Just because she was single for a while, the world pretty much was like, “Is Kelly Clarkson gay?” She’s not. She recently got engaged to Brandon Blackstock.

The awesomest part about all of this is that Kelly Clarkson isn’t bothered one bit when someone asks if she’s gay.

“People think, ‘Oh, she’s been single for too long.’ That’s kind of an insult to the gay community,” Kel said in a new interview. “Being single doesn’t mean you’re gay. But I’m never insulted by it, obviously!”

In fact, Kelly doesn’t even mind when girls hit on her. “I mean, I get hit on by the hottest girls ever. Oh, my God, if I were a lesbian, I would be so in luck! But it’s not just my thing. I’ve always batted for the boys’ team.”

We freakin’ love Kelly’s attitude. Being single isn’t the end of the world–and it won’t last forever. And just because someone who’s not necessarily your preferred gender thinks you’re cute, it’s not a bad thing. It’s a compliment!

Though the Kelly Clarkson gay rumors don’t bug her, a lot of times the guys who hit on her do–because they’re jerks! “Usually the guys who hit on me are tools,” she griped. “It’s the ones that don’t hit on you that make you like, ‘Why didn’t you ask me out?’ It’s like American Idol auditions: The guys who are the most confident are the horrible ones, and the ones who are good have no confidence at all.”

Remember that next time you think a shy guy is cute but doesn’t make a move. He may well just be be too nervous, and you could miss out on someone awesome. And just because a guy has the balls to talk to you doesn’t mean he’s a catch, either. Use your judgment and you’ll wind up with someone rad, just like Kelly Clarkson did.

And if you’re dealing with gay rumors? Shake ‘em off, girl. There’s nothing wrong with being gay, but there’s no need for people to be in your business. The less big of a deal you make out of it, the faster they’ll forget and move on! It’s a lot better to be single and mistaken for a lesbian than to force yourself into a crappy relationship with someone you don’t even like just to shut people up. One day Mimi came to me in tears. Some people she didn’t know said that EVERYONE assumed that she was a lesbian or bi. They didn’t ask her out of curiosity; they asked to make fun of her.

Mimi asked me if she should start being more “feminine.” She even slept with a random guy to prove that she wasn’t gay! Mimi turned her life UPSIDE DOWN to squash the rumors. It was ridiculous, and something no girl our guy should have to do.

So, if people are spreading rumors that you’re gay, here’s what to do:

1. Realize that it’s not an insult
Even if that jerk means it as one, being gay is not an insult. It might be incorrect (if you are, in fact straight!) but it’s not bad by any means. It’s just different. So there’s no need to get defensive.

That said, we all want to be acknowledged for who we are. I’m from Queens and I don’t want anyone thinking that I’m from Jersey, even though we ‘tawk’ similar. Hopefully, we all know that just like some peeps are black and some are white; some are Chinese, others Guyanese; some like “Glee” and a few weirdos don’t (kidding!); and that some folks are gay and some aren’t. If you’re not, just say, “Nope, I’m into guys.”

2. Laugh it off.
The best way to deal with verbal bullies is laughter. If someone means to insult you by calling you a lesbian or gay slur, smile your most gorgeous smile and say, “Guess you don’t have much going on in your own life to talk about!” Brush ‘em off like dust and walk away.

2. Talk about it.
If the rumors persist, you really might need to address the problem head-on. Ask them why your sexual orientation matters so much to them, and say that you’re bored of it and need them to stop. We all deserve a positive, safe and hate-free environment. If they won’t knock it off, go to a trusted teacher or administrator at school.

3. Ignore them.
Who cares? How fab must you be if other people spend their free time wondering about Y-O-U!

5. And so what if you are??
And if you are gay, you’re gay. No biggie. But that doesn’t mean anyone has the right to “out” you without your permission. If someone’s spreading news about your orientation that you’re not okay with, privately call them out on it and explain why you’re not ready to be public with it.

When we ran into each other years later, Mimi was now a proud and out bisexual woman. Good for her. It was just not a personal truth she was able to embrace when she was younger. Maybe she didn’t even know it herself at the time.

Either way, makes no difference to me as a friend. I love and accept her JUST AS SHE IS.

Honestly? We think not.

Louis and Harry have been battling gay rumors since becoming besties during their X Factor days, and we think it’s kind of absurd. They don’t act any different than normal guy roommates do, but if they stand next to each other in a photo or make a joke, the whole world’s all, “Is he gay?!” And Louis has actually been pretty vocal about how the gay rumors are quite bothersome for him.

“This is a subject that was funny at first but now is actually hard to deal with as I am in a relationship,” Louis griped in a recent interview. We don’t blame him–how tough must it be for poor Eleanor to have the whole world spreading gay rumors about your BF?! Louis added, “Me and Harry are best friends, people look into our every move. It is actually affecting the way me and Harry are in public. We want to joke around but there seems to be a different rumor every time we do anything.”

Not cool! Frankly, it’s not cool to speculate on anyone’s sexuality, because, well, it’s no one’s business but their own and whoever they’re sleeping with. In fact, the constant “Is he gay?!” questioning not just of Louis or Harry, but of anyone, makes it seem like being gay is something that the person in question should be ashamed of or may be hiding. And that’s not true at all–there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being gay. It’s just that not everyone likes their private lives made public, and when you’re a celeb, that’s an especially  difficult compromise to make. A lot of celebs really screw up when confronted with gay rumors and make disparaging comments against the gay community while denying that they’re gay–and we’re happy to see that Louis and Harry are above that. They’re not saying it’s gross or bad to think they’re gay–they’re simply saying it’s incorrect. Well done, boys.

We’re going to take Harry and Louis’ words for it that they’re into ladies–goodness knows Harry’s conquests alone pretty much confirm his own heterosexuality, and Louis and Eleanor are so cute that the gay rumors just seem more and more absurd each time they come up. And let’s be real: The real reason why we’re always asking “Is he gay?” is because we’re just curious (and hopeful!) if we have a shot. It’s not like the gay rumors make them any less adorable, talented, or perfect!

That said, if Harry Styles really wants to quell the gay rumors and prove that he’s straight (not that it’s that important), I have an awesome idea how: Call. Me.
