 
I suppose that in the world of fashion, there is a humongous difference between the body of, say, Cindy Crawford, and one of those Kate Mossy girls. In the real world of women, the difference is about as big as a teeny tiny sliver of chocolate cake,
and a girl who doesn't slip seamlessly into that super-narrow space might consider her body less than "ideal."
The thing is, although the skinny look has been naggingly persistent for our entire lifetimes, other generations were subjected to beauty ideals which were entirely different.
These standards of beauty were probably no easier to deal with for the women who didn't measure up (or down) to them. It's interesting to look back and see how things changed, even if the basic problem stays the same.
