What's the best part of flying?
Every flight brings a new experience and challenge. I can't sit around and do the same thing over and over, so for me the best part of flying is the fact that I can go to work, challenge myself with something new every flight and land in a location that I have never seen before.
The academic part of pilot training was by far the hardest thing I have ever done. I have never been into mechanical systems or memorization, so it was a shock when I came to pilot training and was told, "Know everything there is about this new plane, and--by the way--become an expert in six months."
Do you have any fears related to doing your job?
Of course. I just have to reassure myself that I was given the best training in the world, and will be able to handle an emergency if it comes.
What types of things do you have to deal with that a man in the air force might not have to face?
Just the lack of women in general makes the armed forces a totally different experience for women; but the biggest challenge I can think of is becoming pregnant and raising children in the military. A deployment would be a huge burden on a new mother, but the Air Force has certain rules they follow to accommodate such matters.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to join the armed forces?
Anyone can do it, there are just a lot of hoops to jump through, so don't get discouraged. Educate yourself on the many options that can lead you into a flying career. It is a long process--and at times can be difficult--but just remember it's all worth it. I have the greatest job in the world, and wouldn't change anything about it!
