Everyone at my school makes racial jokes, and it makes me feel really awkward. Whenever I speak out against it, people act like I'm this evil uptight jerk, but whenever I don't say anything and try to ignore it, my stomach just turns.
I've gotten in the habit of just finding a way to leave when the conversation turns in that direction, but it's irritating to have to do this all the time. I know I can't stop everyone, but I just don't want people to do it anymore.
Has anyone had similar problems? If so, how did you deal with it?
They're Ignorant
I know it's uncomfortable,
but people are going to be ignorant no matter what. I think you should say something about it because you shouldn't be in a situation where you feel weird or in an enviroment where you feel uncomfortable. --Posted by deh_price_of_fame 10:39PM EST 01/08/08
Racism Is So Out!
You need to tell them exactly how awful you think they're being. Your school counselor may be able to help, depending on how good he/she is. Call them on it though. --Posted by geniusgirl13 06:14PM EST 01/08/08
Call Them Out On It
Don't get really stroppy about it, but I would definitely call them out on it. At my school a lot of people say "that's so gay" and it really bugs me. Whenever anyone does it I just say "Look, I know you don't mean that offensively, but it really bugs me, so do you mind not saying it around me?"
Instead of accusing them of being bad people, alert them to the fact that their comments bug you. By saying you know they don't mean it offensively, you avoid insulting them, and by letting them know it bugs you, you may get them thinking that maybe a lot of people are offended when they say stuff like that. --Posted by actressgurl4eva 08:53AM EST 01/07/08
