I've gotten a lot of guff for my name over the years, and have endured every bastardization of it--from funky! to funk to fungus...
And NO, it is not some kind of relic from the funkified '70s. It's actually a pretty common Nigerian (Yoruba) name, and is pronounced "foonk-e" (that's a short e). Nobody could ever say it correctly, so at some point it became "foon-kay" or "fun-kay." These days I'm in a "fun-kay" phase.
My full name is Oyefunmike, which means "God gave me this child to spoil." I'm pretty sure that this has worked on me subconsciously to make me feel entitled to whatever I am given or offered. But then again, maybe I'm just a little paranoid.
