poetry about being yourself

being yourself: easy

i remember
looking out over the city
so endless
six years old
from the rooftop playground.
the children played oblivious
a woman stood
colossal
with a scowl
and a whistle on a nylon string
breaking up the fights.
no one noticed
as i stood alone
on a pile of tires
leaning over the edge.
concrete against my stomach
tilting until my feet dangled
inches above the ground
with a tiny smile
because i knew
how easy it would be
to let myself fall.
