Apparently our good relationship doesn’t seem to translate to everyone as siblings in public, and we’re left saying “We’re not a couple!” far too often.

Sibling chemistry is a real thing. It’s not flirtation, but siblings have a repertoire, inside jokes and certain mannerisms toward each other that other people might pick up as something else.

Well, this happens to my brother and I. A lot. Like every time we go out in public.

But we look like we could be twins! So how people even make the mistake is just beyond me. People always say off the cuff things like “Aw you guys are such a cute couple” or “How long have you been dating?”

The worst though was one time in high school. Our mom was really busy and sent us to the grocery store. Knowing we were on our own with mom’s credit card meant we could get whatever we wanted! Naturally, we stuffed the cart with everything in sight.

When we got to the checkout line, the cashier started making small talk. She commented on how we had a lot of stuff and politely says, “Oh are y’all having an engagement party?”

I blankly stared at her for a minute and said, “No, um, he’s my brother.” She was clearly embarrassed and probably noticed the resemblance once I said something, but it was super awkward.


Granted, my brother looked like he was 25 when he was 17 so he could have been engaged, but I didn’t look a day over 15. Plus I didn’t have an engagement ring on. And seriously, we look like twins! Like put a wig on my brother and throw fifty pounds on me and we’re essentially the same person.

Like I said, I’m fortunate to have such a good relationship with my brother, but come on world! I’d like to go out to dinner with my big bro without everyone assuming we’re on a date.

Full disclosure: I can be pretty awkward sometimes. Like, worse than the TV show. Most of the times I can mask it, but there’s one area where I usually can’t get around it, and that’s on a date.

Combine my awkwardness with an equally awkward dude, and you pretty much have a perfect storm for a disaster date.

I had known this guy Louis (changing his name to protect the awkward) for a while–we’d see one another around at parties and shows with mutual friends. I always thought he was cute and hilarious, but he also has a dry sense of humor (I do too!), so whenever I’d talk to him we’d just make fun of each other and go about our business. He never asked for number or anything, so I just assumed he actually hated my guts. It turned out, though, that we basically were acting like little kids with crushes in a sandbox: “Oh, you’re hot. Let me throw rocks at you!”

After about two months of back and forth name calling, eye rolling and insults, he finally asked me to come hang out at a comedy show he was on. I went, and we didn’t hug hello or anything–and there were lots of people around. The most physical interaction we had was limited to high five, and I might have play punched his arm or something. As a result, no one around–myself included–was sure what was up.

As a result of that, while Louis was onstage, two other guys starting hitting on me separately and tried to pick me up. (This probably wouldn’t have happened twice if it were remotely clear that Louis was interested or vice versa.) This continued after he was offstage, but he didn’t seem to know what was happening until I texted him “HELP,” at which point he came over and was like, “Can I talk to you for a second? Like, all the way over there?”

At the end of the night, which was pretty consistently awkward, Louis walked me to my car, and I offered to drop him off back in front of the comedy club where he’d been performing since his friends were still there. I turned on my hazard lights and was blocking traffic and had my seatbelt on. Figuring that maybe we hadn’t been on a date after all, I went to hug him goodbye . . . and he tried to kiss me.

Almost as a reflex, I sort of involuntarily moved my head. He missed.

I hadn’t intended to diss him at all, I’d just assumed he wasn’t interested, so I wasn’t mentally prepared for what had just gone down. I was sort of mortified by the whole thing, but he just laughed, “That was awkward,” said goodnight and peaced out.

After facepalming my whole way home, I texted him apologizing: “Sorry for being awkward. If I knew that was coming, I wouldn’t have put my seatbelt on so fast.”

We’re going out again. It’s probably still going to be awkward, but at least we’re both a lot more aware of what we’re in for this time around.

Ouch. This was… bad. Not because it’s two girls kissing each other, but because a) Vanessa looks so incredibly uncomfortable as Olivia is coming towards her and b) Dan and Vanessa are just extremely awkward in general. This threesome was not something anyone believed would ever happen.

I’m sure this first kiss was very satisfying for fans of The Vampire Diaries, but for me? Not so much. I mean, look at Damon. He’s sweating because he’s sick and has a fever! Not because he’s hot for Elena. He looks like he’s seconds away from being unconscious. It’s just… weird.

Another kiss that was painful to watch, but even more painful because IT WAS REAL. It just looked like this girl was trying so hard… her dress even ripped! Ouch. Awkward. I literally screamed at my TV while this was happening because it was so horrible to watch. Deena, Pauly, I love you, but please don’t ever kiss on camera again, ever. That lip bite? Ouch. The look on Ronny’s face says it all.

Let’s be real: losing your virginity isn’t always as perfect and sweet as some movies and TV shows make it out to be. Sometimes it’s just super weird and awkward. The OC showed this so perfectly when Seth and Summer had sex for the first time. Everything started out cute and fun, and then, BAM, fish sex. It happens to the best of us, guys. And I’m kind of happy it happened to these two, because hearing Seth tell Ryan about it? Even more awkward and hysterical.

That time Dan’s heart got eaten by a dog – One Tree Hill

Honestly, this might be the funniest/most awkward scene of television history. I mean, a dog snatching a human heart moments before the operation? It just doesn’t get much better than that. Everything about this scene is ridiculous (in the best way). First of all, why is there a dog in the hospital? Second of all, why does everyone stop and stare but no one tries to grab the dog? This is awkward perfection.

When Jimmy got shot – Degrassi

I am not in any way making light of school shootings, but we all have to admit that this super dramatic Degrassi scene was just a little bit ridiculous, not to mention really cringe-worthy. This kid was supposed to be Jimmy’s friend, and then all of the sudden he’s shooting him and paralyzing him? It doesn’t get much more uncomfortable than that.

When Aria tells her parents about her relationship with Ezra - Pretty Little Liars

I have no idea why these two thought it would be a good idea to come clean to her parents about their totally illegal/creepy/still-somehow-cute relationship, but they did, and so this happened. It was so uncomfortable to watch that I kind of wanted to turn my TV off. From Aria’s little brother punching Ezra in the face to her parent’s completely understandable shock and disgust, this had to be one of the most awkward scenes in PLL history.

When everyone finds out Blair still loves Chuck – in the middle of her wedding – Gossip Girl

Oh, Blair. How did you not see this coming? Even though I was totally rooting against the marriage of Blair and Prince Louis, this was still a little hard to watch. I mean, she was up there smiling and getting married in front of hundreds of people, and then everyone gets a text message with proof that she loves someone else. Like, video proof. I felt awkward just looking at her face and it wasn’t even real.

Speaking of awkward, MTV’s Awkward features maybe the most awkward moments of all and that’s exactly why I can’t get enough of it. I wouldn’t trade those totally uncomfortable scenes for anything. The season premiere is on tonight at 10:30/9:30c on MTV.

My other bestie told me that when it came to blow jobs, you should fill your mouth with as much water as possible before heading south of the border.

“But . . . wouldn’t you, like, spit water all over them?” I asked. Even though I’d only kissed boys before, this seemed really, really wrong.

My mistake, of course, was assuming that hooking up with him wouldn’t be awkward. Since we couldn’t exactly get it on with parents in the house, we took refuge in his mom’s Mercedes SUV (omg so small and uncomfortable) and I got down to business. He had given me some pre-action tips like, “pull your lips over your teeth so you don’t scratch Mr. Wiggly” and “keep it as wet as possible.” Well, I tried.

I remember being shocked at how it tasted—normal. Like your finger. I don’t know why but I always assumed a penis would be flavored. Once I got passed that great shock, I realized that the word “job” is in the title of this activity for a reason. It’s a lot of work! Coordinating your hand with your mouth with your teeth with your other hand, all while wedged inside a compact luxury SUV. Thankfully, as a 17-year-old boy he didn’t take long to finish–but that’s where things went wrong.

I don’t know what I was expecting, but there was a lot more, you know, than my mouth was prepared to hold. I panicked, I didn’t know whether I should spit or swallow and then the most horrible thing ever happened: I coughed. And “it” went EVERYWHERE, spewing into the air and all over Zack’s mom’s leather upholstery. He burst out laughing but I wanted to crawl into the glove compartment and die.

And that’s the story of my first time going down on a guy–and how I got the nickname “Fountain.”

So if you’re worried about your first time being perfect, just know from a girl who has been there that well, it probably won’t be. But that’s okay–you’re normal, and anyone you hook up with (when you decide to!) is lucky–even if it is a little awkward!

We were in high school and I’d only been dating him for a couple weeks. We’d just had our first kiss, and he called me that night to tell me how awesome it was. I was psyched and couldn’t stop thinking about kissing him again–that is, until he asked the most inappropriate question ever:

Woah-woah-woah! I quickly said, “Uh, NO?” and I could tell he was super embarrassed.
