After escaping a bad marriage, Aurore Dudevant took the name George Sand and slammed men and society in a series of scandalous novels (the French senate even banned them from public libraries). Her lifestyle was shocking too (she smoked and wore men's clothing), but helped generate enough of a press frenzy that she was able to support herself and her children just fine.
