little."
Gertrude Stein was fascinated by repetition.
She believed that if you listen closely enough to what other people repeat,
you can figure out their 'bottom nature' and who they really are.
"I began to get enormously interested in hearing how everybody said the
same thing over and over again with infinite variations but over and over
again until finally if you listened with great intensity you could hear it
rise and fall and tell all that was inside them."
The most famous line she ever wrote is this study in simple repetition:
When she heard that people were repeating her "little sentences" to make
fun of them, she was pleased.
She said,
"My little sentences have gotten under
their skins"
She knew that if you repeat something enough, you grow to love it.
