So what exactly do you do? Describe your process.
I am the hair and make up artist for fredflare.com. Working here is the TOPS! My process begins with meeting the model at his/her interview. The photographer usually lets me know what we are featuring in the shoot so I can plan on what make-up colors to use and how to style hair. We recently shot for our new catalog in Las Vegas.
How did you decide to get involved with styling?
I applied for beauty school in the 10th grade (which I only suggest doing if you are super ambitious like I was). I knew this was the career for me! I loved hair and make-up. I always had haircutting parties with my classmates, friends and family (which I still do to this day). I practiced a lot on my mother who sometimes had haircuts she didn't want.
What kind of training did you receive?
I had extensive training for two years. It usually takes less than a year to go through beauty school but I would go to high school first, and then leave in the afternoon to go to beauty school. I usually took these classes 'til 5pm. I would also have to attend on Saturdays.
What's the most interesting part of your job?
Meeting a lot of fabulous people is probably the most interesting and best part of my job! I have made some great friends working at fredflare.com, as well as other jobs I have done on location. It is always great to meet other creative people and be able to come together and make something amazing.
Trying to convince people they want the wrong look for themselves is very difficult. I try to make all my clients happy but at the same time, I have to select a style that will fit their face and features. I haven't run into anything that rough, but with this job you have to be up for anything. You have to expect crazy and fun things to happen.
