In what has proven to be one of the most popular “Ask A Guy” posts, I outlined how to tell if a guy likes you – and guess what? Those same techniques he uses to flirt with you will also work to grab his attention!

But obviously, guys are very different from ladies in a myriad of ways, so here are some more specific methods to send the right message to the dude of your dreams:

Get physical
Go ahead: touch! Physical contact is not only a sign that you’re interested — if he feels the same way, it’ll also shoot a mini jolt of romantic electricity through his body. So the next time he makes a funny joke, give him a little tap, squeeze, or even one of those playful punches of yours! (Just don’t knock him out.)

Engage
Ask questions; keep conversation flowing; suggest plans. The younger or less mature the guy, the more direct you might need to be (e.g. “Want to get coffee some time?”), as a lack of experience can translate to a lack of assertiveness. But a more self-assured dude who’s already into you will pick up on even the most subtle of prompts (e.g. “Cool sneakers.”) and flirt right back.

Maintain distance
However, it’s important not to get too aggressive. You need to periodically give your interactions some breathing room, and allow him to make some of the moves. As I’ve pointed out before, guys do value “the chase,” making a “hard-to-get” (though not “impossible-to-get”) girl that much more desirable.

I wouldn’t worry about vague signals such as “biting your lip,” which can be ignored — or worse, misinterpreted (“Did you burn your mouth?”). Eye contact and smiles are great to start with, but guys can be pretty thickheaded, often not as attuned to social or emotional cues as women are. Don’t hesitate to ramp up the obviousness if your crush doesn’t pick up on a simple visual hint!

Obviously, a dude with a girlfriend is off-limits to other girls. But just because you can’t hook up with him, does that mean you can’t enjoy a little flirt sesh with him? Flirting with a guy with a girlfriend might seem like harmless fun to some girls, but to others, it might be totally inappropriate.

We’re sure that most of you have (maybe unintentionally) flirted with a dude who’s already taken. Is it no big deal, or is it totally crossing the line? Melanie Says: No Way Because Of Karma
Flirting with someone who is obviously attached is just not cool. It’s disrespectful to that person’s relationship, puts them in an awkward position (of not wanting to be a jerk to you, but also not wanting to screw up things with their girlfriend or boyfriend), and makes you look a bit desperate (I mean, can’t you find your own cuddle buddy?!). I know girls who do this all the time, and they wonder why people get annoyed at them. I think the answer is pretty obvious!

Emerald Says: No Way Because Of Drama
Flirting is a dangerous game, my friend. You may think it’s just between you and another person but everyone can see it (and if you’re flirting with a guy who is in a relationship in private then you are crossing treacherous waters). The formula is simple, you bat your eyelashes and brush the arm of a dude with a GF, his GF’s BFF sees, she sends a text “OMG You wouldn’t believe what so-and-so just did!” Then all of a sudden your Facebook wall is flooded with a bunch of cuss words and judgments about something you thought was innocent. Avoid the dramz, flirt responsibly.

Jessica Says: It’s Usually Not A Big Deal
I don’t think innocent flirting is that serious, no matter if the dude is married or what. I mean, let’s face it, we all flirt! I’ll admit to flirting with guys who are in relationships, but it’s never been over-the-top or anything touchy-feely. However, I  wouldn’t do it if I knew it was making my own boyfriend super uncomfortable, and I would never do it to my friends’ boyfriends. There’s definitely a fine line, and while I usually don’t think it’s serious, I’ll definitely admit that sometimes it’s wrong.

Julie Says: Go For It
Flirting is just that: flirting. A coy smile or a funny e-mail or even a little shoulder squeeze doesn’t make anyone a cheater. Being a cheater makes you a cheater. So, I feel totally fine being a little flirty with a guy in a relationship…just like I’d be totally fine with my guy flirting with someone. Relationships are about trust, not about avoiding eye contact with anyone who could possibly wink at you. I say flirt away. As long as your intentions are fine and you’re just having fun, it’s really no big deal.

Here’s the tricky thing about flirting: it can seem so innocent to one person and so not innocent to another person. It can be really hard to reach a balance between what’s okay and what’s totally inappropriate, especially when you’re in a relationship. Most of the time, I would say that a little flirting is harmless and natural, and not something that you should be too stressed about. But if it’s over-the-top, happening all the time and making you feel super uncomfortable? You need to speak up.

I don’t know your BF, so I don’t really know exactly why he’s acting like this. If he just has a naturally flirty personality, then he might not even realize what he’s doing could be hurting you. But if he’s flirting with these girls for some other reason, like to get attention from them or to make you jealous, then that’s definitely not cool. Either way, you have a right to be a little jealous. Most people would be in your position.

If this is totally bumming you out, and it sounds like it kind of is, just say something to him. At first, you can try doing it casually, maybe make a joke about it. If that doesn’t spark a conversation, then just tell him you don’t feel comfortable with him flirting with other girls. Explain that it makes you feel bad, and you’d appreciate if he had enough respect for you to not be that way with other girls, especially your BFFs (that’s just awkward!). Try to do this calmly without starting a fight. Like I said before, he might not even realize it’s bothering you. You can put it this way: ask him to think about how he wants you to act around other guys, and that’s the way he should be acting around other girls. Figure out what’s a good balance for you guys and work on it.

Keep in mind that a little flirting is normal for anyone – I’m sure you do it and sometimes don’t even realize it! If you know your BF really cares about you, then don’t stress over him calling another girl hot. Just make sure he doesn’t cross any lines and be honest with him. And if he refuses to stop? Maybe it’s time to move on.
