George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans and later Marian Cross) wrote long books. Really, really long books, such as "Silas Marner," "Middlemarch" and "The Mill On The Floss." Before she started writing, Eliot was also an established literary critic and somewhat famous adulterer who lived "in sin" with a married man for over 20 years. She made the switch to George Eliot in order to get out from under the burden of both these titles, and to find a wider audience for her work.
