On Halloween, when all the "normal people" are buying the freaky stuff I usually wear, I go conceptual. I've been characters from books no one's ever read, songs no one's ever heard and movies no one's ever seen. I've been biblical figures, little-known goddesses and physical embodiments of specific states of mind. In junior high school, I went as a tree sylph, something no one can even pronounce, much less recognize. And though I definitely get a little tired of explaining myself, I never run into anyone wearing the same costume.
