First dates are not my favorite thing in the world. In fact, they’re one of my least favorite things ever. It’s not that I don’t like dating – I do – it’s just that I’m incredibly awkward and so I feel extremely uncomfortable going out with someone I don’t really know. The whole situation just reeks of potential embarrassment and major fails.

So to explain what first dates are really like (at least in my experience), I’ve put together this list of Tina Fey GIFs. Last night I got invited on a triple blind date with two of my friends. I didn’t really want to go because it was a pretty long day with work and bra fittings and all. And I’m not a fan of the whole blind date thing. But my friend needed me, so I figured I could at least do it as a favor.

I thought we were all being set up, but one of the girls is already dating someone so she brought her almost-BF. My other friend met a guy using Tinder so he was bringing his friend along for me. Weird, I know. BUT YOLO OR WHATEVER.

Anyway. It was strange, and it did not go well. I never want to go on a blind date ever again for the rest of eternity.

Here’s how the night went:

My friends convinced me to go, and I was basically like

Dating today is so complicated. Not only do you have to figure out how to interact with the person you’re crushing on in-person, but you also have to figure out how to best interact with them on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, texting… ugh. Remember when life was simple and the only way you could talk to your crush was in-person, on AIM or on the phone? I do and I sort of miss it.

There are a lot of ways that dating in the 1990s and early 2000′s was different from dating today. I mean, for one thing, there was no Facebook, so you can only imagine how that affected things. I put together 15 ways dating back then was different from dating now. Check it out and let me know if I missed anything in the comments.

You talked to your crush/BF on AIM all night instead of texting or Facebook messaging them all night.

Because Facebook wasn’t around yet and if texting was, you probably weren’t allowed to have a cell phone. (Those were for adults)

You had to wait for your parents to get off the phone so that you could get on the Internet to talk to your hunny (or vice versa).

Oh, dial-up. I don’t miss you.

You had to deal with the total embarrassment of leaving voicemails on landlines.

10 Do’s And Don’ts Of First Date Conversations

First dates can be seriously awkward and also incredibly nerve-wrecking. I know that, for me, the thing I stress over the most when it comes to a date with someone new is what we’re going to talk about. Having a conversation with a guy I barely know sounds terrifying to me and I’m sure I’m not alone. Sure, I want to look good – but it’s not all about that. It doesn’t matter how good you look if you come off as boring and stupid, you know?

Apparently, dudes feel the same way. In a recent survey, guys said that the thing that makes them the most nervous about first dates are first date conversations. I guess it’s kind of comforting to know that we’re all in the same boat, but honestly, it doesn’t make me feel too much better. So to help out those of you who feel the same way I do, here are 10 do’s and don’ts of first date conversations: what to talk about and what you should definitely avoid.

Do Talk About: Pets

Pets are an easy and, usually, fun topic to bring up on a date. People either love or hate animals, so either the dude will be thrilled to talk about his dog BFF from home or he'll love the chance to rant about how he's not into pets. Either way, this is usually pretty safe.

Don't Talk About: Family Stuff

Something you may not want to bring up on a first date when you guys are just getting to know each other? Family stuff. Families can be complicated and who knows what goes on behind closed doors at his house, you know? You don't know if he doesn't get along with his family, if one of them recently passed away or anything like that. The point is, this can easily turn into a pretty heavy topic and first date convos usually shouldn't be like that.

Do Talk About: Sports

Feel free to bring up sports - but only if you're into them. Don't pretend to love football if really you don't know anything about it. That won't impress him. See what he's into or not into... and it's okay if you guys get into a friendly debate about it. Guys dig confidence and that means they like girls who aren't afraid to express their opinions.

Ugh. Politics. I'm all for a smart, news-centered political discussion, but a first date isn't really the place for that. Any talk about politics can get ugly fast so I wouldn't even touch it until you get to know the guy better.

Food! Everyone loves food! This may sound kind of boring, but to make it a little more interesting, you can talk about your favorite restaurant or place to get ice cream. I love a good gossip sesh as much as anyone else, but looking catty and superficial isn't great on a first date when you're trying to make a good impression. Guys can easily get turned off by a girl who only has mean things to say about other people. So play nice!

You shared your life with someone, and that can be really hard to let go of. No matter what, it seems like everything after a breakup reminds you of your ex. I still think about some of my exes when a certain song comes on or when I watch a specific movie.

But you don’t want to think about your ex all the time. You want to heal and move on instead of constantly thinking about someone that you’re not with anymore. It’s hard to do, but we’re here to help you through it!

Or you could wait for her to realize and keep it to yourself, but then your have to watch her being played with this jerk. However, if you are really good friends and she knows her bf is a bit of a two timer and they have a weak relationship she will probably believe you. Maybe try to record an incident with him on your phone for evidence. Whenever you are alone with him try to secretly record it on your phone on voice recorder or something, then you can catch him out and your friend will know and he can’t deny it.

Alrighty, this is some real stuff. Let’s pause for a minute and pretend that her boyfriend kissed someone else instead of you. You would tell her, right? I hope you would. I would want to know ASAP if my boyfriend cheated on me. And I’d much rather hear it from my friend instead of someone random.

Now, let’s pick back up. The fact that he even flirted with his girlfriend’s friend isn’t okay. The fact that he made a move is even worse. You have to tell her as soon as humanly possible. Yes, she’s going to be upset. Yes, she might even get mad at you because she doesn’t want it to be true. She doesn’t want to think that her boyfriend kissed her friend or anyone else. She might even blame you for it.

If you don’t tell her, there are several things that could happen. He’ll tell her, and you’ve betrayed her by not saying anything. Someone else will tell her, and you’ve still betrayed her by not saying anything. He’ll keep making moves on you and other girls and will hurt your friend regardless. She needs to know now so she knows what a skeeze her boyfriend is.

How Do You Get A Guy To Like You? By… Manipulating Him?

How do you get a guy to like you? Manipulation! At least, that’s what one nut job is trying to sell us. A hypnotist has a new book out that explains how to leave messages, hints and manipulative signs to get a guy to like you.

Some of the stuff sounds innocent enough: Find out his likes and dislikes, make plans for the future. Fair enough. But the author takes it a step further: When he suggests we make plans with a guy after a great date, he suggest we phrase it a certain way: “We’ll go out again, right?” Doesn’t that sound a little . . . meek? Passive? If you like him, isn’t it better to be direct instead of passive aggressive?

The hypnotist also suggests some things that annoy me even more: Lurk him online. (Right, because that never gives people the wrong idea.) Leave magazines with relationship or wedding themes lying around for him to see to plant seeds in his head. (And, realistically, to freak him out and send him running for the hills.) He also suggests that you only hang out with other couples. (What, single friends aren’t cool anymore? Psh.) Most annoying? He wants you to start adopting the guy’s style, because apparently it’s impossible that this dude would like you for who you are. That bothers me more than anything.

Listen, manipulation is great for getting you what you want, and it works wonderfully for advertising and media companies, but manipulation of people’s emotions and lives? Why is anyone promoting this at all? And think of it this way: If the genders were reversed and a guy was using manipulation to get a girl to like him, wouldn’t this sound somehow twice as creepy?

If a guy likes you, he likes you. If he doesn’t like you, dressing like his twin and asking passive aggressive questions about the future isn’t going to make him like you. It’s going to make him think you’re nuts and make you feel like less than yourself, which is absurd, because you, my dear, are awesome. And honestly–why would you want to be with someone who doesn’t want to be with you? Why would you want to waste your time and energy on forcing someone to feel something they don’t? It’s exhausting and no one is going to be happy at the end of it: He’s gonna feel duped and you’re gonna feel pressure to act like someone you’re not.

Instead of dwelling on how to get a guy to like you, focus on how you feel about him once you get to know him better. This manipulation isn’t just manipulating the guy, but also your own emotions: You may be so intent on “winning” this guy that you fail to realize whether or not he’s even capable of making you happy or compatible with you at all.

How do you get a guy to like you? By being yourself. If the guy is worth his salt, that will be enough.
