telemarketer
The summer after my high school graduation, I really just wanted a job that would pay well. So when my friend told me that her dad's company was looking for telemarketers and paying $12.50 an hour, we both jumped at the opportunity.
My job was to "courtesy call" people who had ordered skincare products in the past, to see if they were happy with the products and if they wanted to order more. For what ended up being a $6-an-hour job, I talked to people complaining of worse skin than what they started off with, people who had never received their money back after returning bad products and people who had paid for products that they never received.
In addition to the verbal abuse I suffered for minimum wage, my friend and I were also told by our overseer that we could no longer wear shorts to the office, despite the 90-degree heat. After all, there were men in the office, and we didn't want any problems, now did we?
My advice to all gURLs: Do not become telemarketers unless you are certain you'll make more than $15 an hour and you know the company you're going to work for very well.
