Large breasts aren’t always the blessing that the media fools people into believing they are. Washington state teenager Britanny Minder knows this intimately, because her breasts kept her out of prom.

Minder found her dream dress, a strapless purple number designed for larger busts, only to be denied entry to her prom because of her visible cleavage.

According to the school’s dress code, strapless dresses are allowed as long as cleavage, midriff, and lower back were covered. Minder and her family don’t have a problem with the dress code, but they feel as if Minder was treated unfairly due to her physique. Minder told CNN that, due to her large breasts, she has little control over her ample cleavage. She was forced to wear a shawl before entering the prom, but only stayed for an hour due to how self-conscious she felt about the ordeal.

“An important night of in life was ruined,” said Minder. “And there’s no way I can gain that experience back.”

I know what some of you are thinking: She didn’t have to wear a strapless dress. She must have known that she was going against the dress code. Maybe she could have worn a dress that covered her cleavage.

And you’re right, she could have worn a different dress, she likely knew that the school code forbade cleavage, and she didn’t have to wear a strapless dress. As a woman with a large bust, I avoid anything strapless because I know that it doesn’t exactly agree with my chest. So, okay, I understand the criticisms thrown at Minder’s decision.

However, I think that this debacle presents a much bigger discussion. Cleavage is generally believed to be deliberately arousing, but some of us with larger breasts really can’t help how much we fill out a dress. Sure, we can wear something more conservative, but it is ridiculous that we have to always defer to more safe style options because something we can’t control is considered inherently sexual. For large breasted women, unless we’re going to start wearing turtle necks and straight jackets to every formal event, dresses are usually going to show at least a little cleavage. But our cleavage is never seen as tasteful or natural; it is always seen as a deliberate tool of teasing and enticement.

Newsflash: People with large breasts aren’t always using their cleavage as a bat signal for sexy thoughts. It just happens, it’s just there, it just is. Women with large breasts shouldn’t always have to worry about being a living, breathing offense to puritanical sensibility.

This is why so many women and girls feel so ashamed and self conscious about their large breasts: They’re socialized to feel the brunt and the blame of other people’s sexual objectification of their bodies. Whether it’s disgusting men slobbering over them in public, or walking the hallways of a school, we’re treated as if we’re walking distractions, living and breathing violations of dress codes and morality.

But our breasts are not simply objects of desire, and until whoever makes these ridiculous school dress codes figures that out, this won’t be the last time that a young woman’s body is treated as if it is inherently inappropriate.

Why do men like breasts? Or, more specifically, why do some guys like big boobs more than smaller boobs? I think it’s safe to say that we’re all pretty curious to know exactly what it is about boobs (which are really just pockets of fat) that drive some men crazy.

But can there ever really be a clear answer to the question of why some men like bigger boobs? After all, isn’t everyone attracted to different things? Is it really true that certain groups of people are attracted to certain things? Basically, is there really a science behind physical attraction? According to a few different studies, yes – Psychology Today recently posted an article about why certain men like bigger breasts and the results are kind of surprising.

So, why are some dudes really into D-cups while some dudes dig A-cups? According to one study, men who don’t have a lot of money are more into big boobs while men who are more financially secure like smaller boobs.  Doesn’t it sound crazy that the amount of money you have could influence what size breasts you like? Um, yeah, it does.

But apparently, one view on female breast size is that it acts as “a signal of fat reserves, which in turn advertises access to resources.” Psychologists tested out this idea by asking men from different socioeconomic backgrounds what size breasts they found more attractive. Sure enough, the idea seemed to be true – the men with less material goods liked bigger breasts more. Why? It sounds like they associate large breasts with more money and resources. Since poorer men are most likely striving for more money, it would make sense that they would like something that symbolizes more money. How do breasts symbolize “more resources?” Honestly, I couldn’t tell you.

The next study found that guys who were hungry were more like to find big boobs more desirable, while guys who were not hungry were more into small boobs. Completely random, right? Apparently this study was based on the evolutionary perspective that breasts are a sign of a woman’s ability to have and take care of kids. To tell you the truth, I’m still pretty confused as to how that relates to being hungry or not hungry, but okay. I’ll go with it.

Lastly, researchers tested out this theory even more and discovered that guys who really want to be fathers at some point like bigger breasts, while guys who don’t really want to be dads liked smaller breasts. So, it looks like that evolutionary theory about boobs rings true – it seems that some men do associate larger breasts with a woman’s ability to be a good mom.

So, to recap: guys who like big breasts generally do not have a lot of money, want to be fathers one day and are hungry. Men who like small breasts have a good amount of money, don’t want to be a dad and are not hungry.

Does this sound completely ridiculous to anyone else except me? While I sort of get the science behind each of these ideas, at the same time, I’m having a hard time believing these results. And that’s not only because these studies were pretty small (the dad one only looked at 67 men), but also because it just sounds silly to me. How does hungry and money affect what kind of boobs you like? More importantly, why do we need to know why some dudes like big boobs? Maybe some guys just like the way they feel! Maybe it depends on the girl. I don’t know, I just think there are a lot of other factors to consider.

That being said, these findings were pretty interesting. And so, I want to know what you think about them: do they sound legit or ridic?

A lot of girls think that with bigger boobs comes endless possibilities. Sure, those curves fill out certain styles of clothing differently than A-cups do, but trust me – big boobs do not make everything better. There are certain items of clothing I wish I could wear, but I can’t because they just don’t fit my breasts right. Button-Down Shirts

I think I have been on a never-ending quest to find the perfect button-down shirt since I was born. I'M NOT BEING DRAMATIC. I love, love, love the look of any button-down, but unfortunately, I have yet to find one that doesn't pop open in the middle of a group of strangers to reveal my bra. That happens if I can even manage to button it up to begin with - usually I have to wear a tank underneath, which is like, ugh.

Sports Bras

Any fellow large-chested woman will agree with me - sports bras are the worst. I've spent one too many workouts squishing my boobs into two different sports bras just so they don't painfully move around while I exercise... because that HURTS. It's so hard to find a good sports bra. Some of them squish you way too much (that's not support, it's just squishing) and some of them claim they're supportive, but... they're not. It's a lie. Personally, I enjoy high-impact Under Armour sports bras. Just a friendly tip.

I once heard someone say she envied girls with large breasts because we could pull of strapless things better. LOL NO. Strapless things, whether it's a bra or a dress or a top, make me miserable and I wish I were kidding. Tattoo trends are fleeting–remember when everyone had Chinese symbols or tribal bands? But um, there’s a new tattoo trend that’s pretty baffling: nipple tattoos. We’re talking about tattoos of nipples … on your nipples.

The trend, adorably (or grossly) called “tittooing,” is for women who want “darker, more defined” and “perfect nipples.” Which is weird, because ask anyone–especially a guy–and they’ll tell you, pretty much all nipples are perfect, joyous and wonderful things to behold.

Here’s when nipple tattoos make a little bit of sense: They were originally designed for women who underwent mastectomies for breast cancer. That I can get behind. But for the rest of us? Dude, WTF?

Aside from the pain involved–these things do not tickle–nipple tattoos aren’t even permanent. These last from 12 to 18 months before they start fading and you have to get them redone or at least touched up. What’s more, it’s more painful for women who haven’t had surgery, because your nipples are more sensitive. And if you ever get pregnant? That nipple tattoo is going to last even less time or possibly distort because of the changes in your bod and your boobs.

If for some bizarre and likely misguided reason you still want to go through a nipple tattoo (or “areola restoration,” as the euphemism goes), docs are urging you to go to a medical tattooist and not the random smoky shop down the street because of the risks involved.

But girls, really: Your nipples are perfect the way they are. Seriously. Just ask your boyfriend.

Sagging breasts can be a bummer, but you figure they can be corrected–or at least hidden–by a good bra, right? Well, we thought so, but it turns out, bras may make sagging breasts sag even more!

A scientist conducted 15 years of research on the effect that wearing a bra has on sagging breasts, and the findings are sort of mortifying. He studied 130 women, all with different sized busts, to come up with his theory that wearing a bra actually can stop breast tissue from growing.

In the study, the women were all told not to wear a bra for various periods of time–some for a few months, others for a few years. During that time, the ladies were regularly measured and questioned about whether they felt discomfort or had back pain–and most of the gals and their girls felt fine without an over-the-shoulder boulder holder.

Some women reported that within the first three months they were a little uncomfortable, and some had slight back aches, but that they went away within that time, and later the girls felt fine–even when they played sports!

The researcher explained, “The decision not to a wear a bra appeals to women in terms of comfort and aesthetics. Contrary to popular belief, the breast does not fall, but tightens and lifts, and the quality of the skin improves.”

Still, you may not want to chuck your Victoria’s Secret garb just yet. First off, genetics play a big role in sagging breasts vs. perky ones, and so does your actual bust size. And other studies have shown that anyone over a B cup probably won’t be too comfortable with all the movement that going braless offers, even just walking down the street can make your boobs jiggle up to 33 percent more than they do when you’re standing still. If you’re busty, that can actually be really uncomfortable. And another doc explained that if your breasts aren’t supported, it can negatively affect your posture and make your shoulders rounded, which leads to backaches later.

Wearing a bra really just comes down to what you’re comfortable with physically (how much you move) and emotionally (you may feel exposed without one, especially when it’s cold). Plus, even if sagging breasts aren’t an issue for you yet, with the right bra, they probably won’t ever be–at least until you take it off.

Do your nipples go inward? If so, don’t freak out – you’re not alone! Here’s some info on why you have inward nipples and what you can do to possibly fix them.

ChickRx expert, Dr. Trina Read, Sex Coach and Doctorate of Human Sexuality, says: 

Although it’s not very common for nipples to go inwards, that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you. It’s how you were biologically made and so, therefore, you are normal and not weird.

A common question girls have about inward nipples is whether or not guys will still be attracted to them. As with any other physical trait, it really depends on the guy and what he likes. However, the vast majority of men are simply thrilled to see naked breasts regardless of what your nipples look like. Plus, if he’s going to be a jerk because of how you look, then he doesn’t deserve to see your nipples anyway!

As for fixing your inward nipples, it depends on how and/or why your nipple sits inward. Getting your nipple to stick out might be as simple as having a partner suck on it (oh, la la!). If that doesn’t work, you might want to speak to your doctor about your nipple options. There are some relatively easy procedures he/she may be able to do that will fix your nipples.
