Hanna Hoch was a remarkably original artist. She was among the first to incorporate magazine collage and photomontage into her work, which often included personal photographs and scraps as well as more public images that, when combined, reflected her own interpretation of the times.
While she lived in Germany, she satirized the treatment of women as well as the political atmosphere of the pre-WWI era. What I find so incredible about Hanna Hoch is the sense of humor she maintained in her work even as she turned her eye to fascism and sexism.
Many of the motifs she established with her collages paved the way for larger art movements such as Pop Art and for advertising as we know it. --mia
