Bad sex can be a tricky, elusive thing. Most of us figure that in the beginning of a relationship, you’d be most likely to have bad sex because you’re not too familiar with what your partner is into, there’s the inherent awkwardness, stuff like that. But it turns out, bad sex can turn into good sex over time … and then back into bad sex if you’ve gotten too comfortable and too close with your partner. Say what?

It turns out that the same friendship that makes for great relationships can make for a bad sex life. Here’s how: When you’re too intimate with someone, that animal-like lust can deteriorate over time. You begin to stop seeing them as an individual and more like an extension of yourself. Think of it this way: If your boyfriend says you’re his best friend, on the surface, that seems rad, right? But think about it a little more. His other best friends are probably guys who he views like brothers. He wouldn’t have sex with his brothers (we hope). You see where this going?

Experts recommend that if you’re deeply in love but having bad sex to actually embrace your differences with your partner and go out and do your own things. When there’s a challenge presented–even a tiny one–your libido can be sparked. Think of how dudes like the thrill of the chase–when they already have you, they may get bored, and that doesn’t bode well in the boudoir. What’s more, chasing after your own interests will improve your confidence, which will in turn improve your sex life, because when you’re more confident, you’re more likely to communicate about what you want. And that’s hot!

The experts also note that if you’re having bad sex, it may also just be bland sex. If you’re just going through the motions and what used to be good sex becomes bad sex, you may not be able to get excited anymore unless to try something new and switch it up. And they also recommend that you do it ASAP if you think you’re having bad sex–otherwise one or both of you may be over the relationship as a whole. And let’s be real–it would suck to lose your best friend over some bad sex!

It doesn’t have to be a huge confession of your feelings, just a funny little something to get him to giggle. Even those One Direction Valentines you’re sending your girlfriends will work! A laugh is a great way to break the ice.

Crush Idea: Be bold and ask your crush to hang out! It doesn’t have to be an official date, just something easy like afterschool homework help or a walk through his neighborhood. You’re just trying to get the ball rolling, not sweep him off his feet with a romantic dinner for two followed by a Broadway show. No big deal!

Girlfriend Idea: Pick out three hilarious comedy flicks and invite over your best friends for a night of laughs, snacks and hanging out.

Girlfriend Idea: Host a big dirty Santa gift swap with your girlfriends. Everyone needs to bring a gift that cost $10 or under and you’ll spend the night opening and stealing each other’s presents. So fun and you’ll end up with a special little gift.

His Band Breaks Up

Whether it is an actual band or simply his band of friends, the fact is that people drift apart for a whole host of reasons. There can be a lot to balance in life between family, school, work, sports, and yes relationships, but it also takes effort on the guy involved to make things work despite all those different areas requiring his focus. It's not your fault if he has chosen to place emphasis on different areas of his life and maybe that has impacted his friendships.

He Has A Bad Game

Every athlete has bad games. Okay, so maybe you being there makes him a little nervous, but considering he probably has nerves that also his whole family, the rest of the school and the local news is there, it's not fair to blame you when you've just been trying to be supportive. A part of sports is being able to block all that stuff out, and while that's really tough and it can be tempting to blame all those outside factors, he's got to know that you really had nothing to do with how the game went.

He's Super Tired

If he knows he needs 10 hours of sleep to function the next day, he shouldn't plan on chatting with you until midnight. It's nice to have those late-night talks with a significant other, but there's also some personal responsibility to make the decision to stick with bedtime and be done with the phone or Internet. Conversations are a two-way street, so to put all the blame on you for his night-owl habits just isn't fair.

He Was Late For Curfew

He knows what the rules are in his household, and it's his responsibility to adhere to them. It's not fair for him to act like seeing a movie that cuts it close to curfew is all okay, only to take it out on you when he's late getting home and now might be getting grounded.

He Has A Fight With His Parents

In addition to curfew rules, disagreements with parents can happen for a whole bunch of reasons, and maybe they don't see eye-to-eye when it comes to dating in general. That's a family situation, and just because you may be the girlfriend, that doesn't make it your fault when there's some kind of disagreement between parents and son at home.

He Got A Bad Grade

If he insists on studying with you, but seems more interested in flirting while you're busy cracking the books, that's not your fault at all. If he knows he won't really focus around you and won't be productive, then he should also know it could impact his grades. If he isn't putting the work in, it's not fair to somehow turn it around on you just because you were in the area.

You Can't Make Last-Minute Plans

You are a busy girl, and while you do make time to hang out with the BF, that doesn't mean you can drop your plans at any second to go hang out. When he suggests hanging out at the last minute but you have another obligation, he shouldn't be putting blame on you for ignoring him or prioritizing things over him. It's nice he wants to spend time together, but that's totally unfair to blame you for being selfish for simply having your own schedule.

He's Broke

It's 2013, and guys definitely don't need to pay all the time on dates - in fact, splitting bills is great to keep couple peace. The annoying thing is if he offers to pay, and then later starts complaining about how you cleaned him out. Ummm, you definitely didn't make him pay! That's just not cool to put forth a favor and then use it against someone.

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez have had a rocky relationship for a while. They broke up about a month ago, and Justin was hanging out with Victoria’s Secret models–not good. He had to work extra hard to win her back, and it looks like he blew it again. Another guy came between Selena and Justin: Nick Jonas. But not in the way you might expect.

It wasn’t Selena Gomez hanging out with the Jonas Brother. Rather, Justin hung out with Selena’s ex, Nick, in the recording studio and apparently beat the snot out of him in a ping pong match. The guys then tweeted about it (ouch!). This all set Selena off. “Justin and Nick Jonas hung out all night,” a source told Hollywood Life. “Selena was crying about it. He wouldn’t even return her calls when she found out and called him up. Hanging out with Nick proved that he wants to just be a jerk about this, and Selena’s sick of being heartbroken. They are finished, and I think it’s for good this time.”

Now, this is kind of a toughie. You can’t control who your boyfriend is friends with, but we can totally understand why Selena wouldn’t necessarily want Justin bonding with her ex–that’s uncomfortable and awkward: What if they’re talking about her? It’s just a weird situation all around.

How should you deal with your guy being friends with your ex? That depends on a few things.

First, were they friends before you started dating? Then you have less leeway, because it’s something you knew going in. You can try to set boundaries: “Hey, can you just not bring my name up? Or hang out when I’m around?” and if he’s worth your time, he’ll understand.

If they became pals after you got together, that’s a little weird, but not necessarily bad: If you and your ex are both genuinely over one another, you can just try to keep a safe yet civil distance. If you think there’s going to be drama, though, you may want to lay down the law with your dude. In addition to the guidelines listed before, you may also want to ask him why he’s suddenly BFFs with your old boyfriend just to get a better understanding of the situation: Do they both love ping pong? Are they each the only other guy they know who’s really into Deadpool? It may be innocent enough. Also consider this: Do you live in a small town? It may be a situation of proximity and a lack of other bromance options. Though Justin Bieber and Nick Jonas are pretty popular, in Hollywood, it’s a pretty small circle, and everyone is bound to run into one another at some point.

Obviously, having your boyfriend playing video games with your ex is a little awkward and may be off-putting. But if you’re secure in your relationship (and in yourself) and truly past your former flame, it doesn’t need to be as dramatic as the dilemma Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber got into with Nick Jonas. We think the issues Selena and Justin had before just made what may have not been a huge deal otherwise into a bad situation … and maybe inspired that dance!

Here at Gurl, we’re all for everybody wearing whatever they want, and since we know firsthand how comfy leggings really are, we’re not going to poo-poo any guy who wants to wear them. I mean, they’re easier to move around in than baggier pants, they’re pretty flattering on everybody, and they’re far more attractive than those saggy, baggy jeans that dudes used to wear. Remember seeing every dude’s underwear every day? Yeah, that period in fashion hell scarred us, too.

Who needs Prince Charmingwhen gals are taking care of business themselves?

Despite pretty much being told since we’re old enough to talk that eventually a dude on a white horse (or maybe driving a white Mustang, as it were) would be our hero, sweep us off our feet, and be the Prince Charming to our damsel in distress, a new study says we don’t give a crap about all that. Instead of waiting for Prince Charming to save us, we’re saving ourselves–and being with whatever guy makes us happy, whether or not his armor happens to be super shiny.

Research says that a lot of the guys we end up marrying wind up making less money and getting fewer years of an education than we do–and they call it “marrying down.” We call it “living in the 21st century.” This is happening on a global scale, in part because we’re outnumbering guys in terms of college enrollment–so naturally, chances are that more of us would get degrees than the dudes, right?

While “marrying down” hasn’t caught on as much in the U.S. just yet, it’s pretty much the norm in France, Jordan, Mongolia, Solvenia, South Africa, and Spain.

We’re not sure why such a big deal is being made over this, honestly. Just because a guy doesn’t have a PhD doesn’t mean he’s less awesome than a dude studying up to be a neurosurgeon. There’s nothing wrong with earning more money than a dude you’re into, and if you have a few more abbreviations when you graduate college, it doesn’t mean he’s not worth your time.

It may be a factor of circumstances–not everyone can afford a ton of schooling–or just different goals: Is he an awesome mechanic? Does he dream of being a pro skater? Does he hope his band’s getting signed? Is he going into the family business (whatever that may be)? The fact is, as long as a guy has some sort of a goal and motivation, and if he treats you well and isn’t into bad stuff, go for it if he makes you happy.

You won’t be dating down if you don’t play the passive damsel in distress role and wait around for Prince Charming. You’ll be being practical and proactive–and that usually works better. But you knew that already, because you’re smart!

One of the keys to a successful relationship lies in finding someone who will complement you properly. No, not compliment – although it’s always nice to hear how awesome your eyebrows look – but complement, as in compatible with your personality. Ideally, you want a boyfriend who can both appreciate your best assets and help smooth out some of the rougher edges.

So if you possess some more masculine qualities, you might find that you’re best matched with a more passive guy who can be the yin to your yang. On the other hand, if you’re attracted to athletic, studly men, you might be better suited with a younger, beefier version of Tony Hawk who can keep up with your tomboyish lifestyle. It all depends on what you’re into – but the partners of the best relationships are able to balance and support one another.

While it’s great to be living in an age in which traditional gender roles are increasingly blurring, I do think all heterosexual men like to feel like men sometimes (if not all of the time). So don’t be afraid to let your boyfriend take control. Flirt, and allow him to make some of the moves. Whether he’s a sweet nerd, a tough jock, or somewhere in between, he’ll likely still want to see your feminine side. Feel free to try on a dress or let your hair down once in awhile just to remind him that a tomboy can still be a gurl.

But don’t confuse this with compromising yourself for a guy! Be willing to experiment outside of your comfort zone to see how he might react and how it makes you feel, but never continue to do anything that feels like forced acting. In the end, the only way you’ll find true happiness in love is with someone who can love you for who you truly are!
