poetry about being yourself

being yourself: i don't talk white, i talk how i like

I don't talk "white"
I talk how I like
Not talking like you doesn't make me "white"
Not talking like you just makes me right

It's only to my delight
That I have such friends like Chrissy and Mike

When we were small, just little tikes
We'd play outside 'til it was night
All through the day while the sky was light
We'd ride our bikes
Or fly a kite
Or maybe even take a hike
We'd romp and run 'til the day was slight
Then we'd run inside and say, "good-night"

It's only to my delight
That I have such friends like Chrissy and Mike

We're all tight
We don't fight
Yes, they're white
Try as we might
To do what's right

Do what you like
But respect my height
I'm placing my spike
At an ignorant cite
So that you can read and write
About the girl you thought was "white"

If being "white" means being right
Then, out of spite,
I'd be "white"
Instead of someone you are like
Instead of someone that you like

I don't talk "white"
I talk how I like
Not talking like you doesn't make me "white"
Not talking like you just makes me right
