How do you use that experience as an actress? Especially now when you're trying to build back-stories and characters, do you use some of that experience?
People often ask me how I research things, and very rarely is it literal. It's much more by osmosis ... I think it was just a very important mind-opening experience I had in my life that, of course affects, my work, my art and how I want to express myself.
I mean, I was 16 [when I was at the Vermont school] and at 16, things really do impress themselves upon you.
Who would you say are your role models?
Yes, but as a person, too.
I think Julie (Julianne Moore) is definitely a role model of mine. Especially seeing her as a mother, as well as an actress, and how well she seems to juggle those things.
And as an actress, there are a few actresses who are just really inspiring to me. I really like Holly Hunter, Laura Dern and Meryl Streep. I think those are all people who sometimes make wild, huge, inspired choices and commit to them.
