Sophie Germain, a self-taught mathematical genius, snuck in a research paper to a professor at a men-only academy in France under the name M. LeBlanc. The professor introduced her to the great mathematicians and scientists of the day, and she went on to publish papers under her pseudonym that helped develop the modern theory of elasticity and the discovery of the planet Neptune.
