all of your friends will get along with every single one of your other pals–that’s life, and some people just don’t click well. But if your friend doesn’t click with anybody, there’s probably a reason for that: It’s not them, it’s her.

Does she smother you or make you feel guilty for hanging out with other people?
In keeping with the isolation message from before, if you can’t hang with her one night because you have other stuff to do, does she flip out? Does she tell you how lonely she is and point out that she has no other friends to hang out with? A bad friend doesn’t want you to have a life outside of her because she’s scared you’ll realize she’s a bad influence and you’ll move on with your life without her. A bad friend wants to hold you back so you won’t outgrow her, whereas a good friend wants you to be the best you can be–and understands that sometimes that means not being with her every two seconds.

Does your friend cop your style all the time?
Or, as Justin Bieber would probably put it, “jack your swag?” (We just rolled our eyes so hard, but whatever.) If your pal copies you constantly, it’s not good for either of you. Obviously, most friends have stuff in common–but if she deliberately goes after things that she knows you want–whether it’s that skirt you were saving up for or applying for the same summer job you’re dying to get–she’s a bad friend. And chances are she’s also really insecure, otherwise she’d have her own life. It may seem flattering at first that she thinks so highly of you . . . but trust us, it gets old really fast.

Is it really possible to be friends with an ex without some sort of drama? It looks like Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are trying to put their own relationship demons behind them. After a pretty dramatic month and a split that seemed to be for good in January, Justin was photographed at Selena’ house yesterday.

It’s unlikely that they’d get back together yet again considering all the crazy stuff that’s gone down since they first broke up (including Selena’s smack talking), but they may just be trying to tie up some loose ends to end the animosity and move forward without all that baggage. But it is possible to be friends with an ex–it just takes time and a lot more maturity than some people can handle.

I’m friends with all of my exes except one (mostly because I don’t know where on the planet he is, but I wish him well anyway). But it wasn’t always easy. Here’s how to transition from lovers to exes to friends without any confusion or heartache on either side.

Don’t try to be buddy-buddy right away.
When my ex Matt broke up with me, I was pretty pissed because we’d been BFFs even before we dated–and it made him think we could switch right back over to that without a hitch, even though our split was messy (and by “messy,” I mean “he cheated with a girl who looked like she was 12″). I needed space and time to get over it, and he wouldn’t leave me alone. It made him feel less guilty to check in on me constantly, but it only made me feel worse because the breakup was in my face all the time. After blocking him from social media and my cell for a while–and meeting someone new–I was in a much better place to pal around with him, and now we’re fine. If you did the dumping, give your ex room to breathe–and if he dumped you, he should give you the same courtesy. Someone who truly wants to be your friend is someone who cares about your well-being, and you can’t be well if they’re doing something to hamper your moving on with your life.

Expect some awkwardness.
Being friends with an ex can be tough because even if there’s no animosity there, it’s still a big jump from being friends who made out and maybe saw each another naked. If you feel a little stiff and don’t know what to say around one another, relax. It’s a big adjustment and it may not happen overnight, but you can start with just a neutral icebreaker: “Did you see Spring Breakers? Wasn’t it nuts?”

Steer clear of hot button topics–like your former relationship.
Chances are if you guys split, there was at least some sort of disagreement along the line somewhere. Talking about it when you’re broken up may seem like a way to gain closure and become friends with an ex, but it’s often just exhausting. Keep it light, or else you risk the same drama you thought you escaped by breaking up with the dude.

If you want to be friends with an ex, keep your mutual friends out of your drama.
After a nasty breakup with a drummer with whom I had a lot of mutual friends, they were all sort of divided as to whose “team” they were on. Guess how that turned out? With a really mean email from him (which he later apologized for) after one of those mutual pals got a story twisted and it got back to him. It led to a lot more of that aforementioned awkwardness once we saw one another. We’re fine now, but it would have happened a lot quicker without all that outside interaction.

Don’t try to hide it from your current boyfriend.
Being friends with an ex isn’t a big deal, but if you make it seem like one to your new boo, that’s bad news. If you attempt to hide your friendship from your new BF, it just looks suspicious–because wouldn’t you feel the same way if he did that to your with one of his ex girlfriends? Be honest and open, and discuss what’s appropriate (saying “hey” and catching up when you see each other at parties) and what’s not (going to his place alone to watch a movie). It’ll save you lots of issues later!

Accept that you probably won’t be besties.
Remember my ex Matt from the first tip? We’re not nearly as close as we were before we dated. But we’re good, and that’s enough. You have enough friends, so if you really can’t be friends with an ex without hard feelings, don’t beat yourself up over it. Just let it go and vent to your friends who, you know, didn’t dump you.

Selena Gomez is looking into dating older guys. But it may not end well! | Source: WENN

Selena Gomez is rumored to be totally over Justin Bieber, who was younger than her, and is now looking at dating older guys. One of Sel’s pals said, “Selena is looking to date an older man this time. She finally realized how toxic it was to date a toddler like Justin.”

Selena’s reportedly looking for someone more mature, but we have a warning: dating older guys doesn’t mean dating more mature guys!

Of course, it depends on how much older the guys are. Selena’s 20 now, and the age gap does tend to close as you get older. But if you’re in your teens and thinking of dating older guys, you may want to reconsider. If your idea of dating older guys is dating a senior when you’re a sophomore, that’s a lot different than dating a college sophomore when you’re in eighth grade.

Dating older guys seems exciting and cool–you figure they’re more worldly and responsible, and they can usually drive, which makes things easier (no awkwardly waiting for your mom to drive away before you kiss your dude hello at the movies!)

But here’s the thing: If a guy is a lot older, chances are he’s actually immature. Not sure why? Let me explain.

Back in the day, my best friend was into dating older guys–like, way older. When we were 14, 15, 16 and 17 she dated guys who were 22, 23, 24 and 25, and it never, ever worked out. Not only was it inherently creepy–and depending on where you live, illegal–but these guys were all just idiots. I’d be around them a lot since she’d lie to her parents and say she was hanging out with me when she was going out with them–and technically it’d be true, since she’d drag me along and try setting me up with their equally lame friends.

Without fail, they’d always be impossible to have a normal conversation with (in part because their lives are so different at that age), they’d push her (and often their pals would push me) to go far physically, they wouldn’t have normal or steady jobs and they’d move along really quickly if they didn’t get what they were after–or right after they got it.

The fact is, if you’re dating older guys that are way older to the point that you’d be nervous to introduce them to your dad, chances are they’re going to be the same way. These guys prey on younger girls because they’re too immature for girls and women their own age. I promise–dating older guys probably isn’t as rewarding as giving that guy in your geometry class a shot.

Justin Bieber’s birthday was on Friday, and it apparently wasn’t a real winner of a holiday. Justin went so far as to refer to it as his “worst birthday.” Bummer.

Well, Justin has apparently since amended his declaration of “worst birthday” with an explanation about the issue he had with a British club. However, as far as I am concerned, the details aren’t important. I wasn’t ever really buying that the Biebs was having the “worst” birthday. I mean, the fact that he got to celebrate in another country already means his birthday is miles above others – namely mine.

To put it simply, I do not love my birthday, as things never just seem to go as as planned. All I ever really want from a birthday is a delicious chocolate-chocolate cake. Instead I get things like: a bird trapped in my house and my entire family freaking out (but seriously, you can’t leave out a perfectly good cake with a bird flying overhead). Then there was the year my family was just gone the whole day at my brother’s game. Don’t worry, I got some gifts when they came back – face wash and socks. I’m sure there was a message in there somewhere.

Another year, I was pretty excited because we had a huge play-off field hockey game on my birthday. I could already see some amazing headlines in the sports section of the paper when I scored some game winning goal on my birthday. Instead we got a giant rainstorm which canceled our game, and I instead spent the day in the corner of a library writing a term paper. Nobody wrote a cool article about my eight hours sneezing in old books. We also lost the make-up game the next day.

Probably my worst birthday was when I was in college. I had recently received a bad grade on a paper, and my teacher basically questioned if I even cared about being a writer. He allowed me to re-write it, but of course it was due the morning after my birthday. So much for doing anything fun as I had to re-work this entire thing while also having an existential crisis.

Well, it turns out that even that awful birthday had a silver lining. I was having such a miserable birthday morning, that my mom drove six hours just to come and eat a sandwich with me while I worked on my paper. I know, she’s crazy, but it was a case of true birthday redemption. And I got an A on the paper re-write in case anyone was biting their nails worrying. Writing dreams re-established!

So based on the latest news from Biebs, he was able to still find things to celebrate in the midst of a disaster birthday, as he mentioned he had some friends from home there to celebrate with him. I’m going to guess the whole thing was more glamorous than my eating a sandwich, but hey, it’s all in the name of happy birthday.

So what do you do if you have a bad birthday? From the start, keep expectations reasonable, and if something comes up, just be ready to go with the flow. Feel like you can pick out some of those silver linings, but if it’s real bad, I say chalk it up to a story you can hopefully laugh at in the future and treat yourself to do-over in a few days.

Birthdays are like anniversaries – they’re fun, but in the end, it’s just another day of the year. Even if you don’t have the best celebration on the actual day, as long as you can make some good memories whenever you decide to celebrate the day you were born, that totally counts. Plus, on a do-over day you can get a second round of cake… what’s better than that?!

A 4Chan Twitter hoax called #cutting4Bieber encouraged pics of girls cutting after Justin Bieber was caught smoking weed. | Source: WENN

Girls cutting is never funny, nor is cool, healthy or trendy. Girls cutting for Justin Bieber? Even worse. But that became a trending topic on Twitter this week after he was caught smoking weed . . . but it wasn’t real.

Troll group 4Chan devised a somewhat elaborate Twitter hoax, compiling disturbing images of girls cutting their wrists and posting with the hashtag “#cutting4Bieber.” WTF?! People mistook the hoax as a legit group of Beliebers taking to their inner arms to send Justin Bieber a message–even Miley Cyrus spoke out on the dangers of girls cutting and how this isn’t a matter to be taken lightly.

I’m not saying any topic is off limits jokewise–that’s dumb, and humor is subjective. But actively encouraging anyone else to self-harm, especially a group that can be as impressionable and group-minded as Beliebers can, is both irresponsible, sick, and sort of just . . . evil.

The 4Chan hoax began on the troll group’s message boards, where some sick puppy wrote, ”Tweet a bunch of pics of people cutting themselves and claim we did it because Bieber was smoking weed. See if we can get some little girls to cut themselves.”

See the difference there? They’re actively doing something with the intent for to get girls cutting themselves. That’s their entire purpose for this. It’s much different from making a joke about something, you dig?

A lot of 4Chan users hopped onto the perverse bandwagon, comparing it to their “#bald4Bieber” campaign back in October 2012–that was another Twitter hoax that they hoped would encourage girls to shave their heads in solidarity with Justin Bieber, who they said had cancer (none of that was true, obviously). There’s a big difference between girls shaving their heads–which, if done under false pretenses, is pretty traumatizing in itself but not immediately dangerous–and girls cutting, which could be potentially deadly.

The threads were all taken down shortly after they were posted because–hello?! It’s insane, it’s sadistic, and it’s dangerous. But some damage may have been done: Pictures on Twitter, tumblr, and Facebook showed girls cutting. It’s not clear if those pictures were of legit Beliebers who bought into the #cutting4Bieber campaign or if they were images used by 4Chan in the hoax, but whatever the case: It’s not cool at all. Cutting is serious, and seriously urging anyone else to do so suggests that you have really serious issues, possibly worse ones than actual cutters do (and those are bad).

If you cut yourself, or if you know any girls cutting themselves for any reason, you can get help here. And if you know any girls cutting for Justin Bieber to stop smoking weed or trying to get anyone else to do so, be sure that they get a lot of help.

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber used to spend a ton of time together before they split. A lot of times when you’re single or fresh from a breakup, you have a lot of time on your hands that you may not know what to do with.

Thankfully, Selena’s stopped sulking at Hooter’s (girl, the wings aren’t worth the sexism–we’d sulk too!) and had a better idea: Hanging out with her girls. Sel’s been leaning on her BFF Ashley Tisdale now that she’s flying solo in the dating scene, and you know what? We bet she’s having a lot more fun. Here are our favorite reasons why a girls’ night can totally be more fun than a date–even if there’s no makeout sesh at the end!

1. Speaking of making out: You don’t have to deal with a bad kisser!
Bad breath? Attacking your tonsils? Awkwardly bumping noses or teeth? Smearing your lip gloss on his face? Getting too handsy? You don’t need to worry about any of that nonsense when it’s you and your pals.

2. You can dress for you.
You may be nervous to try red lipstick because some guys say that they don’t dig it, or feel like showing more frills than cleavage. You might want to wear heels without towering over a short dude. With your girlfriends, that stuff doesn’t matter. Heck, they’ll help you primp and take pics of how hot you are–and they won’t give you dirty looks if a guy checks you out!

3. You don’t have to be self-conscious.
When you’re on a date, you may be freaked out by how much you like a guy or just so focused on impressing him that you don’t act like your total awesome self. With your girls, you won’t feel pressured to laugh at a crappy joke (probably because they know how to really make you laugh!) or hold back when you want to talk about something serious or dramatic. You can also dance! That’s what they’re there for.

4. You can do girly things without a grumpy guy checking his watch.
Most guys don’t like trips to the mall, One Direction concerts, or watching chick flicks or ballet, and they might give you crap for it when you want to do those things. Your girls will, at worst, argue over who gets to pick the music in the car on the way there.

5. They’ll be there long after you forget this guy’s name anyway.
Love is awesome, but it comes in a lot of forms. The crush you have today may completely change tomorrow, but the love you have for your girlfriends and vice versa is a lasting bond that can weather almost anything. Take care of them, and let them take care of you!
