Word Of The Day: “Tupperware” (Hint: It’s About Boys)

Today’s word of the day isn’t what you think it is at all. When you hear Tupperware, you probably think of those plastic containers with matching lids that your mom and grandma have stacked in their cupboards to put leftovers and other stuff in. But that’s so not what I’m talking about at all.

Before I can tell you the true meaning of this word, ladies, I have to take you on a little walk down my own personal romantic history lane. Several years ago, I dated this guy who was really attractive. Thing is, he had very little else going for him, and he was super high maintenance in an insane way. Like, way more than I could ever be. Here’s an example: We were invited over to a friend’s house for dinner, which was really exciting, because um, HELLO friends and free delicious food cooked just for us? Yes and yes! My boyfriend and I were both vegetarian, but our friend who was cooking knew this and said he’d make a vegetarian dinner. Super.

Except NOT so super, because my boyfriend insisted on bringing his own food. Seriously. He brought his own dinner in a Tupperware to someone else’s house when they were cooking us a special meal. When I asked about the Tupperware, he insisted that we “couldn’t trust” that the food would really be vegetarian (WTF?!) and that he just liked to be self-sufficient. More like self-stupid!

He and I broke up shortly after, but my friends and I still refer to him and any other super high-maintenance weirdos as “Tupperware.” So like, if my friends and I are planning a big group trip to the movies, and one of my girls’ boyfriends is like, “Oh, I don’t want to go to that theater because blahblahblah, let’s go to this one because blahblahblah,” and it’s obviously for no reason other than he’s cray? He’s a Tupperware. And you know what’s in a Tupperware, ladies? That’s right. Usually old food that you don’t want anymore.

If you ever realize that you’re dating a Tupperware, run away. Fast.

You Can’t Be A Princess . . . Or Spider-Man Either

The show What Would You Do? did something pretty cool that turned out to be really heartbreaking. The series plants controversial scenarios in public places to see how regular people will react. In this episode they used two actors to play a boy and his mom in a Halloween store. The boy wanted to be a princess, but the mom wouldn’t allow it.

The customers’ responses were upsetting to say the least. One mom said, “I have three boys. My older one did that. I told him no.” Customer after customer sided with the mom. Each saying it was wrong for a boy to want to dress like a girl and that it’s a “phase” that they need to put a stop to. No one says the word “gay” but it’s pretty clear that there is a fear that this could mean that he is.

When no one sides with the boy the show did something else pretty cool. They wanted to see if this was a double standard. People seem to believe it’s wrong for a boy to want to look like a girl, but would they feel the same about a girl who wants to be Spider-Man? The answer is just as upsetting as the first scenario. No one seemed to think it was OK for the girl to be Spider-Man! Customers continued to tell the girl she would look better as a princess.

Why not just give her an apron and broom and tell her to be a housewife? What is the point in breaking the heart of someone so young? When you’re young your costume is so important to you because it’s a part of how you choose to shape your identity. Every Halloween I had to be something scary. I never wanted to be anything “pretty” because I just wasn’t into it. When I was nine years old we went to the costume store too late to get any of the good stuff so I had to be a BRIDE. I was so uncomfortable in this big white dress I didn’t speak to anyone on my favorite holiday. Is there anything wrong with a big white dress? No. But it didn’t feel like who I was and I knew that even at nine years old.

Telling a kid they are wrong for harmlessly expressing themselves is awful. I think my worst fear as kid was the possibility that if my parents found out what I was really like they may not love me anymore. A lot of my friends felt the same way.

Only one woman sided with the girl and it was awesome. She tells the girl’s mother, “What encourages her to want to be Spider-Man is that she likes the idea of saving people. It shows that she wants be a strong woman.” The little girl asks, “Do you think I should feel bad about liking boy stuff?” The woman replies, “You’re worried about if people will accept you. But if you’re strong and you know who you are, people will respect you for it. There are more girls like you.”

The host of the show then intervened and told the open-minded woman it was all an act. The woman said, “You could tell that she was so worried about her kid being gay even though she didn’t literally say the word gay. Either way they’re still your child and there are lots of people who will turn their backs on them because of their sexual orientation and that’s something that breaks my heart.”

While creeping on AskMen.com I found this crazy interesting article about the male perspective on women’s bodies by writer Ian Lang. When any guy is chiming in on the “how women should look debate,” it’s only natural to be skeptical, and I was. Especially when the title of the article is, “Learning To Deal With Real Women.” Umm, what exactly is a real woman? What makes one woman more real than another?

What Lang is actually pointing out is the difference between fantasy and reality. He says, “We’re supposed to decry the entertainment industry’s penchant for models with unrealistic proportions, but we can’t deny that Marisa Miller is truly some grade-A boner material. The conundrum for us men is how to negotiate between reality and the media’s fantasies.”

Meaning, guys know that those Photoshopped models with genetics only .0001 percent of the population have cannot represent all women (or most), but they are still super duper hot. Which is true. They’re a special part of the human race who get glammed up to look even more pleasing than they already naturally do. Who isn’t attracted to Kate Upton or Gisele Bundchen? Models are meant to catch the eyes of both men and women. But what Lang is really talking about is how do guys deal with the fact that every single girl they see in TV, movies, porn and magazines is made to appear perfect when real women are not? If every signal and sign is telling you that all girls are supposed to be epically flawless how would a guy know to expect something else? And when he does see something else in a woman, how should he react? If he is made to believe all girls are perfect and sees one that is not, it’s only rational that he thinks she’s a freak, right?

Lang says, ” . . . first glimpses of bona fide nakedness . . . the results were . . . disappointing? I shouldn’t say that, because, let’s be honest, you were stoked. But, still, some things were apparent: not every girl has gigantic, perfect breasts, and the breasts they do have don’t usually stay perfectly heaped up like a couple of airbags. It turns out that, just like us, girls have moles, zits and blemishes. Making out in the back of a car or other teenage-approved locations often led to interesting positions that created lumps and rolls in even the fittest of bodies. And, boy, were we ever wrong about that “vagina” thing. We were all like, “OH GOD, WHAT IS THAT? There’s hair and lots of skin and what exactly am I supposed to be doing with it?”

When I first read this I was sort of offended. You think my body is gross? What’s so gross about some hair and a mole? Then I remembered . . . that’s kind of the whole point of the fight for better body image. All bodies are gross. As he says, girls are “just like us [guys]“, we all have flawed bodies. (The first time I saw a penis I was like gasp. LOL!) All of our bodies excrete waste, don’t look great in certain lighting, are tummies fold, our skin is scarred, we’re all human and no one is exempt from that. But that doesn’t mean we can’t turn each other on and be attractive to ourselves and others. Actors and models have special genes, but they also have budgets that are tens of thousands of dollars spent on the right makeup, clothing, photographers, setting, and technologies to capture the one single moment they look absolutely stunning. Bodies in real life, completely exposed, and in motion can never look so perfect all the time.

It’s not that our bodies aren’t beautiful the way they are. Yes, they are. It’s that the pressure to be perfect all the time is what makes many women deeply sad and it’s what confuses men into thinking that we’re supposed to be immaculate at every moment. Real women and men are not flawless. It’s really up to both genders to learn the difference between what is a fictional fantasy and an equally attractive reality.

Is Online Porn Ruining Your Boyfriend’s Life?!

If a guy has a pulse and access to any kind of electronics, chances are he’s at least taken a passing glance at online porn. Some guys may even make online a porn a habit. The fact is, online porn is so readily available that most guys engage in it at least once in a while, and it’s harmless in most cases–but not all. Could online porn actually be ruining your boyfriend’s life?

Maybe, says one study. But it’s not just online porn that may be the culprit, as experts are looking to video games too. Basically, the more time a guy spends in time of a screen, whether it be for Diablo III or online porn, the less social skills he may have in real life. More guys than ever are flunking in school and becoming increasingly awkward to be around and have trouble talking to girls. Yikes!

The video game-rooted problems seem to be mainly about guys trying to rule the world without talking to anyone, because apparently they don’t listen to enough Beyonce (because seriously, girls–we run this mutha). When they’re kicking ass in an RPG, there’s little risk of rejection–unlike when they try to talk to that cute girl (you!) at a party.

That problem carries over into the issues that online porn presents. The prevalence of online porn can be explained a few ways: For one, it’s a lot more easily accessible than it used to be, back when people had to actually go out and buy it (and risk embarrassment and a higher chance of their parents catching them). Another issue online porn poses is immediate gratification–that is, a guy can see a girl naked with a click of a mouse, so why should he bother getting to know a real girl and connecting with her? Because let’s be real, it takes a lot less time to click over to SteamySnatch.com than it does to woo you.

The younger a guy gets into online porn, the more potential for damage to his social life becomes. If a dude with no sexual or dating experience only learns about women from online porn, he may have a tough time forming actual romantic or sexual relationships later on because he has no idea how they work.

Unfortunately, the same experts who pointed this out also pointed out that online porn is never gonna go away–and at best we can hope that producers tweak it to make it more romantic.

Here’s hoping, because most of us aren’t stripping for our pizza deliverymen. I mean, unless he’s really hot. (I kid, I kid!)
