A Breast Milk Baby Doll Is A Real Thing – Seriously

Everyone stop what you’re doing and look at this “breast milk baby” doll right now. Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like – a baby doll that you can pretend to breast feed. It even makes sucking and burping noises! No, this isn’t a doll to help new pregnant moms learn how to breast feed before their real baby is born. This is a doll marketed for girls 2-years-old and up. I’m just going to go ahead and say: ICK! Ick, ick, ick!

The doll was created by Berjuan Toys, and was apparently a huge hit over in Europe last year. It comes with a flowered halter top that has basically a fake, flower-shaped nipple on it (imagine if nipples were really shaped like flowers?) that the owner of the doll wears. Once the proud little girl is wearing her fake-nipple halter top, she can put the doll’s mouth to the flower nipple so it can start “drinking” her “breast milk”. Wait, I’m sorry, this is really a thing? Moms are really going to buy this for their very little girls?

Maybe not a ton of moms – a lot of people feel like this doll is too “sexualized” for children. The U.S. rep for Berjuan Toys claims that the baby doll is ”very much less sexualized” than Barbies or Bratz dolls.

Not to sound like a jerk, because I know it’s natural and beautiful and all that, but breast feeling alone kind of freaks me out, so adding the image of a little girl doing it just makes me cringe all over. Come on, world! Do 4-year-old girls really need to practice breast feeding right now? Unless they’re auditioning for a role on Teen Mom, I somehow think they have a few years to go before they need to take on these mommy responsibilities.

Yeah, getting comfortable with the idea of a baby sucking milk out of your boobs can be educational (I guess), but starting girls this young is just a little bit ridiculous, don’t you think? I don’t want to look at a 3-year-old pretending to breast feed a baby because I think it’s creepy, plain and simple. I’m all for educating young girls, but as Bill O’Reilly said, can’t we just let kids be kids sometimes? Can’t we just hand them some cute little baby dolls and let them act like mommies in whatever cute, pretend way they want?

If I had a daughter, this doll would definitely not be going anywhere near her… but maybe that’s just me. Watching a grown woman breast feed her child can be uncomfortable enough (if you’re a little squeamish like me) – watching a little kid do it? No thanks.

Don’t Call Me Baby–Because I’m Not Yours

Honey. Baby. Sweetie. Cutie. What do these four words have in common? They are all NOT my name, but lately I’ve noticed how many times complete strangers have called out to me, talked to me, referred to me, as the aforementioned words. And it’s not just me, either. I’ve heard plenty of people call their waitresses in restaurants and female shop workers “honey,” too. It used to be that dealing with cat calls from a construction site was a rite of passage for a young girl, but these days the passive aggressive sweet nothings are being called out a lot closer to home . . . by the pizza delivery guy, the over-friendly bus driver, a new co-worker, the list goes on and on and it’s pissing me off.

Out of the right mouth, “baby” and “honey” are terms of endearment. One of my best friends always sends me text’s that say “love ya sweetie” and my mom always calls me “honey,” but coming out of the mouth of a relative stranger these words take on a completely different meaning. They’re insults disguised as compliments, a vocabulary wolf in sheep’s clothing. It’s infantilizing–I mean, you might call a five year old “honey,” but to anyone old enough to wear big-girl clothes, it’s degrading.

Naturally, this name calling is a phenomenon that only happens to females. Could you even imagine calling a guy you didn’t know “Babe” in casual conversation? Or referring to the man interviewing you for a job as “Cutie?” Nooooo!!! We would never do that, because it would be unprofessional and seen as insulting. So, why I ask is it okay for the opposite sex? It gives a false sense of intimacy to a total non-relationship. We are not friends, we are not a couple, you probably don’t even know my name, so I’m thinking cutie-honey-sweetie-baby is not an appropriate moniker.

Don’t call me baby (or any of those other names!)–even if you say it with the best of intentions. It’s demeaning and insulting even if you say it with a smile. As they say “You catch more bees with honey,” and this bee prefers to be called by her name!

Henry here, answering questions for you that only a guy can. Between 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom dominating airwaves, and all the gURLs discussing teen pregnancy on the boards, I thought today’s topic was quite fitting. Ana asks:

Dear Henry,

Does it really matter to a guy if a girl has a baby? I’m 16 and I have a six month old daughter and I have had a lot of trouble finding a guy that’ll be okay with me being a mother. How can I know whether or not a guy is down with dating a girl with a baby?

Well, Ana, I think in your case it has a lot to do with your age. Most teen guys are all about experimenting. They want to date, kiss, dry-hump, and have sex with as many girls as possible. It’s brutal, I know, and probably the last thing you want to hear, but teen guys see a baby as getting in their way because it cuts into their new-and-improved, post puberty life.

Think about it: For a really young guy who feels like he’s just hit his sexual prime, the thought of a baby becomes a major turn off. Most guys have it in the back of their head that they’ll eventually find a chick, settle down, and maybe even become a father, but in terms of timing, it looks way far down the road.

My advice to you is, for the time being, concentrate on taking care of your baby and being able to support both yourself and your child. You’ll find that as the guys around you get older, it’ll be easier to date. That’s because as guys get older, they become less sex crazed and a little more relationship-oriented, so lots of them will start to overlook that you have a kid. But in the meantime, don’t be surprised if a guy sees it as just another layer of responsibility that he doesn’t really want in a relationship.

And hey, it’s not to say that all young guys will steer clear of you because you’ve had a baby. You’re just going to need to find a special one who is willing to take on that extra responsibility. Silver lining: at least when you find him, you’ll know he’s really got your back and loves you for you.
