But anyway. While I was watching Freaks and Geeks, I started thinking about Lindsay and Nick as a sort-of couple and I sort of started wishing I could be included in the little thing they had going on, or that at least I could replace Lindsay. Then I started thinking about other ’90s fictional couples I wouldn’t have minded being a part of. And so… here are my 10 favorite ’90s TV couples, from the obvious to the maybe not as obvious. Admit it – you’d totally switch places with some of these people for a few days.

DJ & Steve from Full House

Yes, these two end up breaking up, but I think they sort of get back together… right? Not only did I used to be totally jealous of D.J. and Steve’s relationship, but I was basically just jealous of D.J. in general and wanted whatever she had. This totally relatable relationship is the kind of first love a lot of us have always wanted.

Sabrina and Harvey from Sabrina The Teenage Witch

Sabrina and Harvey have such a dramatic ending – they break up, find other people, almost get married (Sabrina)… and then magically reunite! It’s so romantic and wonderful, although kind of mean if you think about it. But still – exciting!

Zack and Kelly from Saved By The Bell

Not going to lie, this is kind of a complicated love story that I have trouble following because my dad didn’t like when I watched Saved By The Bell, so I pretty much had to watch it in secret. But regardless of the fact that I didn’t know this couple super well, I always wanted to be a part of it. Zack and Kelly are adorable together.

Lindsay and Nick from Freaks and Geeks

Okay, honestly, Nick was way too nice for Lindsay. Lindsay was like this wanna-be wild child, and Nick was sort of wild but was really a nice guy at heart. And to me, Linds always seemed so stuck on Daniel. It was like, Lindsay, get your head together! I mean, I would have been more than willing to take her place.

Ross and Rachel from Friends

I mean, obviously. Guys – Ross and Rachel are iconic to me. I know they had a ton of ups and downs, but when they were together, they were perfect! They were meant to end up together. He said her name during his wedding to that horrible English girl. Come on!

Buffy and Angel from Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Speaking of iconic, here’s Buffy and Angel. I like to think of them as the ’90s version of Edward and Bella, but so much better. This was forbidden love at it’s best, ladies.

Angela and Jordan from My So-Called Life

I guess we don’t really know exactly what happened between Angela and Jordan, but I like to imagine they lived happily ever after in cute couple bliss. This was a seriously relatable high school couple and I loved every second of it.

Brenda and Dylan from 90210

Although we never officially saw this on-again/off-again couple get together for realz, we pretty much know they ended up together and are possibly living together in London in some TV reality land. How awesome, right?

Rebecca and Uncle Jesse from Full House

They may be a little older than any other couple on this list, but that doesn’t mean they don’t belong here. There’s only one woman I’d allow to steal Uncle Jesse, and that’s Rebecca.

Cory and Topanga from Boy Meets World

Do these two even need an explanation? Cory and Topanga are basically the ultimate ’90s couple – important enough to get their own spin-off years later. Their love might be hard to believe, since they were teenagers, but whatever. Still perfect.

We already told you guys about the totally awesome, amazing, fantastic, wonderful news that a Boy Meets World spin-off is happening, and (just in case you couldn’t tell), I’m still super excited about it. I watch reruns of Boy Meets World on the regular and I still mourn the day it was taken off the air.

But when I first heard about this spin-off series, Girl Meets World, I was a little dubious. The second it was announced that it was in the works, everyone was like “OMG my childhood” but I was like, “What if the show doesn’t include any of the original actors?” and I was sort of bummed about that possibility – until now. Because – drumroll, please – Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel have officially signed on to reprise their roles as Cory and Topanga. Does this make this spin-off that much better? Oh, yes. Does it mean that I will obviously be tuning in? Definitely.

After I did my little happy dance at the thought of seeing two of my favorite television actors reunite on screen as, hopefully, a more mature couple than they were in high school, I thought about something. Because, hold on, where is Rider Strong? You know, the adorable actor who played the equally adorable and charming Shawn Hunter? Not to sound weird, but Shawn was my favorite part of Boy Meets World. Yeah, Cory was awkwardly cute, but he sort of annoyed me sometimes. Sure, Topanga was my girl crush before I knew what a girl crush was, but I couldn’t daydream about her as my boyfriend, you know? And, yeah, Mr. Feeny was totally my voice of wisdom throughout life, but, well… he’s no Shawn Hunter.

I mean, I’m still going to watch Girl Meets World, but it would easily be one million times better if Rider Strong joined the new cast. In case you guys were wondering, he is even hotter than his teenage self. Oh, and something that makes him even sexier? He graduated from Columbia University as an English major. He’s just basically my dream man. No big deal.

Since BMW, Rider has had a few small parts in TV shows and movies (like Cabin Fever), but right now I feel like his schedule could be relatively open and he should use his time wisely by reprising his role as Shawn Hunter. Then he should convince William Daniels (Mr. Feeny) and Will Friedle (Eric!) to come along with him. And then Girl Meets World would be perfect. Like a show that was created from my happiest of dreams.

How cool is that? Not will some of our favorite characters be back, but this time, the whole plot will revolve around a girl!

Maybe it’s because when I was a kid, these shows actually kind of scared me a little, and now they don’t (usually). Or maybe it’s because they’re just all around awesome. What I wouldn’t give for some new episodes of Boy Meets World. It was such a perfect, silly show. Look at Cory thinking he’s a werewolf. It’s too freakin’ cute.

Lizzie McGuire

I’m really happy for Hilary Duff with her new baby and husband and everything, but can we please go back in time and have her be Lizzie McGuire again? I’m loving her adorable clown costume here.

Bewitched

This is seriously old school – but what doesn’t scream Halloween like a show about a witch does? Bewitched is a classic… you can’t go wrong! I’m obsessed with all of these old costumes, too.

Rugrats

Who hasn’t had a pretend camping trip in their bedroom complete with a fire? And also, who hasn’t known a kid who calls lightening “frightening”? I mean, it’s pretty much the perfect word.

Friends

Why Chandler agreed to wear a pink bunny costume I will never understand… but this clip is such a great example of why this show is amazing.

My So-Called Life

I love young Claire Danes. She’s so cool and chill and I want to be her best friend. Just one question about this episode: has anyone else ever shaved their legs in the school bathroom? Didn’t think so.

Hey Arnold

I love how the guys in Hey Arnold are just hanging out, eating snacks and telling ghost stories (obviously, Arnold’s is the best). It’s totally something we’ve all done with our friends.

Berenstain Bears

This brings back some serious childhood memories right now. I mean, okay, this isn’t scary at all, but it’s still worth a watch. And if you never read Berenstain Bears… I’m sorry.

Sabrina The Teenage Witch

Even though every episode of Sabrina was kind of like Halloween, this Halloween one is particularly spooky. I wish I was a witch. Life would be so much cooler.

Family Matters

Steve’s puppet is literally the creepiest part of this episode – because puppets are scary, okay? Also, I want to carve my pumpkin just like the one in the beginning of this video.

Blossom

Watch the very beginning of this – here lies the reason why most dudes get their butts out of bed, put on a costume and celebrate Halloween. Maybe that’s not fair. But it’s kind of true.

Doug

This might not be the best quality, but who cares? It’s Doug! We all like to catch up on some old-school Doug, am I right?

The Cosby Show

I know I can’t be the only ones who miss the Cosby family in this show. Also, I need Rudy’s pumpkin costume for myself. How cute is it?!

Fat Albert 

This is another seriously old-school show, but that’s exactly what makes it totally worth watching. I feel like sometimes the oldest Halloween things are the best Halloween things.

Even Stevens

Who else misses this adorable, goofy Shia LaBeouf? I mean, look at him now. Look at him. It’s tragic.

It’s not weird for your best guy friend to come sneaking into your second-story room whenever he wants without any notice at all. It’s cute. It just shows how close you guys are. Really. But actually, please don’t do this. You’ll probably get arrested.

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air: If you mess up and get in some fights, you can live like a millionaire.

Okay, so you’ve been messing up in school and starting fights. No biggie, you can always pack up and start a brand new life, one that involves a sarcastic butler and lots of money. Because I mean, don’t we all have super rich uncles who live in super posh areas who are willing to let you live with them even if you’re a total screw-up? No? Are you sure?

Family Matters: It’s okay to bully a kid as long as he’s super weird.

Usually, bullying is wrong, but Family Matters proves that it’s not always wrong. It’s okay if the kid you’re being mean to is super strange and different and weird. I mean, was it just me, or was this whole family really, insanely mean to Steve Urkel?

Full House: Basements are for bachelors. Attics are for family men. Moving out is for losers.

When you’re ready to move out, you don’t actually have to move out. You can live in the basement while you’re single, and then once you’re ready to start a family, you can just move up into the attic – with all of them. Seriously, attics are totally big enough for an entire family to live in. And living with your whole extended family is never going to get annoying. Just take it from Uncle Jesse.

Boy Meets World: Crimped hair is a great way to meet your soulmate.

I love Topanga, but let’s be real: her hair was crazy. ’90s acceptable crazy, but still crazy. But good news: crazy, crimped, big hair can still help you find your soulmate in life. Just look at Cory and Topanga – what more proof do you need?

Sabrina the Teenage Witch: You shouldn’t always listen to your cat.

You might think that your talking cat is giving you good advice, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes your cat can just get you in lots of trouble and convince you to do magic you probably shouldn’t even be doing. So stop listening to your cat, okay?

Kenan & Kel: Orange soda solves all problems.

Orange soda is delicious and amazing and one of the best drinks ever. Kel knows this more than anyone in the world. And drinking it will help fix all of your problems, because it will always make you smile. So next time you’re feeling sad – just buy yourself some orange soda. Boom. Problem solved.

Home Improvement: Don’t know what to do? Ask a creepy guy with no face, obvs!

If you need advice, go to your neighbor. It doesn’t matter that he doesn’t seem to have a face. That’s not weird or creepy at all. Just keep going into your backyard and bothering him by talking to him through the fence. It’s no big deal that you guys never see each other.

Are You Afraid of the Dark?: All scary stories have happy endings.

Don’t be afraid of scary stories – They’re like Disney movies with flashlights! According to this show, it doesn’t matter how many bad things happen, or how many supernatural creatures appear… there will always be a happy ending. Okay, maybe that’s actually kind of a good lesson. Although it does make scary stories much less scary.

Friends: Dating your friends always works out and never destroys a friend group.

You can have a group of 6 friends and almost all of you can date at some point, but you’ll all still remain best buddies with no weirdness at all! Seriously, dating each other is never going to make you completely resent each other. Or at least according to Friends.

Back when I was a kid and watched Boy Meets World as much as possible, I was over-the-top obsessed with Shawn Hunter. Cory might have been the adorably nerdy, perfect boyfriend, but Shawn was the ‘bad boy’ of the show. And there’s no denying he was totally sexy. Even that bowl-cut hair looked good on him. Damn!

Randall Thomas from Home Improvement

Someone please tell me what happened to Jonathan Taylor Thomas? He kind of just disappeared off the face of the Earth. For the first few years of Home Improvement, Randall was just another insanely cute child actor – and then he transformed into a gorgeous teen. I know I’m not the only one who had posters of him above my bed. And in my locker. And pasted on my binders. And hidden under my pillow. I’m not the only one, right?

Angela Chase from My So-Called Life

One of the great mysteries of the ’90s is why this show was only given one season. Angela Chase had the whole smart-girl thing down perfectly, and her red hair? Way too cute. But I really had a total girl crush because every time she said something, it was like she was reading my mind. Move over Rayanne! I want that seat next to Angela.

Zack Morris from Saved By The Bell

Blonde hair, blue eyes, cute smile – Zack Morris was the epitome of California surfer-boy cool. And he was funny! Every time he talked directly to the camera, I would imagine he was talking directly to me…over a romantic candle lit dinner with Michael Bolton playing in the background. Um, I mean… never mind.

Sam Anders from Clarissa Explains It All

Thanks to Sam, I spent the majority of my teen years hoping and praying that one night, my crush would find a very tall ladder and climb into my room to surprise me. Obviously, it never happened. Which is probably for the best. I mean, my family had an alarm system. Police interaction is never as romantic as Hollywood makes it seems. Trust me.

Buffy Summers from Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Before Sookie Stackhouse, there was Buffy Summers. And as much as I love True Blood (which is so much), Sookie just can’t really compare to Buffy. There haven’t been many TV characters who kick butt as much as Buffy did. She was a total bad-ass, killing vampires and still managing to look hot. I could never decide if I wanted to be her or just girl crushed her super hard.

Joey Russo from Blossom

Whenever I saw Joey Russo on my TV screen, only one word came to mind: “Whoa!” He might have been a little bit of a player, but that didn’t take away from the fact that he was still really loveable. I mean, listen to him talk to his dad about condoms. How can you not smile? And then want to tongue kiss him?

Daria from Daria

Okay, okay, Daria isn’t technically a real person – but who says you can’t have an innocent crush on a cartoon character? Daria’s dry humor and sarcasm was so different from so many other female characters on TV, and it was really cool. Total crush material in my ’90s handbook!

Brandon Walsh from Beverly Hills, 90210

Let’s be real, everyone on this show was beyond beautiful, but there was something extra special about Brandon. That hair. Those eyes. Sigh. The fact that he was into journalism and was a smart guy just made him even sexier. Even as a teenager, I knew Brandon was marriage material. And I practiced saying “I do” to him in the mirror every single day of 1994.

Will Smith from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air

Despite all of Will’s ridiculously goofy and colorful outfits, and all of his crazy antics, he was still completely lovable. Between his dancing, his jokes, his big smile and his corny pick-up lines, Will was just overall crush-worthy. And a third wheel date with Jazz? So fun!

Ugh, how I wish Boy Meets World was still on the air. It was only one of the best shows of all time, and let’s be serious – Mr. Feeny was one of the best TV characters of all time.

I totally had a crush on Joey Blossom when this TV show was on (as did most of you, I’m sure). The way he said ‘Whoa’? Totally adorable.

“Doh”: Homer from The Simpsons

The Simpsons has been around so long we’re sure there are tons of things that have been said that are super popular… but ‘doh’ might be the very best.

“Who loves orange soda?”: Kel from Kenan & Kel

“Who loves orange soda? Kel loves orange soda! I do, I do, I do-o-oo-o!” You definitely say this every time you drink orange soda, don’t lie.

“You got it, dude!”: Michelle from Full House

Look how cute little Mary-Kate and Ashley were in Full House. This is one of the best phrases ever, hands down.

She also grew up with us. Who knew when the show started that Danielle Fishel, the actress who played Topanga, would grow into such a gorgeous (and curvy!) young woman–but it wasn’t Topanga’s way to use her body to get what she wanted–and that set the tone for so many of us watching the show. My favorite quote from her basically says it all, “I’m a damsel, but not the distressed kind, one who’s totally calm and in complete control of her own destiny.”

Half of what must be the longest-lasting teenage relationship ever featured on prime time, Topanga and Cory (the Boy part of …Meets World) were friends above all else, and when she proposed to him during their high school graduation, it was a sweet reinforcement for everyone who believes in going for what you want, regardless of gender norms.
