I purchased these sneakers one
summer about three years ago at the Cobblers Shop on 8th street
(R.I.P.) in New York City. It was a rainy day and the Converse
sneakers I was wearing were soaked through, and literally falling
apart. I chose these blue and yellow Pumas because they reminded
me of sneakers kids would wear to break dance in the '80s.
I have had many crazy adventures
with these sneakers, but one of the best times was when my best
friend Rachel and I stayed up all night making stencils of Japanese
animation characters and spray painting the all over Staten
Island.
I had never written graffiti
before so I was a little nervous, especially because we had three
cans of spray paint and four different kinds of caps (which are
now illegal in New York City); we could very easily have been
arrested and thrown in jail.
Rachel and I arrived back at
her house at 6 a.m., covered in spray paint, to find her mom waiting
for us on the couch. I almost wished we were in jail. After a
brief lecture and a few threats we promised never to write graffiti
again--and we haven't.
