If you’ve been anywhere near a TV the last few days, you know that two gay marriage issues are going to the Supreme Court this week. The possibility of the Defense of Marriage Act (which says that marriage is only between a man and a woman) and Proposition 8 from California being overturned hopefully will make gay marriage a reality. A ton of celebs are voicing their support of marriage equality, most of whom took to Twitter to show their belief that love is love. Because honestly, if Susie wants to tie the knot with Heather, whose business is it but theirs?

(I also threw in my own thoughts on the subject, because I’m a staunch supporter, but also a jerk.)

Maybe you just logged onto your Facebook and noticed that a lot of your friends were missing. Well, not actually missing, but where their profile picture usually is, there’s now a red and pink equal sign.

My news feed is currently full of them, so if you’re wondering what it means, here’s the scoop!

Changing your profile picture to the red and pink equal sign was started by the Human Rights Campaign, an LGBT advocacy group. The equal sign is their logo, but this red and pink version is a special edition.

But why today? Well, the idea is to show support for the Supreme Court hearings that are currently under way regarding marriage equality. People have been rallying outside the Supreme Court to show their support, but of course not everyone can make it there. Being able to publicly change a profile picture or share the photo is a way to show solidarity and passion for the cause.

The process and cases of the Supreme Court can be kind of confusing, but here’s the gist of what’s been going on today and will continue tomorrow as the Supreme Court hears oral arguments on two cases related to marriage equality.

Today’s discussions (they’re over by now) were about Proposition 8, which banned sex-same marriage in California back in 2008. You may remember this one in particular as a number of celebrities spoke out against Proposition 8.

The second case, which will be brought up tomorrow, is regarding the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Currently, DOMA doesn’t allow couples in same-sex marriages (even where it is legal) to have all the same benefits as those granted to married couples that consist of a man and a woman.

Now, just because the arguments are happening in March, a final decision on these cases isn’t expected until June. Still, in the mean time, this is a big national story. This recap is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to fully understanding these cases and the potential outcomes.

We love Leo's views on gay marriage.

One thing we never get sick of hearing is when celebrities publicly support gay marriage, so we love this quote from Leonardo DiCaprio. In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Leo talked about his frustration with people who obsess over trying to ban gay marriage, saying:

“That’s the most infuriating thing – watching people focus on these things. Meanwhile, there’s the onset of global warming and these incredibly scary and menacing things with the future of our economy and our relationship to the rest of the world. And here we are focusing on this?”

Leo’s costar in his upcoming movie J.Edgar, Clint Eastwood, also expressed his own thoughts on the topic  saying, “These people who are making a big deal about gay marriage? I don’t give a f**k about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?! We’re making a big deal out of things we shouldn’t be making a big deal out of. Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want.”

In the video below by the Human Rights Campaign that is actively supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage in New York, the former First gURL (as we like to call her) proudly declares: “New York is about fairness and equality, and everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love.”

In 2004, B’s dad pushed for a failed constitutional amendment that would have completely banned gay marriage in the US. In 2010, her mom Laura Bush, actually “came out” and said that she supported gay marriage: “I think there are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman… But I also know that when couples are committed to each other and love each other that they ought to have the same sort of rights that everyone has.”

Jason Mraz and fiancee Tristan Prettyman are completely in love, but they refuse to get married until society (or at least the law!) changes its ways.
