How autobiographical is your movie, "Mean Girls"?
Well, there are little bits of me spread all over the place, like conversations that I remember and people that I kind of knew in high school.
Is the character Regina based on anybody?
She's not. She is actually the most amalgamated character. It's funny because one of Regina's big moves in the movie is actually based on my mom. My mom has this mean habit. If she sees a lady in a really ugly hat or a glittery sweatshirt, she'll go out of her way to be like, "I love your sweatshirt." I'll be like, "Mom, that's really mean." She always says, "Why, clearly she wore it because she wanted someone to acknowledge the sweatshirt, she picked it out with a huge teddy bear on it."
What was up with all the fighting and bodily harm in the film?
When I was writing the movie, those girls in Oak Park, Illinois were hazing and fighting each another. I realized that everything in the real world is getting to a nasty physical level. So I tried to show that in the movie.
Are high school kids this mean?
Girls are! Yeah, absolutely.
What is the meanest thing a girl ever did to you growing up?
I've definitely had girls threaten to kick my butt. And the part in the movie when one girl says to the other, "Oh. You're really pretty." Then when the other says, "Oh thank you!" The mean girl says, "So you agree?" That basically happened to me. Other than that, just the usual nonsense.
