poetry about life

life: following the rules of the game

Tiptoeing around each other,
Nothing too bold, cautious,
Headaches, heartaches, and nausea,
Double meanings in every sentence,
Nervous laughing to fill the silence,
Pointless tiptoe courtship games.

Guts are a bad thing,
They make other tiptoers nervous,
Too bold causes embarassment,
A retreat into excuses,
Reasons, reverse tiptoe,
That's not playing by the rules.

Bold as brass,
Took weeks to get the courage,
Emotional Hell,
Going out on that dangling limb,
Then a shove back to start,
For not playing by the rules.

Tiptoe again,
Social requirements strike once more,
Cautious, nothing too bold,
Double meanings, nervous laughing,
Don't want to try that ever again,
The shove hurts too much.
