#9
This tour was followed by another, and then more, always set up in those early years by my traveling companions. Later, after I'd learned the ropes and started making more personal connections with people who put on shows, I set up tours myself as well.
Lesson number nine: Setting up tours is really a matter of building a network. If you are a solo act, all you need are a car, a map, an e-mail account and a few months to plan. You can start within a very small radius and before you know it, you will have a great outward reaching spiral of folks who make and/or love music and love to put on shows in their town. Make friends through music with people who are in bands and go on tour with them, even if just for a weekend. Try to play shows with bands that are slightly more well known than you.
