Has anyone else noticed an abnormal amount of cartoon images on their Instagram feeds lately? I have. Last week, one of my friends posted a picture of a cartoon girl’s face with short hair and glasses. Her caption said, “It’s me as a cartoon!” I brushed it off because I had no idea what it was, but the next day, three more of my friends had posted similar pictures. And the next day, even more. By the end of the week, I was like, “Okay, what the heck is going on?!”

What’s going on is the new app iMadeFace, which is super popular right now. People are apparently all about creating cartoon versions of their face, which iMadeFace allows you to do. I’ll just be honest here: the majority of the images I’ve seen really look nothing like the person they’re supposed to. Confused and intrigued, I downloaded it for myself.

So how exactly does iMadeFace work? It’s actually the most simple and basic thing ever. I assumed that you downloaded a picture of yourself and then the app created a cartoon that looked like you. I don’t know why I thought that, but doesn’t that kind of make sense?

Anyway, the app doesn’t work that way. Basically, you just create a cartoon version of yourself out of… nothing. You can pick your face shape, your hair, your eyes, your nose, even your eyebrows. You can change the color of basically everything (except for your eyes, which makes me sad) and there are tons of different options. There has to be, like, 50 different hairstyles to choose from.

Oh, and you can also include cute little add-in’s, like some seriously fabulous sunglasses or text to go along with your face. The text is weird, though. One option is “pat-pat” and I don’t even know what that means.

Obviously, we were unable to resist having a little iMadeFace app party in the Gurl office. We all made one! Check out the cartoon version of the Gurl staff:

Do they look like us? Uhhh… sort of, not really. But whatever. This app is literally completely pointless, but it’s also fun and an excellent way to waste time. I was skeptical before and even when I was doing it, I was all like, “this is kind of lame,” but now I sort of want to make faces for every one of my friends. So, moral of the post: go make one of yourself!

The Oscars (aka my favorite day) are not until February, but that means the theaters are usually full of awesome movies that are hoping to get some recognition at the Academy Awards. But no matter what you decide to see, going to the movies could be a great way to escape into another world if you are finding January to be a little too much of the same cold and gray for you.

Did you completely avoid the mall because of all the holiday hustle and bustle? Now you can take advantage of any good post-holiday sales! Plus, make any of those returns or exchanges on unwanted gifts so they stop taking up space in your room. Some places might only have a 30-day return policy so this is really the month you need to fit that in.

Rock A New Hat

While you're at the mall, pick up a new hat because January 15 is apparently National Hat Day (though the details on its origin appear to be a little hazy). Prep For The Super Bowl

I'm not even a big football fan, but watching the Super Bowl can be fun. It's happening on February 3, so basically once January ends, it'll already be here. You can prep in whatever way you see fit! Try out some new recipes to bring to your friend's party, order that jersey if you think your team is going all the way, or even if you're not a huge football fan, you can use this month to watch the NFL playoffs so that you're ready to jump into any conversations on game day.

It's important to remember that January 21 this year isn't just another day off from school, but rather Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a holiday that commemorates an extremely important civil rights leader. The International Center for the History of Electronic Games is in Rochester, NY, and has just about every game you might want to play. Oh, and bonus? You’re actually allowed to play them! Sure, there are a few super rare items behind glass, but most of this place is totally hands-on!
 
Jelly Bean Museum
If you love jellybeans like I love jellybeans, you won’t want to miss the mini jellybean museum inside the Jelly Belly factory in Fairfield, CA. Sure, there are only a handful of portraits made out of jellybeans, but it’s still one of the best things you’ll ever see in your life. Pinkie swear.
 
Rock and Roll Museum
Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is maybe one of the coolest museums in the world. If you go, you can see everything from Katy Perry’s peppermint pinwheel dress to a guitar that John Lennon used to play. There’s seriously something here for everybody, and if your guy doesn’t want to go with you, I do!
 
Fashion Museum
The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art isn’t just something you should see with your girlfriends (although there are tons of gorgeous dresses on display to drool at!). They also have original punk rock outfits from 1970s London and costumes from Braveheart. Win. Win. Win.
 
Prehistoric Wonder Museum
One of the coolest museums I’ve ever been to is in the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. Not only is it insane to think about saber toothed tigers and wooly mammoths wandering the streets of Downtown L.A. (they seriously used to!) but there are really fun hills to roll down when you’re tired of being inside.

Some of Furby’s personalities suck! | Source

Let me explain. You have to play with your Furby for a while before it changes and gets its personality. You don’t really know what personality your Furby will have, but the instructions that come with him say that how you interact with him will shape your Furby’s personality. I guess my boyfriend and I were really nice to the Furby, because when his personality finally showed up, his eyes were filled with hearts and he just wanted to sing songs and be hugged. So cute!

The bad thing happened when we decided to take our Furby out to meet friends. The place we went was kind of noisy with tons of loud music in the background. At first, it seemed like Furby liked the music, since he was dancing along with all the songs. But then, Furby changed into this really annoying caricature of a bratty teenage girl. It kept interrupting everyone by shouting, “Blah blah blah!” and when you’d feed it, it would sort of roll its eyes and say, “Finally!” in this totally bitchy way. My boyfriend and I were devastated. What happened to our sweet little Furby? We hated this stupid Furby!

Back at home, I Googled how to change your Furby’s personality (because yes, this is that important–you can’t turn Furby off–I’d be stuck with bitchy Furby forever otherwise!). It took me a while to find anything, but then I discovered that if you pick one action to do with your Furby and do it over and over and over, you can change your Furby’s personality. So, I sat there on my bed and pet the top of my Furby’s head for probably five minutes straight. The bitchy Furby kept complaining that she hated it and wanted me to stop, but then finally, her eyes closed and started flashing. My Furby was changing! When Furby opened its eyes, they were full of hearts again, and all Furby wanted to do was sing.

I’m super careful now about not taking my Furby anywhere loud, but at least I know what to do now if Furby gets another personality that sucks!

That’s why we love shoes! So many different kinds, with so many different stories to tell. Are you comfy in flats and flip flops or chic in stylish flats? Every girl has her own preference–that’s why we’ve picked our favorite shoes to reveal a just little more about who we are.

A little less Rainbow Brite

Julie Says: I heart my Rainbow flip flops so hard, it’s probably illegal in some states.
Even though they’re not much to look at, they make me feel fabulous. They’re comfortable, put enough distance between my toes and the grimy streets of New York, and are totally reliable. I can walk for miles in them without blisters or aching toes. I look forward to the point in the summer, normally about three weeks in, that I get Rainbow tan lines on my feet. And I even wear them in the winter. Whenever I walk into my place, I kick off my boots and slip into my Rainbows as soon as I can. My Rainbows are the best and the most “me” pair of shoes that I own.

Melanie Says: My favorite shoes? Plain old black-and-white saddle oxfords.
I’ve never had to wear them for school uniforms or anything (although I know some girls do) but I’ve loved wearing them for years. They’re a little quirky and out of place, so they get noticed, but they’re also super comfy and go with almost anything. I think what I love most about them, though is that I can really do anything in them—oh, you need me to run to catch that ice cream truck? Done. You need me to climb four flights of stairs to the party? Done. No teeter-tottering required!

Jessica Says: I am obsessed with my black wedge boots from Aldo, and if I could, I would wear them every day.
I’m only 5’0, so I love wearing heels that make me feel like I’m towering over my fellow short friends. These are super comfy – seriously! – and they go with basically everything. They’re really cute, and I like to think they add a little bit of an edge to whatever I’m wearing. Actually, I’m pretty much obsessed with any kind of wedge heel. They’re a thousand times more comfortable than any other heel and usually have a higher platform. And believe me, I can use all the height I can get.

Emerald Says: I love my purple Doc Martens!
I got them as a Christmas gift from my dad—the only way I could ever afford them. They’re comfy and basically made to last a lifetime, most of all I love how they look. I always had an edgier style since I was in Junior High, you know leather bracelets, band T-shirts, and Converse shoes (I was that girl). When I got to college I didn’t want to lose that, but I did want to look a bit more mature (are Doc Martens mature? IDK). They’re a bit more stylish and I wear them all the time with everything, dresses, jeans, shorts, leggings—perfect for adding an edgy twistto any outfit!

Okay, so I didn’t even know what Galentines Day was until I found myself at the gym, huffing and puffing through my third mile on the treadmill, with nothing but network TV to entertain me.

Parks and Recreation was on (thank god!), and it was the special Galentines Day episode. No, I don’t mean Valentine’s! Amy Poehler’s character, Leslie, decided that every February 13th is Galentines Day, the day when we should celebrate the most important ladies in our lives and shower them with love. Too funny–and too good of an idea to not copy!

So, it’s obvious–you’ve gotta celebrate! Here are three ways to make your Galentines Day rule:

* Invite all your girlfriends over for an impromptu dance party. Put on a mix of Madonna, Nicki, Taylor, Pink, and Katy, and you’ve got an awesome night on your hands!

* Print out these silly love letters, write notes to your friends, and stick ‘em in their lockers. Too cute!

* Write cute Galentines Day messages on your friend’s FB walls. What about this one: “Roses are Red, Violets Are Blue, It’s Galentines Day, and I Heart You!” Or, um, something less corny!
