When you ask a dude what girls want for Valentine’s Day, their responses are probably going to be different from yours.

A new study said that one in 10 guys think the way to your heart is through jewelry, but it turns out what girls want most for Valentine’s Day is–awww–a handwritten poem or a hug.

A poem or a hug. See how low maintenance we are? Seriously, we are so cute. (Here’s hoping the guys don’t plagiarize their material!) Those are free, so next time a guy complains that Valentine’s Day is super commercial, remind him of that fact. Romance can be free!

About nine percent of dudes also think girls want lingerie for Valentine’s Day, though only about 1 percent of us actually do. (Doesn’t lingerie seem like a sort of selfish Valentine’s Day gift anyway? It’s pretty much as much for him as it is for you!)

Other things guys think girls want for Valentine’s Day: a homemade dinner (adorbs) and uh, for them to take a break from watching sports (dude, seriously?).

But we’re not all that easy to please. About a quarter of us wanted our guy to take us on vacation somewhere fancy or exotic. Good luck doing that with after school job money, ladies!

So, here’s what you can do: if all you want for V-Day is a hug or a poem, show this to your guy… you know, just as a hint. No big deal. Also, we want to know: is this even true? Here’s one thing I think we can all agree on: picking out presents for other people can be really, really hard. Even if you’ve known the person forever, even if you feel like you know everything about them… finding the perfect gift isn’t always easy. Buying presents for people is one of my favorite things to do and even I know this. And for some reason, I find Valentine’s Day gift ideas especially hard.

Why does this make things so much easier? You use the app to create your ultimate gift wish list and then share it with your friends, boyfriend, girlfriend, family, whatever. They can see exactly what you want and pick from the list.To make things even easier, you have the option to buy the items straight from the app itself.

Sounds perfect, right? Right! If you’re unsure of what to buy your boyfriend for Valentine’s Day this year, get him to sign up for this app. He can make a list of things he wants and then you can pick from there. That way, you know you’re getting him something he’s genuinely going to love. On the flip side, if your BF needs a little help in the gifting department, you can make your own list, show it to him and be sure to get something you genuinely love.

The best part about this is that there’s still the surprise element. Sure, your guy or your friends are telling you exactly what they want – but they’re also giving you a bunch of options, meaning they still don’t know exactly what they’re going to get. I love that about this app because I personally hate knowing exactly what I’m going to get just as much as I hate when people know exactly what I’m buying them.

A poll of women in the UK was conducted by BlanX (a teeth-whitening brand), and they found that on average, British women will toss out an average of £26 pounds (which is a bit more than $42) worth of cosmetics products that they received as holiday gifts. That’s a whole lot of waste! We get it, though. What else are you going to do with a gift you can’t ever see yourself using? Well, that’s why we cooked up some super helpful options to keep your unwanted gift from heading to the landfill straightaway. You’re welcome!

Depending on who gave it to you, it may be totally fine to ask about exchanging it. If you’re close with them, it may in fact be better to speak up, as they probably want their gift to be something you’ll actually use anyway. However, if you’re not really close with the gift-giver, it could come off kind of rude to request a switch. In these cases, it’s wasteful to just trash it, but it also doesn’t do you any good for it to just take up space in your closet.

One idea is to do re-gifting party or do a gift swap among your friends. Obviously, don’t re-gift to the original gift-giver (that probably won’t go over well), but I can bet your friends got something that they kind of wish they could trade in. As the saying goes, “One person’s trash, is another person’s treasure” and who knows – maybe one of them has your treasure gift! The worst thing that could happen is you end up with a gift you don’t want, and well, then you’re just back where you started anyway! Plus, making a day about gifts in January could help perk you up from a post-holiday slump.

Donating is another good idea to at least let their be the hope that the gift can find a new life. See what local organizations may be collecting goods like yours, and make a trip to drop off that unwanted gift and hope it’ll find a new home for someone who wants or needs it.

I totally understand getting annoyed at those unwanted gifts crowding up your room, but if there’s any way the gift can go to good use rather than straight into the garbage, I think that’s probably the best plan. Still, fingers crossed for no unwanted gifts next holiday though!

You’re crushing hard
He’s super hot and funny, but you guys aren’t going out or anything, right? Definitely don’t get him anything major or that would be wrapped up with a bow. That will almost definitely freak him out forever and ruin your chances with him. Here’s what to do instead: Hand out candy canes at school with little notes tied to them. Put your phone number on his card with a note saying you hope you can hang out over winter break! Cute, flirty, totally not insane.

You guys just started going out
And by just started going out, I mean you’ve been together for two months or less. This one’s trickier. You guys aren’t written in stone yet (even though I’m sure it feels like you will be one day!) so anything expensive or showy is out of the question. Tell him that instead of exchanging presents this year for Christmas, you’d really rather exchange dates! Have him plan one date for the two of you, and you’ll plan another one. These fun holiday dates will bring you even closer together and give you awesome stuff to look forward to over holiday break.

He’s your newish boyfriend
If you guys have been going out for less than a year, talk to him and tell him you’re making him something for Christmas–then bake him cookies or brownies and write him a super thoughtful card about all the fun things you’ve done together so far. It’s a small but thoughtful gift, and it won’t cost you a ton. Plus, letting him know ahead of time that you’re making something will clue him in that you’re not looking for a diamond ring this year!

He’s been your boyfriend forever
Wow! You’ve been together for over a year?! Holy moly, girl. That’s great. Chances are, you’ve already gone through at least one birthday each and maybe even one holiday, so you might already know what to get him for Christmas . . . but if you don’t, no worries, either. Ask him if there’s anything he’d like for Christmas or Hanukkah–and if he says something crazy like an XBox or new tires for his car, just laugh and say, “No, I meant something I could actually get for you!,” and then tell him you’d like to exchange presents, but don’t want him going overboard. Maybe set a price limit of $10 or $20 and challenge each other to find the most creative gift you can.

Who knew presents could ever be so stressful, right? Now that you’re sorted on what to get him for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or whatever he celebrates, you can get back to the important stuff: Figuring out how many cookies and chocolate Santas you can stuff in your face before December 25th!
